NICE Thanks Man Dave are you using the New Mac Pro your using a lot of Plugins on one Vocal that is a lot of processing going on i am on a older Mac Pro i don't think i can get away with using that many plugins ( YOU SHOULD DO A ITL ON YOU COMPUTER AND PROCESSING NEEDED AND STUFF LIKE THAT THAT WOULD BE COOL )
@andrewpulley98
@andrewpulley98 9 жыл бұрын
frank rogers You shouldn't have too much of a problem with that amount of processing on a single vocal if you increase your playback engine buffer to 1024 samples while mixing. Dave also uses UAD plugins, which utilizes an external DSP. Even with that much info, I'd love to see how much external DSP he uses.
@andrewpulley98
@andrewpulley98 9 жыл бұрын
frank rogers I try to run the buffer as high as possible when bouncing online, as this tends to reduce the chance of error during bounce. Offline bounce doesn't care about the buffer setting, because it renders the audio only as fast as your system will allow. In fact, the only time I run a low buffer is during tracking. It's only then that you can hear any latency, because you have a point of reference to work from (the sound of the instrument you are recording vs. the sound coming out of your speakers).

In this scenario here the pre-delay is far too long, the bloom of the reverb builds on top of it, and to my ears really drags behind... I would really pull that initial pre-delay almost to zero, and let the bloom effect yield that smooth intake for good vocal placement... You already have "early reflections" in affect set up with that slap delay presence you chained in earlier for width... OR bring in an ER model in as a secondary effect and pre-elay that on its own, and adjust to taste to the hall reverb bloom swell to achieve your sweet spot, and keeps the vocal sounding "sweet" as you wanted it to appear

My biggest criticism/frustration with digital recording, mixing and mastering is "DEPTH"... No matter how LOUD it gets, compared to old recordings, I just never get the feeling of things being 3-D... they just seem "FLAT" (not pitch). I've been doing lots of driving lately switching between old records from the 70's and new stuff...and the tones of the old records sound better, richer, warmer, glassier and have the front to back sound-stage as well as that 3 dimensional factor that digital recording just doesn't seem to get so well... your thoughts?
@jjjuhg
@jjjuhg 8 жыл бұрын
True. but didn't they have a lot less tracks in a song? now we use too many instruments. to have depth and space we need simplicity, so each instrument will have more of it's own space. you can feel the beauty of the instrument much more. it also has to do with the tube, tape and older gear...even Dave uses 95 % in the box now...
@jjjuhg
@jjjuhg 8 жыл бұрын

creative media Yeah, I mean, I've been making records in the digital domain since the early 90's. But when I began interning in recording studios ("Southern Tracks"/"Studio 1"/"Web 4") in ATL, everything was still analog, and I recorded my first stuff analog. I don't think the problem is a function of tracks, though the more things you add, the smaller everything gets. It definitely has a lot to do with tubes, transistors, real capacitors and nobs to turn verses plug ins. And to make an analogy digital is to analog what video is to film... There's a kind of "chemical" magic with film that add's it's own character or "thing" with the emulsion of chemicals. Likewise, there's nothing like the musicality and warmth of "tape compression"...And I even wonder if a lot of what talking about is in the realm of "psycho acoustics" where digital can't record the "over-tones" and inaudible octaves that analog does. Regardless, I'm getting ready to do a NEW project of my own with very "sparse" production (8 tracks), and I'm using ALL analog recording, all analog outboard and mixing to analog tape as well. I'll probably send the tape master to Disc Makers to make a vinyl record! But I'll do digital files to send to iTunes, Amazon and Google via cdbaby. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, my friend.. God bless and peace be to you!
@jjjuhg
@jjjuhg 8 жыл бұрын
Great. Exactly what you said, I couldn't say better. The idea to use only analog is like a challenge that many of us would live to try. It is interesting to work like that and achieve a desired sound. Only by watching Dave Pensado and Joseph Puig and others talking about making music and I became like... better... I have more drive now :-D nice talking, cheers!
@michaelgraflmusic
@michaelgraflmusic 8 жыл бұрын
I think what you hearing isn't the difference between digital and analog, but rather different production paradigms. All those mo-town records would have a very similar feeling of space if they were tracked on an hdd. But mic placement and signal chains would be a lot different nowadays.

As an artist it's hard to know when you are done polishing your creation. When do you have the right vocal take? When are you done with the production and arrangement? When are you done mixing? When in reality there's ALWAYS room for improvement. Answer: 15:35

LOL! I catch myself trying to click and drag things on the screen while I'm watching these vids. I totally just did it @15:53 so I could see the complete plug and settings. Believe it or not I've never used the C1. I'll have to check it out. I usually use the Rcomp....L2...1176....UAD Tubetechs...have recently looked at the C4. But my recent fave to manhandle unwildly sounds is the DBX160. Kind of a "run of the mill" compressor with not a ton of color that can really put things in line. Sounds like live sound kinda thing. Not real musical but totally has it's place. I've heard people say they can make a distressor sound like anything they want though so that's also on my list to check out. I'm all in the box at this point so its plugs galore. By the way...really dig the Klanghelm Mjuc you recommended. Great plug and it's CHEAP. Love cranking the "drive" knob on that baby...but.....you have to use it with something else to really dial things in. But the sound is there for sure. Anyway..love your vids Dave. The fact that this is 5 years old and I'm still here watching says something.

It’s the third year of me watching this and understanding. Funny how with every passing year’s experience there is a better understanding to absorb for me personally. Now these techniques make more sense in terms of feel as opposed to just the technicalities of it. I am now getting more capable of getting the emotional impact of these reverb/ delay techniques. Thank you for such valuable information. Dave is a legend. Although I am a music producer, you have inspired me enough to look at my production in terms of the mixing result of it. Thank you truly. - Manik Raina ( DOST. )

This video captured my attention intently. IMHO I’ve heard so many songs overuse reverb and delay. Dave knows where and how to set the vocal focus in relation to the song. I’ve repeatedly noticed how he often uses multiple plugins, yet each offering minor adjustments. All this makes me smile with him when he smiles at his own work saying, “That’s pretty good!” 😊
