Thanks for the video. Took me about an hour to get the cotter pin out, needed to use a vise, but other than that, steps clear and easy.

Great video thanks for sharing. My backflow valve was leaking and I purchased the gaskets and magic lube you suggested. The hardest part was getting the pin out but the kit comes with a new pin so I simply replaced it. Works great, no leaks, ready for another 8 years!

Do you need to add DE to the filter after this since you drained it ?

I'm back! Thanks again, the original kit I got had the wrong small gasket (too small) so after all the work, it leaked bigtime out the top. They sent me another kit which I just now installed, easy and it is now leak free. No good deed goes unpunished!

Just wanted to add...you should apply magic lube to the o-ring groove before installing the o-ring and then apply it to the o-ring after its installed on the piston. This way the inside & outside of the o-ring will seal. Or just apply magic lube to the entire o-ring before installing it. It helps reduce friction which can cause flat spots on the o-ring.

Using a dish soap works too. A suggestion from Leslie's pool. I did finally get it out and used Magic Lube on the O rings. Works great. Thanks for responding

the ring holding the whole assembly on was tightened using a vice grip last October when the O rings were changed out by a "professional" and now seems to be frozen there. He also used cooking oil inside and now the valve is also frozen. Ok to use WD40 on either area or just the ring and see if I can get it to come out. Any help is appreciated

I had the same issue. But mine happens every time and I installed it myself and only hand tightened it. Its always been a pain to pull the piston assembly. Probably because I don't do it often enough. The Texas heat can be brutal on o-rings. I used a hair dryer and used a screw driver to pry around the edges for a least 30 minutes before letting loose. Then I started using Silicone Lubricant spray in the Blaster brand and it now takes me less than 5 minutes to remove. Don't use WD-40. And I use Boss brand Silicone Grease on all my o-rings. Silicone lubricants is what should be used on all pool equipment. Try this and you wont have any more trouble removing the slide valve ever again.

Yes, that would point to the small stem Oring. It either is not seated (likely) or missing. Make sure the new stem Oring is seated in the pocket of the upper retaining disc. You will see the Oring seat when you have it disassembled.

That means it has not been used in some time. Make sure the retainer ring is removed. Then gently rock the stem back and forth. Don't overdo it. The stem can snap. If you still can't get it, call a pro, or replace the entire valve unit. Good luck.
