Just get the notes to the C pentatonic C, D, E, G, A, which is a different pattern than the D and G. Once you have that, the approach is the same. Good luck.

Very cool Owen...each instrument has its own little tricks. This is a good one on mandolin.

...hello again, Eddie. i found, and subscribed to, your channel yesterday. Today the KZbin algorithm suggested your pentatonic vid -- and it's another keystone in applying core music theory to the mandolin. So thanks again! To me, one of the best aspects of your lessons is when you pause and, as an aside, apply the teaching to a popular song. Examples being 'My Girl' (the above video) and 'The Weight' (from your tricky chords video). Might i suggest that you do this more? ... and even focus on popular tunes that are not trad bluegrass or mandolin tunes? i realize you've covered blues forms on the mondolin -- but i really think many people would be interested in non-traditional mandolin instruction. And you do seem to have a wide knowledge of musical styles. i think it would help a lot of people -- and also grow your channel, because you deserve more views imho. At any rate, keep it up. i look forward to going through all your vids -- and i play "Twist and Shout" off the top - in your honour - every time i pick up the instrument. Such fun!

Thank you for such a clear relaxed approach. Really getting into the mandolin after 35 years playing guitar its been a real lockdown breaker.

Thanks for the comment Dez...there are similarities to the approach you use on guitar, just need to get your fingers knowing where to go on the mandolin!

It's always helpful to see something new in person. And theory is great. But we get both with Eddy in the pickin' seat. Thanks eddy. I really like the nice iReal Pro touch.

An excellent video Eddie. Comprehensive, instructive and a great lesson. I've been looking for something like this for a long time. YT has plenty videos on the subject, but few with the practical information you have provided. Thank you. 👍

Really great to hear John. As someone who struggled to learn, I'm always asking myself, "what are the gaps out there in the KZbin World?" Every now and then I find one that really strikes a chord (or scale) with folks. Good luck with your jamming!

Thank you Eddie. I've just had a browse at your YT Home Page and there is certainly a huge amount of useful stuff there. I play Fiddle and Mandolin and live in outback Australia with no BG/OT musicians within 150kms. YT and FB Fiddlers has been a Godsend..!! Cheers. 😄

I have learned first position pent scales for several keys. I have found that each scale can be used for two different keys - probably as a major and a minor. For example, the A scale works for C also, and E works for G. Again, there might be a difference between major and minor ‘sound’. The two keys can be figured from whatever key and its 6th degree. Double the usefulness of each scale.

Right Stephen. You are describing the Relative minor. It creates a bluesy sound when played against the "normal" chords of a key. I cover that in Lesson 4 of this series and also have one on the Relative minor. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
