This is phenomenal. I finally see the light after 40 years. My technique for determining scale shape makes it even easier. Depending on which string your root finger lands tells you the scale shape. 6=G, 5=C, 4=E, 3=A, 2=D, 1=6=G. Index finger on play to the right is minor, pinky on play to the left is Major. I also have the pattern down where I know where all the other NEAREST scale degrees are relative to the root. So shifting keys and shapes using the two above is a snap. Knowing all this that you teach makes me unstoppable. Thanks Jefferey. Best instructor on the internet.

@@JefferyJMarshall yeah I’ll feed you my ideas findings etc. I’ve been hard at work the last 1 1/2 years just seeing this fretboard (anatomy) in various ways (mindsets). Skinning the cat different ways. It hit me that the fretboard is a calculator slide rule. Most of your answers are right there on the fretboard especially when moving side to side, chord chasing etc.

Excellent "easy" way to bring a ton of latitude into improv and getting away from straight diatonic stagnation. Using what we already know blindfolded and applying it in a manner that REALLY expands the range of emotion to the lines and phrases. Also forces the lazy side of myself into visualizing and learning the fretboard. This is a really big advance in how I will be thinki8ng Jeff. I cannot thank you enough. In one simple move I am now a sophisticated guy:)

when I combine Am, Bm and Em pentatonics, I am basically getting the full G major scale right? And it's basically a dorian mode when I play it over Am. It would be great to make a video on what chord progression this combination works with. While combining minor pentatonics of the root and the fifth works almost everywhere, the one tone up from the root works only with specific chord progressions. I still don't what theory is behind the "compactibility".

Good observation! This concept definitely works well over a “static” sound. For example Am7-D9. Kind of a Santana vibe. Depending which pentatonic you play against a certain diatonic chord is gonna determine which extensions you’ll get. For example… Gmaj7 if you play Em or Bm pentatonic, it’s money. Am pentatonic doesn’t work as well because there is no B note. You can of course resolve it and make it work. another’s example… over D7 Am and Bm are great but Em has more extensions so you can use it but it begs for resolution. Hope that makes sense.

@@JefferyJMarshall Wow. Thanks for the super fast answer. This makes sense. I will definitely need more time to play with this. I’ve been playing the 5 pentatonic boxes for twenty years. This is great because it opens up an entire new world of tonality without having to learn new scales. It’s “just” about knowing where I can apply what I already know. For twenty years, I was stuck in playing only Am/Cmaj pentatonic over Am etc. Looking for more videos.

@@gordondaviot8445 ya I like to make mental shortcuts. Minor from the 5th over a minor or dominant chord or minor from the 3rd over a Maj7 chord for example. Minor down 1/2 step for Lydian sound etc…
