* Pentatonix wins the televised acapella show, _The Sing Off._ * Their prize includes being represented by a big music label. * Big music label realizes they have no interest in acapella, and drops them. * Gang gets together $400 and films this song in one of their kitchen closets. * Editor adds his magic and composites the various parts. * Song wins Grammy. * Big music label thinks, "We could have been part of that." * Sux for them. Part of Pentatonix lore, but not quite true on the label situation. Sony-owned Epic Records provided them with the contract after winning The Sing Off (autumn of 2011), but drops them about a week later because the marketing people don't believe an a cappella group will sell and they don't know how to market them. Pentatonix begins recording songs by producing videos of live performances on a couch in one of their living rooms. After about eight months of having several videos go viral (summer 2012), Sony relents and re-signs them to their smaller Madison Gate label. Over the next six months, Pentatonix releases two EPs on Madison Gate (PTX Vol 1 & PTXmas). The group hooks up with FifGen Films which begins producing professional videos for them. Over the next year, the group goes on their first substantial tours and takes their time working on their next EP, which becomes PTX Vol. 2. Autumn 2013, Daft Punk song is recorded in a bedroom closet because the studio time they had booked fell thru, and they spend $400 to shoot the video for it in Avi & Kevin's kitchen (this does not include the post-production costs with FifGen). November 2013, PTX Vol 2 is released. Daft Punk is one of the album's singles, the video goes super-viral and the single becomes a worldwide hit...and they win their first Grammy. Sony then switches Pentatonix from Madison Gate to RCA, one of their major labels. The first RCA release is the album-length CD, PTX Vols 1&2 (featuring both EPs with bonus tracks). So, to put it simply, "Big Music Label" was VERY MUCH a part of it and didn't lose anything in the process...although it's entirely possible that some marketing execs lost their jobs over the original 2011 decision.

@@larrywt656 Well, that sucked. I had to do alot of work to find the info out, and I am not sure if the video had anything to do with Madgate. (hey we had pizzagate). So the true parts are they had been dropped by Epic and not picked up by their new RCA when this came out. They paid 400 bucks out of pocket to make this video. It helped propel them to the RCA contract. Such fan deflation should be illegal! Thanks for setting the record straighter. 😢

@@larrywt656 Sony music labels operate quite independently of each other. As mentioned, Pentatonix won season 3 of The Sing-Off on NBC in December 2011. The prize for winning was $200,000 and a recording contract with Epic Records (a subsidiary of Sony Music) which also provided recording contracts to the winners of the previous 2 seasons. Unfortunately, some time during 2011, Epic got a new CEO, L.A. Reid (he had a stint as a judge on the U.S. version of The X Factor), who didn't think an a cappella group could be commercially successful. He wanted Pentatonix to add instruments to become a more typical singing group but they refused to do so. As a result, PTX got dropped by Epic and ended up signing a distribution deal with Madison Gate Records, a label under Sony Pictures that specializes in soundtrack music. Even without major label support, PTX decided to pursue their dreams of a music career by recording themselves with an iPad, singing covers. They uploaded their first video, a cover of Moves Like Jagger, to KZbin on Jan 10/2012 and steadily built up their fan base over the next 6 months from the initial core group of supporters they got while on The Sing-Off. They released their first EP in June 2012 and had their first national tour in the fall of the same year. They also decided to put out an EP of Christmas songs in Nov 2012 and this turned out to be one of their best decisions as they've become closely identified with holiday music over the last 8 years. As their popularity soared, leading to more EPs and tours, RCA Records (the flagship label of Sony Music) sought them out to sign them in 2014. That year, PTX released their first full length album of Christmas songs in October. This album (That's Christmas To Me) reached #2 on the Billboard 200, topped the Holiday Album chart and was the highest-charting holiday album by a group since 1962. It was certified platinum in the U.S. by year's end and eventually achieved 2X platinum. It was the 4th best-selling album of 2014 in the U.S., surpassed only by Taylor Swift's 1989, the Frozen movie soundtrack, and Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour.

I am 80 and didn’t know Daft Punk from Daffy Duck! I now love this video. It’s fun, and shows off some of the talent and creativity of PTX. One must be impressed by the fact that these young kids gathered together $400, arranged the songs and recorded this in a closet, filmed in the apartment (kitchen) of Avi and Kevin, (the studio they were going to use fell through ) and ended up winning their first Grammy. Their God given gifts and versatility have brought them to the top and I have found that there is nothing they have done that I don’t love.

There's a video of him demonstrating it & you can hear it in many of the songs they did those first 6 yrs. Avi Kaplan was the original basso profundo. Pronounced like when the doctor says: say aahh then add vee. Avi left the band due to family illness and personal reasons mid-late 2017. He is my all time favorite. He left on good terms with his then band mates and friends and helped them find his replacement Matt Sallee. Both Avi and Matt are excellent basses they but have different styles. Watching the older performances such as this one, would help put this in perspective for you. The band won 3 Grammys in the earlier days when Avi was with the band. Daft Punk was the first Grammy win. Avi and Kevin Olusola(beat boxer), who were room mates, wrote an original song entitled Love Again. There is a similar theme and it is amazing too. They also wrote Run to You. Kevin does the Percussion and most of the sounds though Avi helps him by doing overtones, whistling and other sounds as needed. They were a super team. Avi now has an impressive solo career that is taking off. If you've not listened and reacted to PTX performing Hallelujah I would implore you to do so. The video has over 600 million views. They also have a live version that is a must watch. It was their Christmas Special 2016. It will blow your mind. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy was the second Grammy win and the third was a performance with Dolly Pardon singing Jolene. So many wonderful arrangements in the earlier days. Please don't neglect them. Its good to get to know them and how they started. It will make it even more sweet knowing where they are now. Their journey has been magical. Thank you so much for the reaction.

Sometimes it is difficult to determine if the sound is coming from Avi (now Matt) or Kevin. A lot of times it’s both - with them both playing off each other so well they create a cohesive sound that’s hard to separate or attribute to one individual. Nice of you guys to do this video as a tribute to Daft Punk. I was sad to hear they had disbanded after all those years together. This was the video that made Pentatonix international superstars. It was their first video to go super-viral worldwide. Not only did it win them their first Grammy, but it also led Sony to promote them from the small Madison Gate label all the way up to RCA. It was just around this time that Pentatonix began working with FifGen Films, a small independent video production company in Los Angeles. This particular video was shot on a shoestring budget in one of their apartments because the professional studio time they had booked fell through at the last minute. FifGen was getting up and running just as Pentatonix was getting themselves noticed by the public, and it proved to be a fantastic working relationship that is still going strong today.

A couple of weeks ago Ben Bram, the main arranger for PTX, was interview. Someone asked him the difference between arranging with Avi being the bass in the group and Matt now being in the group. Ben said there was no comparison. Avi was classically trained and has a 5+ octave range and versatile in every way. Ben said the group had to ditch some of their music when Avi left because Matt just could not handle what Avi is capable of. Avi left because he could not handle the pace. Six years was his stopping point. He is mostly a recluse, living in a log cabin deep in the forests of Tennessee composing his peaceful healing music.

@@YBPlaysMusic It is absolutely possible to do both at once. Make a "shooshing" noise and move your lips from an "oh" shape to an "ee" shape. "Ee" will sound at a higher pitch than "oh", even though "shooshing" is technically unvoiced (doesn't use your voicebox). If a guy sings with the right resonance in his sinuses, it's possible to make the same "unvoiced" pitches out loud, controlling the pitch with the shape of your mouth. We had a song in high school choir that used these overtones. Only one of the guys was able to reach the right resonance to produce them and didn't have fine control over them the way Avi does. Usually you would be holding the same "voiced" note while you play with the overtones in order to keep the resonance steady. And since you got me started on Avi+Kevin's awesomeness, here's something else to listen for: there are times when Avi is drawing out a bass guitar simulation while Kevin is beatboxing snares and you could swear a third person adds in a bass drum at the same pitch because you know it's Avi's note, you know you hear him stretching out the "guitar", and you're sure his lips didn't move or interrupt the "guitar" until the third or fourth "bass drum" beat. That's how amazingly he and Kevin arranged their vocals to interact with each other. Matt is amazing, but I have to say that Avi and Kevin together are unmatched at vocal percussion. They blended so perfectly together that I was honestly stunned to learn that Kevin is a tenor and not another deep bass.

Regarding your questions... Avi often helps Kevin out with the rhythm section, so they will flip sounds back and forth, and Avi will slide from bass beat to percussive sounds and back again in a lot of their songs. Kevin could not tolerate the contact lenses in his eyes, so he wore the visor instead. You can see Avi's eyes are really red from them, too. Also... congratulations on spotting the smoke! @YBPlaysMusic
@YBPlaysMusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi GraffitiTurtle, I can understand your frustration with pauzes, I can relate as I used to watch reaction videos myself, but it is actually different when we record these videos. For some reason, we have a lot of fun doing it this way. Also, I have to pauze the video sometimes for copyright issues, otherwise, the video might be blocked (which makes it unwatchable). This has happened to a couple of my videos already as well. What makes it annoying, is that there's no specific explanation on when exactly a video gets blocked or not, because of this, it is different for every video. That's why I try to lower the chance of this happening by pausing sometimes. So, some reactions might get away with pausing less, but we just can't know exactly how often we should pause or not. I do appreciate you took the time to give your comment, I can always try to improve towards future videos, so thank you!
