The studio version with Dolly and Pentatonix was a Grammy winner. When Pentatonix arranged it, they had planned for Dolly to take the lead vocal throughout, but she insisted that they take the lead on a verse themselves. Even though this is one of Dolly's biggest hits, the version with PTX was the first time the song won a Grammy.

As a PTX fan who is also a Dolly fan and not so much Miley, I prefer the Grammy winning video. PTX got a bigger share of the vocals.

I live in Knoxville, Tennessee about 30 minutes from Sevierville where Dolly was born. Dollywood is a huge theme park in Sevierville. When I was a young girl it was Silver Dollar City until Dolly bought it. The place is amazing and beautiful, nestled among The Great Smoky Mountains in Pigeon Forge. If you drive 15 minutes past Dollywood, you'll end up in Gatlinburg, which is one of the biggest tourist towns in the 🇺🇸 US.

Man I really love Miley's voice. That girl can SING damnit. Put aside her other acting and publicity stuff, but talent wise, she is remarkable. And Pentatonix are the gold standard for Acapella groups of course. Along with Godmother Dolly :-) that's a dang nice sound.!!

Dolly is70 years old in this performance!!! Nominated for 56 grammys, and has won 10! Dolly in the 60's 70's 80's 90's 00's 10's and 20's!!!! No other artist has done this!!!!!

I've noticed that when reacting to PTX, you always make comments regarding PTX creating instruments with their vocals. You should do a reaction to their "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy (Official Video)" (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oKWWoHSvgMR8fZo). They won their second Grammy - 2016 (after their win for Daft Punk - 2015) for "Best Arrangement - Instrumental or a Capella". As you probably know this is from the Tchaikovsky ballet "The Nutcracker". This is a piece written for an orchestra (no vocals) performed by a "band" without instruments. It's amazing. I'll be looking for your reaction, hoping it's soon.

Excellent summary! One of my favorites with an insane arrangement. PTX literally changed the Grammys. They didn’t know what to do with PTX when they hit the scene. They had to change the categories to include a cappella.

Avi Kaplan is the closest to "a country boy" that Pentatonix had. He is a Californian but from the central valley rural area not L.A. He left Pentatonix in September of 2017 and moved cross country to an area actually fairly close to Dolly Parton in Tennessee outside of Nashville. If you want Avi's deep bass on his original songs I suggest "Change On the Rise" or "Chains" however Avi has a range just short of 4 (edited) octaves and, not being limited as he was in Pentatonix, he uses it all in various songs. "Born in California" only has an acoustic video version done from his home cabin during quarantine so far. "Aberdeen" (definitely not the one in Scotland 🙂) will show you where he grew up in Visalia. All available on his KZbin channel under Avi Kaplan. Avi is also a massive nature advocate like John Denver and has become ambassador for the Sequoias and Kings Canyon National Parks in California as of June 11th just up "the hill" from his home town. He says, “It is such an honor to help SPC raise awareness of the threats and issues the Sequoia and Kings parks are facing. To help encourage people to experience all the beauty these places have to offer, and to do as much as I am able to help preserve and promote these places that are so dear to my heart is truly a dream come true.”

Great reaction fellas. One thing I love about PTX, one of many, when they do a collaboration. Every time they do sing with another star, they always show off the person they are with not themselves. Let's face it they could steal the show but they always let the guest shine. I love them for that and part of the PTX magic is that there are no divas. If you are wandering around, you should try to listen to something from Superfruit (Mitch and Scott’s project) - impressive vocals with a fun twist on songs. Sometimes with guests (both fellow PTX’ers and other). You could start with Superfruit featuring Kirsten on Frozen or their extremely beautiful cover of Katy Perry’s Rise featuring Brian Justin Crum, Mario Jose and Mary Lambert (all part of the LGBTQ+ community and song as a tribute to those killed in the massacre at Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016)

Great reaction, gents. And, as always, PTX and Dolly brought it. While Miley has some great vocals, and the woman can sing her behind off, I truly disliked the way she tried to overshadow her much more famous godmother in this performance. Runs, pushing the tempo, dropping the tempo back...you name it, she tried it. Dolly, and PTX, being the professionals they are, though, just handled it. You mentioned that one of you is not a country music fan. I have to say that I'm not a huge fan, either. There are some songs, though, that go past genre. Please check out an unlikely pairing at the 2011 CMA awards: Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake doing Tennessee Whiskey and Drink You Away. It is a master class in musicianship, vocal performance, and a display of talent you don't find recorded often. Cheers!

I have a serious aversion to this song (there was a real Jolene(seriously, she was called Jolene!) who did what Dolly's Jolene did... so yeah, can't listen to it as a rule. Even though PTX is involved, still can't listen to it. I made an exception because I really enjoy your reactions to my favourite group. I sort of tuned out the song and just listened to you guys (sorry PTX, I love you, but not this song). If you're doing the Grammy songs, be sure to add 'Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy' to your list (you already did Daft Punk, and if you do the 'Dolly' version of Jolene, you might as well complete the trio 😉). Some people consider Sugar Plum as a Christmas track, but as we're only a couple of weeks from September (the month when all retailers worldwide start shoving Christmas down our throats whether we like it or not lol) you could maybe sneak it in... Has anyone mentioned Aha, live at Singapore, Star Vista? (Who am I kidding, of COURSE they have). Audio is a bit patchy, partly because it's a phone recording, but mostly because Avi blew the speaker. It's a must see!

Prefer the live studio version of this with PTX and Dolly Parton. Much clearer and gets a 9.5 from me for that. This version with Miley Cyrus, would score a bit less with me too. However this still leaves you in awe of their live audience performances. Great reaction.

I think the performance could have done without Miley. Obviously, PTX knows how to sing cooperatively, and Dolly is a Queen who doesn't have to prove how good she is, but there were quite a few times where Miley seemed to be pushing herself in to get noticed. Oh well, at least it didn't ruin the song. I've seen other songs done with multiple Divas and the spotlight fighting just killed the mood. One example I can think of was Mariah Carey, (and some other Diva of the week) singing Respect with Aretha. Like, don't even try, Mariah's got range, but Aretha had power and experience.

When I watch this version I always think that Cyrus and Parton are too focused on each other. And Cyrus can sing, no doubt, but she doesn't add anything interesting musically. It may have introduced PTX to her audience, though.

@@BritPopsReact It's quite understandable that Parton and Cyrus have that focus on each other. I simply feel that it's a bit much and basically excludes the PTX members visually. It's still a nice performance. PTX are good, Cyrus is good, everything is fine that way.

The first time Pentatonix did this they did it with Miley as a tribute to Dolly at the CMAs (Country Music Awards) I think. They also have done Elvira at the CMAs back when Avi was still with them.

Miley is a good singer but her vocals do not fit in with the others as well as Dolly does. Dolly’s voice blends in with the others and lifts the music up but Miley’s is just a little off and is distracting from the whole.
