First off, I want to say that Marvin Gaye is my favorite R&B singer of all time, and I believe that this is the greatest R&B song of all time. That being said, this was the one where every other group knew they were only fighting for second place. With this one, it was officially OVER! #12 would be the final ultimate mic drop where they finally unleashed the Mitch beast.

Apparently they met a lady 9 months after this episode who was 9 months pregnant and told them she and her significant other watched this performance and " got it on" afterwards. They tweeted the encounter to Ben Folds.

Scott, Mitch and Kirstie were 19 and 18!!! Teenagers. Of course they had chemistry since they grew up together. Adding Avi and Kevin literally the day of the show is amazing!! ❤️ Having Avi help hand pick Matt must have helped make him be a perfect fit!

Actually, Matt auditioned at the same time as several other bass singers at Scott's house. He did not find out that he got the gig until weeks later. Matt knew Ben.

I like how you immediately started body-rolling 🤣🤣🤣. This remains one of their best live performances EVER. ETA: I love what you said about them “perplexing” Shawn Stockman because you are absolutely right. If a member of Boyz II Men, one of the greatest R&B groups of all time, who are known for their a capella arrangements, is left speechless, then you did something right.

We are so lucky they got together. I couldn’t wait every week for the next Sing Off episode to watch them perform. I first noticed their daring, super original arrangements and, as the weeks went by, I was always shocked at their togetherness, cleverness and individual vocal talent. And the other groups were fantastic as well, there was so much talent going on! It’s the only singing show that I liked because there was less fake drama ( a little bit sometimes) and definitely more singing. Plus... the judges were excellent, technical and nicely diplomatic in their their commentaries. I did not like season 4 as much as it inserted more drama and info (??) on the performers’ private life. I want to hear singing on a singing show. When I feel like a soap opera, I watch a soap opera. Anyway, it’s fun to relive this through your eyes. Thanks. 🤗

Really great comments. You are always right on with what you have to say about these. And loads of fun to watch! Can't wait for next two. I really hope you will also do their Season 4 Return Guest Performance the year after they won this. So cool to see how excited the judges were were to see them back again after they had been out on their own for a while. And their performance of "I Need Your Love" was next level. I'd love to see what you think.

Love your singing Dennis!! This is probably one of my favorite songs that they've done. Think about it, they are BABIES here and this performance is just OMG!! The soul in Scott's voice is difficult to find in some that are twice his age here.
@kathyastrom13153 жыл бұрын
That Lydian arpeggio that Scott does at the end is just so extra! Someone on one of the tv forums at the time pointed out the contrast in staging between OMG and this one. For OMG, they had lights going off all over the place and fast paced editing, tarting it up to cover up the song’s lack of oomph, IMO. For this one, the director had them heat up the lights just at the end, and kept the camera mostly focused on Scott.

One of the songs they covered that got them to their win ! :) Marvelous ! Thank you.

Your comments about professional reminds me of the Afterbuzz TV post-ep broadcast reaction to this one. One of the commenters, who apparently worked in the music industry, had some criticism about Kevin’s reluctance to perform OMG due to his religious objections to the song’s lyrics. He said that, if Pentatonix wanted to make it in the music world, they would have to lower their standards and do what the client asked. Turns out that they were able to write their own rules! After their first concert tour, Kevin told the rest that he couldn’t break his religion’s Sabbath and perform between sundown Friday to sundown Saturday. They did adjust their tour schedule with no problems, even getting Kelly Clarkson to rework her tour schedule to accommodate them when they opened for her in 2014. I think by accommodating his issues with lyrics as well, they’ve been able to keep their content and concerts family friendly, which is a big plus, IMO.

Great reaction!! The next one is okay, but the one after that is FREAKING EPIC TIMES A MILLION!!! This performance of Let's Get it On is so fantastic that they incorporated it into their early concerts. They brought up a woman from the audience and sang to her. You have to look it up and see. No need to reaction video though. There are many videos to choose from, but I've heard the Chicago one is highly entertaining.

I always get a kick out of watching Avi blow kisses to the audience at the end here. He was a well-known bass in the California/West Coast a cappella community, having established a strong reputation while in college, and a pretty decent proportion of the Sing Off audience every week were friends and choir colleagues of his. (When you get to the winners announcement video, watch for a group in the audience wearing matching yellow t-shirts. PTX family members, plus Avi's high school choir teacher, who had mentored him toward his college success.) An interesting tidbit - Avi was an opera major in college in 2011, trained as a basso profundo, and had been offered a position with the Los Angeles Opera about the same time as Ben Bram recommended him as bass for PTX in order to qualify to participate in the Sing Off (Kevin was added for that, as well), He chose PTX, staying with them for 6 years, the last couple of which were strained (not only by his mother's illness and his tour fatigue). BTW, you need to react to more Avi songs!

This one is my favorite of their Sing-Off performances (although Dog Days are Over is right there too). Right here is when the other groups realized they were all playing for second place. Just watch the reactions from the other groups in their seating sections when PTX finished. They were just blown away!

I don’t know if you ever watched season 1 of Project Runway, but one of that season’s finalists, Kara Saun, was the costume designer for this season of TSO. So, she’s the one who came up with the color-coordinated outfits.

I believe this is when BYU Vocal Point got eliminated, I know they were in the top 5. And with a performance like this it's no wonder that Pentatonix stayed in.
@kathyastrom13153 жыл бұрын
Vocal Point’s performance of Bobby Brown’s Every Little Step was one of the best of the night, but they followed it up with, I think, My Girl, and that just was bad. Their biggest problem, though, was that they were one of two all male college groups left in the competition, and had never managed to outshine the Dartmouth Aires, who were theatrical showmen if not quite as technically good as Vocal Point. So, the judges had to weed out the same type of group to one and chose the Aires, who ended up in second place at the end behind PTX.
