Whoever said they use autotune is full of shit! The only time they've ever used it was in the 90s dance medley when doing Cher's "Believe" as an homage because that was the first song that ever used autotune. You can check out any of their live performances and see they don't use it.

@@BrunoAlmeida-ck1jp the point is that they don't need more than clean up. It sounds the same on stage and in the studio. Their art is truly top notch because they work at it until they don't need auto tune. They just use a few effects on certain types of songs. It's not gate keeping or anything, it's that you don't take away from their talent and hard work.

I'd say any purist derogatorily claiming, "Autotune!" (except when used purposefully in the 90's Dance Medley during the Cher song) is not paying attention to the huge number of times they have been completely unable to use it, and still sound perfect. 😆 In the VIP meet-and-greets they perform a song just standing there, feet away, and there are also plenty of videos of them singing sitting on a couch, or in a stairwell, or doing private off-the-cuff performances, with no mics or anything, or even huddled around one mic on the crappy PA system at the gate of an airport, all recorded only on an iPhone, where they are mind-bogglingly accurate. It saddens me to think of people living their lives with an apparent need to tear down extraordinary things that talented people do, instead of celebrating and enjoying them. What a depressing way to live! I really liked your reaction and commentary, and I am happy you're not letting the naysayers sap your enjoyment!

Kevin Olusola, the beat boxer, is most known for his celloboxing, i.e., playing the cello (or electric cello) and beat boxing at the same time. And he sings. A recent video that highlights all three of his skills is the PTX cover of Seal's Kiss from a Rose (Vevo). Kevin also does solo work on his own KZbin channel that often includes looping that builds layers of his cello playing, singing, and beat boxing.

The first verse, sung by Scott, I agree with you. That was "so clean". It is easy to be awkward starting out alone like that, unaccompanied. Scott's phrasing, and the way that he can swell, pull back, and swell again is masterful.

Thank you! I believe they put so much of their “real” selves into every arrangement, every song, every performance, that I don’t care about the postproduction they use on their official releases. Their live concerts and the live recordings they share show they can all really sing well. I think they are working towards getting a capella on the radio, and the super clean sound is what’s required to do that these days. They work with some really talented sound engineers who care about the a capella genre and enhance the sound instead of making it unrecognizably washed out.

2 words: Pentatonix Hallelujah
@margretrosenberg4206 ай бұрын
Because it appears that I missed giving you these details before, these are the members of Pentatonix. In this song: • First verse, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's range extends from about midway through a normal bass range to a fairly high tenor, probably about 5 or 6 octaves. When the bass solos Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line. • Second verse, dark haired guy next to Scott: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves, but he's most comfortable in his higher registers. He switches between chest voice, mixed voice, and head voice seamlessly, and is known for his ethereal high solos. Everyone in Pentatonix says he has the best voice of any of them. • Third verse, black guy in a white jacket on the far left: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. It's hard to be sure just what Matt's range is, because it's still growing. To find his current range I recommend listening to a live stream of "Hallelujah" from their most recent world tour, though you may want to watch their official video of "Hallelujah" first so you can hear what it sounded like with their original bass, Avi Kaplan, who left Pentatonix in 2017 for personal reasons. You can find the recording with Matt here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKLTmZuGltWepcUsi=tC6Ew07JGeQKQvDL Matt's arrangement of the second verse seems to be designed to show off his full range, which is fantastic. His lowest notes don't blow out speakers the way Avi's have done (though they may within a year or two), but on the high end he's very close to the top of a normal tenor range. • Fourth verse, the only woman in Pentatonix: Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, alto and soprano. Kirstin sings anywhere from a low alto (though not contralto, which is the female equivalent of baritone) through coloratura soprano, the highest female range. And she has whistle notes on top of that which are off the charts. Lately Pentatonix has begun referring to her as an "alto soprano." • The fifth member of Pentatonix is the black guy on the right: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Somewhere there may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does sing he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He began piano lessons at age 4, cello at age 6, and alto saxophone at age 10. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on the cello and once on the saxophone. He graduated from Yale in 2011 with a pre-med major and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional beatboxer instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. Matt joined Pentatonix in late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it), after their original bass left the group for personal reasons in 2017; he has now been with Pentatonix longer than their original bass was. Which brings us to the one member of Pentatonix who doesn't appear in this video: • Bearded white guy who usually wore a beanie or stocking cap: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo - his lowest notes have blown out speakers in live performances - but his range extends upward to about the middle of the tenor range. Since leaving Pentatonix Avi has gone on to have an extremely successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his KZbin channel, which you can find here: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic The appearance of Mitch and Kirstin tends to vary greatly from one video to another, so people will frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Kirstin or Mitch. With these two, go by their voices, not their appearance; their voices don't lie. To be clear: Avi is the ONLY member who's left Pentatonix and Matt is the ONLY member who joined later.

Kevin has a beatboxing technique I'd be willing to bet you've never encountered before, anywhere, because it's original to Kevin. And no, I can't give you examples of him doing it; I THINK he only does it in concerts and I don't have a good enough ear to hear when it's happening. I only know about it because Kevin discussed it in an interview Pentatonix does a LOT of touring, singing in concerts worldwide, and they're very careful to protect their voices. One way they do that is to drink a lot of water. They keep water bottles on stage so they can stay hydrated during performances. But all that drinking means that they have a bit of a problem with a need to burp during performances. Kevin got tired of fighting the burps, so now he just uses them; he figured out a way to incorporate them into his beatboxing. (And at this point in the interview Kirstin gave him a dirty look.)

I have a few songs I'm going to suggest since you are a beat boxer, the first being the Daft Punk Medley. There are some really great BB runs. As far as Kevin slapping his chest, and stomping. He actually invented a "slap pad" (inside his jacket) and a "stomp pad", that both plugs into the sound system, so when he slaps or stomps, you actually hear him doing so. I don't have time to get into all the songs I want to hear another beat boxer's opinion. If you listen to their Bohemian Rhaposdy, Kevin actually sounds like an 808 in it. He changes what he does in every song. Now as you have found out their record company is stupid when it comes to copyright issues. But most reactors I have heard from (about 25-30 or so) have found they copyright the video more than the audio, so if you will make the video more transparent, or blacked out and place some text over it (your name, Pentatonix, “covered with text for copyright”, a logo just anything, and then pause now and then to talk, it will help to keep from getting blocked. With their label and YT nothing is guaranteed, but from what the other reactors have said, this things create an 80%-90% improvement, at least you meet all the written rules, unless the reviewer is having a bad day.

Pitch correction is used on recordings ( nature of the business) and that is because they are given shockingly very little time to record albums. ON Top of that they often do not record together. Pitch correction is used to save time and money to get the album out without the need to get them back in the booth. Trust if they ONLY relied on it, they would not be one of the top live musics acts, their shows are amamzing!

The best thing a reactor could do is listen to an official video, and then find a corresponding live performance of the same song. I’d suggest you find a live stream version if possible, otherwise you get a little bit of a crappy version if you’re watching it through somebodies cell phone. But everyone needs to take a breath and calm down. Too many don’t really know what autotune is, and just assume it’s to fix ‘bad’ voices. Yes, I suppose it can do that to a degree, but it’s a lot more than that and is used virtually 100% of the time for professionally produced and recorded songs to tweak minor pitch errors. PTX makes their bread and butter through touring, and they wouldn’t have lasted 13 years with dozens of tours if they sounded like crap on stage.
