I shot film for 46 years before I tried digital. I figured digital was just a fad. Now I wouldn't want to have to go back to film at all. But, your shots with that little Pentax surely had a nostalgic feel to them. One of my friends had a half-frame and he shot 35mm slide film with it exclusively. He made some good images when we got stuck in Hawaii for a month in 1964.

I've seen many give this camera an absolute ribbing as a disrespectful take on film cameras made just for social influencers. Therefore your real world experience and balanced thoughts are very refreshing. Kudos to Pentax for not taking themselves too seriously, but still producing what looks like an excellent tool that has its place.

@@ThomasHeatonPhoto most labs can't scan 1/2 frame. I run Kodak's lab in Raleigh, NC and we can't deliver 1/2 frame scans and we're freaking Kodak. Most Noritsu LS600 and Frontier scanners last made 30 years ago have no feature to scan 1/2 frame. You would be asking a lab to spend extra time going in and cropping 2 pictures to make a frame delivered. It's madness. If I got a 1/2 frame roll in, I would send the negatives back to the customer. You have no idea the havoc that can ensue with Noritsu drivers when they see something they can't interpret. Your scanner can be down for hours on the fritz. Pentax did not think for a minute about how customers would obtain scans of these negatives.
@MeasuredLight

@peteanddrake4242 any of the three labs I use with regularity here in Australia have no issue scanning half frame. The Noritsu and Frontier scanners have an actual half frame mask that makes scanning half frame easy. I worked in one of those labs, and we had no issues with haf frame 👍

A great use of camera! I began my pro career with Olympus Pen-S!! Front page news, the whole front page of largest morning paper in South Africa! I was Stunned by your shoot! It's exactly the way I shoot! Geez! I still shoot similar, many more verticals, in FF 35mm. The lil Oly long dead! wish Pentax would have used a wheel to advance film! Like motor drive!Oh! 1/2 frame FITS standard paper perfectly! It can be enlarged easily! Self developing, cut out shorter lengths exposed.. Pentax ought to congratulated! Bravo!

Good review of the Pentax 17. Very cool to see that you made it to Monument Rocks in Kansas, it is a great place to photograph especially at sunrise or sunset. I have watched several reviews of the Pentax 17, you are the first to mention the dial getting changed while advancing the film when shooting quickly. It is good to know about the possibility of this happening. I don't think that most users will be shooting at a rapid rate. I am considering getting the camera, your review was helpful. Looking forward to the upcoming videos of the USA trip.

I waffled on this camera with the initial release and almost pre-ordered it. In the last few weeks I've watched people posting videos and images of their photos from the Pentax 17, and I have to say, I'm impressed. I think a lot of the price is in the quality of the lens. I've seen some amazing photos taken with this camera. I'm definitely picking one up at some point.

"Toto, I don't think we're in Whitley Bay anymore..." 🙂 And I think the wind lever is designed to be left out while in use, like the Pentax MX and LX before it. Just tuck it back in when you're done shooting. Though I always am a fan of dials that can be locked or unlocked based upon the users preference. And... if you think that was cool, try the Pentax K3 Mark III Monochrome, it will completely up-end what you thought was possible with digital. 👍👍

What's up Thomas? What I like about you is that you're not afraid to learn everything about photography. Most young photographers can't think past digital. After digital they are really lost. My first reloadable film camera was a Pentax 725 point and shoot, purchased back in 1995 after a trip to Sedona, Az. Looking at you handle that camera brings back fun times with that camera. There's a back-story to the camera that would take up way too much space to write. As always, great video, God Bless. Peace!

You didnt mention the square frame on the back of the camera. Pentax fitted this to their film cameras so that you could tear off the end of the box the film came in and slot it in so that you knew which film you were using. Very useful in those days when film could stay in a camera for months at a time. Also useful now if you change film frequently.

The overall photo quality looks great. Thinking about the half-frame element, I can see either going very fine grain, or SUPER coarse grain to lean into it. For travel and tourist shooting, it feels like something that could be a lot of fun with a lomochrome 92 film. I think, also, with the fixed lens, the symbols absolutely fit the tourist and vacation vibe. This feels like the kinda design similar to old Trip cameras and the like.

Nice look at the 17! It is an interesting camera. 👍 Good point about the mode dial and film advance ergonomics. I used Pentax for quite a while with the *ist DS being my first DSLR, so I've got a general fondness for the brand. Hopefully this camera is a success for them so they will make more models and do some Kaizen magic on the 17 with another look at the ergonomics and material choices.

Allegedly the film wider knob of the Pentax 17 and its mechanism is derived directly from the Auto 110. I think you are more in tune with the whole process of making an image when shooting film, you have to get it right cause there isn't much post processing most of the time. However, $500 is a bit much for this one.

I don't know how the team at Pentax sold this idea to leadership, like I really want to know! I'll be honest, probably never going to shoot film again, but it makes for a really wonderful aesthetic, even shooting behind the scenes or just random moments that it is all final and collected in a single roll, you're not culling through images or checking focus, it just is what it is. No faffin about as they say. I should throw my X100 into jpeg mode and treat it the same honestly. Not the same but I do enjoy the immediate results.

Photos look great! I was more excited about Pentax 17 than I should have been. The only issue I have is the around 500 moneys it costs. 149 moneys and I would have recommened it instead of Kodak Ektar 35 or similar products. Looking for your tornado photos. Those will be twisting good for sure :)

Dang, I would have loved to show you around some of the epic spots in Shenandoah National Park! There are some amazing hidden gems practically in my back yard too!

I like the idea of the camera but unsure about the price vs functionality of this iteration. There’s the Mint Rollei 35 coming out in Sep which I might be more interested in.

I had a Pentax half-frame camera as they called them when I was in Vietnam in 1969. It appealed to me then because I got twice as many photos out of a roll of film as my buddies did. Not sure they make much sense in this day and age.

As far as I know, Pentax never made a half frame. Ricoh did, long before acquiring Pentax.

Looking forward to the storm episodes. I have to confess that even though I enjoyed my film camera years, my income tells me to stay in the digital world.

Much more interested in the Rollei 35AF coming soon, now that’s a proper film camera

Agreed. Pentax (or whomever) did a great job handing out these toys to filmfluencers to generate hype. But when a real camera comes out in autumn this thing will be forgotten. The price delta between the Rollei 35AF and the Pen17 is $300 and more than justified by the improved image quality and camera features.

Welcome to the USA! 🇺🇸 I’m surprised why post to IG when you had to wait for the film to be developed? Selling point to me would be nostalgia of film photography, print production and the quality of the prints. Looking forward to your USA travels.!

Pentax seems to be on to something here. Lucky analogue people. I'm a digital guy, but this is tempting just for fun in between the professional work.
