Pentax K1 vs Pentax KP , Review + Image quality test

The KP looks superb in the context of APSC and may well be a Fujifilm substitute. I want to see the actual replacement for K3. The KP is a good teaser but they need a scaled down full feature APSC version of the K1 with all the bells and whistles including twin card slots and a serious battery. It can be done. Hope they land something mind expanding. K1 is terrific, KP is a sleeper but definitely a sign of things to come.

In regards to the different white balance...The KP isnt seeing the same scene as the K1. A separate test for white balance may have been done with the KP pulled farther back too equalize the composition of color within the frame. I think that would have been a more accurate comparison of white balance between the two.

K70 is a good value too. Even in 2019 as low as around 500-600 USD with the 18-135 WR lens. 24Mp WR camera with flip-out screen, 100% Vf , pixelshift etc.

There are two ways you can approach such a comparison. The first is to set them both up with the same settings and lens, as you did. The second is to take the same picture, by using a wider lens or moving further away with the crop camera or by cropping the full frame as you might for a telephoto shot. I'd say that the second approach is the more valid because we don't just put lenses on cameras and press the shutter, we conceive a shot and choose the lens and setting to get it. My expectation for the second approach would be that for a wide shot the K1 would have a huge advantage because you're using the whole sensor and subject is closer but that for a long telephoto shot the KP would be the clear winner, again because more of the light refecting from the subject is being captured by more pixels. So it boils down to whether you mainly shoot wide or long. I see no point at all buying a full frame camera and then croppng (unless that crop is a useful resolution as it is in the K1).

Can you use the custom modes with a manual lens on? With my Nikon D7000, I cant use the custom modes and only Manual and Aperture Priority mode when I use a manual lens.

If their new camera is either unimpressive or out of my price range, I won't mind "settling" for the kp. I just realized it's been 2 years since my original post, and I'm still waiting! I'm not in a hurry because my older Pentax dslrs seem to do what I need. I'm really curious to see what Pentax comes up with.

@@unbroken1010 I have 2 k01 bodies. One is modified for full spectrum ("poor man's" near UV to near IR). I love them both! I have so many k mount and M42 screw mount lenses, i really want to stick with Pentax if I can.

@@unbroken1010 I got my full spectrum conversion already made off of eBay. The seller is "eeassa". It looks like he has one ready to go. I bought mine many years ago and paid a hearty price for it, but I've been satisfied with it. Most lenses will work well with IR with filters. For near UV, I use a deep violet "wasserglass" filter along with a light blue green filter to absorb residual red. To actually see into UV, I've had to resort to using very old single coated screw mount lenses since most new lenses are designed to absorb UV. The old brand that seems to work best is Petri. They were probably made in the early '60s. Keep in mind that these are "poor man's" UV lenses. You can Google for quartz lenses, though they cost a fortune. One quick tip on manual white balance - ideally use a piece of white Teflon, though in a pinch, you can resort to using concrete sidewalk. Good luck! I should mention that Pentax made a full spectrum version of their kp that they refuse to sell to the public - unforgivable!

I have fallen in love with your channel bro! I can tell you have a bias toward Pentax and Nikon, but I love the tests on everything. My kid chose photography for one of his electives next year, so I will give him my K-s2 paired with an FA50/1.7. This means I get to get another camera. This test made me pick the K-1. Especially after seeing this camera compete against the big boys. I've been wanting to go full frame for my high end legacy and Zeiss lenses

Shooting Pentax crop for some time(I have 3 of them; K50, K5iis and K3) White balance is on the warm side on them all. Until you custom of course.

Yup! The only reason why I do AWB is because most people leave it at that and they just post. Most of the time if you know your scene, you can adjust the WB accordingly. All in all, I usually do AWB unless its a big project and I have to try and get everything right the first time. Hopefully Pentax user will keep this in mind when they look at their photos. Pixel density is virtually the same. There is negligible difference in IQ other than WB from all reviews i've seen. Both still hold up great, even in 2024. Pentax know what they are doing...but what direction is next?? Mirrorless? I love the OVF much more over my Olympus mft - both have their strengths, hence they work well together, both loved.

Every time you say that one has more noise because of being a croped sensor I think you should explain it better, because it can lead to important miss understandings. These cameras are both fantastic. And you don't need to say they are Sony or Nikon killers. You only needed to show what they are capable of, in terms of photography and, mainly, in terms of possibilities of control customization. This is where these jewels shine. And you didn't do this. Only pixel peeping...

yes KP vs D500. before last NOV-DEC when I traded all my Pentax to go Nikon, I fouind I started to go back to K3 ii and besides better eronomics, images were as good as I could do with KP. My only AF issue with PENTAX is that whatever I didm I could not get person (1) of more people within cityscape at most distances to be sharp. camera loved edges of buildings etc, toom much. very reare to get both in single pic to be good. It smooshed faces. Unless a specific portrait shot.

@@unbroken1010 Not hardy ever (got a few nice full or half figure candid event pics for friends with one or two lighted figures) did I have groups of people outside. Anyway, I can't see anything sharply close. I have to rely on experience with body and lenses, and AF system responses than what I see I I t takes me lots of time to change the way I use any of this. I did start to like the K 3 ii more than the KP and started to adjust better to its focus system and controls, not long before I went thru with trade ins for change to NIkon. I had a lot of nice K lenses too. They way my eyes are, I can do better if in manual focus, with mirrorless, with EVF and magnification. Thank you,

Thanks for another cool video! KP is great but I believe the K3 is a better crop camera with its more pro features; dual card slots etc. I shoot pro sports and portrait photography, use a K3 with limited lenses, and have had only stellar results. Yes, the K1 is better, but if you're not shooting at high iso's the K3 is killer for the money and smaller/lighter! I liked your video as I usually do even though I don't care much the KP on its lack of features alone. It is nice to see from what your showing in this video compared to what I get out of Pentax's flagship APS-C K3 II as a hobby photographer is still the choice for me. There are rumors running around the interwebs of the new flagship APS-C replacement being announced someday and sure it will be nice to see a K3 III, but I'm not in a hurry. I would rather wait for them to make actual improvements with there APS-C related tech or some kind of feature I actually would want to have or use in a Pentax before pumping out another flagship just for the sake of it.

Don't buy a kp, I bought one and it was to small for my hands ( I have nerve damage so it gets pretty excruciating using it after about 10-15min ) I have tried selling it and four lenses and a whole lot of other stuff like filters etc and I pretty much cant give it away. Where I live the things cost almost 2500$ new and I want 900 for all of it but the highest bid I've gotten is 300$ It's a good camera and the battery holds longer than Pentax says but it have absolutely no resale value.
