I live and went to school in the uk. I don't necessarily think that the debate for men wearing shorts at work/school is primarily a gender issue. I actually think it stems from the old fashioned values that only young boys wear shorts and wearing trousers is a sign of being a 'man'. You'll notice that Prince George is always photographed wearing shorts and long socks. Having said that, I do think that this is something that needs to change! I think that it should be common sense for employers and schools to allow people to dress appropriately for whatever weather conditions. You cannot be expected to work efficiently in stifling hot conditions. So long as you don't turn up to work in neon hot pants I don't see the issue.

I think you're right- this is definitely something I've noticed. When I was in high school (in Australia) most of the boys wore shorts in summer, but the exchange students who were mostly from Asia still wore long pants. At some point, they were asked why (wearing pants during a heatwave when you can wear shorts seemed silly) and it was for the same reason you give- only boys wear shorts. Weather appropriate clothing should be a no-brainer and isn't a reflection of being not being manly-at all.

My only concern with the gender neutral marks on driver's licenses is whether or not this could affect how well paramedics are able to identify your biological sex, because, well, biological sex matters when you are receiving medical care. In an emergency situation, will that little "X" matter? If it doesn't, then I'm all for the gender neutral marks being allowed. If it does, however, then I can only hope it doesn't result in any problems.

Damian Leyva As far as I know, there are no medical consequences regarding gender. Only if you care about a men touching a women's body or the other way around, but doses are based on weight, not gender. The only thing that is different when treating a male or female at accidents scenes is the defibrillator, because of the boobs, and those are pretty damn obvious.

After researching further, most particularly this report from the US National Library of Medicine --> www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3388783/ it would seem you are correct, but it may be better to treat someone based on their sex. As is stands currently, however, medical care doesn't particularly care about your sex (except in specific instances that don't exactly come up in an emergency situation) and, getting back to the original point, these gender neutral marks on driver's licenses don't seem to matter in the cases I worried about. So, as stated previously, I'm all for these marks being allowed.

EcoMC2 I believe they are referring to the fact that, in the case that there are breasts (which is easy to tell most of the time), there is a different method to using the defibrillator that doesn't depend on sex, but the presence of breasts. I am not completely sure on the the matter though. That is simply how I interpreted it.

As someone who works as a dispatcher, the only issue I have with gender "x" at the moment is simply law enforcement systems technicalities. Sometimes sex does not figure in on getting returns for driver license information, but I've had a few where the subject had a name popular with both genders and a common last name, and the file would not return without a gender. If someone chose to change their designation to "x" how would it affect their older arrest records with their original gender designation, would there be a catch to help get them to return, because they don't alter older records? But that's it, not a real issue, only wondering how it will change how I do my job.

During the French Instagram model's unfortunate death report you said she had a heart attack when the report shown said she went into Cardiac Arrest. While a heart attack can lead to Cardiac Arrest, one can function as normal for a good hour (depending on how sever the attack is) before they seek treatment. Those who go into Cardiac Arrest have seconds to seek help. Cardiac Arrest essentially means the heart stops. And when the heart stops there's no blood flowing through your lungs, though your brain, through anything that blood typically flows through. However I have been working in the medical field as a pharmacy tech for 13 yrs now from a medical stand point we need to know if you were born as male or female to ensure that the mess you are getting will not ha you in a negative way yes medication will effect you differently if you are male or female, i.e. Viagra/ flomax/ Premarin etc for a governmental identification to not specify what GENDER you are could have negative repercussions especially if all they can identify you with is a drivers license because you were in a major accident you could not be identified properly at the scene

thomasdjrasta I'm not entirely sure from the wording, but I beleive the "viagra" example was tied to the pharmacy experience. Even not in an accident(emergency), it is potentially life threatening. I have been to doctors(that I no longer see for this reason) who prescribed me things and said theyd be "fine" for me, then got to the pharmacy and the pharmacists said there was a terrible mixup that tthis medicine would actually have horrible reactions for me based on medical history or a drug interaction. There are plenty of medications that have sensitive reactions based on the many differences between gender, mass, body fat, etc.

I worked at Walmart 12 years ago as a cashier and I was one of the only male cashiers employeed there. The dress code stated that men could not wear shorts but women could wear capries if the temperature was over 80 degrees, which is basically all year long here in the desert. So i wore baggy jean shorts (it was 2005 and i was 19 so bare with me) and called them capries. There was a write up and a lot of back lash but then corporate came down and changed the rule and we were allowed to wear shorts from then on.

What state IDs are issued where the label is Gender: instead of Sex:? My ID [in Texas] says Sex: People who raise awareness for nonbinary genders always say Gender =/= Sex; Sex refers to your biological, reproductive organs, Gender refers to basically, how you present/feel/wish to be treated [the social aspect]. If IDs all say Sex: instead of Gender:, doesn't that, by their own definition, render this argument moot? If there are states where it's Gender: not Sex:, would it not be simpler to just change them all to say Sex: and then add the option of I for Intersex?

I'm also not sure if maybe some people would grow up to be intersex because their family couldn't afford to take them to the doc to remove the parts that they feel should be removed. If those folks were medically fine and wanted to own their intersex-ness, then whatever, ya know? But the ID thing would be a genuine conundrum for those types of people.

In high school, there was a dress code about hair color ... the policy read something along the lines of 'hair color must be red, brunette, black, or blonde' ... and being a person who (in a previous school system) would frequent the blues and pinks i dyed it Ariel the Little Mermaid red. So on the adding an X, personally I don't care about gender identity but there is another aspect which is gender/sex. For instance in donating blood in Canada males can donate every 56 days and females are every 84 days to decrease the chance of donation caused anemia. The removal of sex based identification for a newer identity based identification actually has people here arguing that they identify as male so they donate as a male and that is the problem. I feel we need to define a hard line between gender identity and sex and the fact that many people ignore the ramifications for removing sex is quite disturbing. That is my thoughts on this

Given that you change sex using hormones that change your body physically, should there be 2 options like this: 1) Born as a Female/Male and then changed sex Yes/No?

I think it's very important that the gender on identification cards accurately represent the person's biological sex. In the case of an emergency, people looking to help should be able to give accurate medical support based on sex. Providing an X will only make trips to the hospital more difficult and time consuming taking precious minutes in a critical emergency

Phil, I dont really care about the gender neutral drivers license. As long as you're not hurting anyone, and its legal, do whatever you want. If someone wants a x on their license, go for it. Philip - a change the rules story. We grew up in Texas, north of Dallas in a suburb renowned for its conservatism. When I was in college, my brother (then in high school) decided to recognize National Coming Out Day by wearing a dress. Now, you have to get the visual here. My brother - a 6'5", athletic dude - in a short blue dress (well, it was probably a normal dress, but he was tall) (side note: he said the worst thing was having to shave his legs and wear hose). He was immediately yanked from class, and my dad called. School: You're son is wearing a dress to school. Dad: So? School: But your son is wearing a dress. He needs to change. Dad: Is there a rule in the dress code that says he can't wear a dress? School: Well. No. But...he's wearing a dress. Dad: Yeah. No rule against it. Next school board meeting amended dress code guidelines to prevent males from wearing skirts or dresses. My brother's response was to try to convince Dad to get a traditional kilt in our family plaid.

The reason genders are included on ID cards isn't related to how you identify or anything like that. It's simply so, in the event that you're involved in an accident and your body is messed up beyond recognition, you can be identified as the person you are. If all other physical traits other than your actual organs have been destroyed, that might be all there is to go on. It's not really about whether society accepts your gender identity, it's about ease of identification.

That seems like such a rare case that it's absurd to base rules on that, and the government has access to your biological sex anyway, so why should it matter? ID cards are there to identify you--that means that they should reflect your identity, who you are, as much as possible. I'm a passing transgender woman, and if my ID said male, that would case far more confusion in far more situations than it saying female.

It's not rare Bashfluff, people are horribly disfigured in death fairly frequently...fire, car crashes, being dropped in vats of acid after being dismembered, cave ins, decomposition is NOT rare. When someone finds you and it says female they are going to take a look at your bone structure and conclude you were born male. Sorry. That being said, if you feel wrong in the body you are in, that is your prerogative, and you should do you, but there is little evidence that HRT or other transitional therapies will make you feel better or even keep you from taking your own life...there is a chemical imbalance one way or another that needs to be addressed not just swept under the metaphorical rug...

the gender roles people express are fluid and practically infinite... i dont think this means we need to invent a million different pronouns based on subjective feelings...especially when laws in Canada are being pushed to where you can potentially go to jail for misgendering someone. To a certain degree, marking the correct biological sex on a drivers license is important. Male and female bodies are different, and react differently to different forms of medication or treatment. In an emergency situation where a person's life is in danger and EMTs are trying to save that person's life, they need to know what medications and treatments are going to be useful, and how that person is going to react. That being said, I'm very much an individualist. If the person in question is aware of this fact and the possibility that it might negatively affect their chances for survival in an emergency situation, go for it.

I don't get the gender debate. Does it apply to animals? My take on it is this: You can call yourself whatever you like, but there needs to be a term to describe the glaring difference between the male and the female of any species. So if you decide that gender is a social construct, then we need another word to describe that biological difference, because we can't act as if it isn't there.

My only thought is when trying to identify a person or suspect will they say, "we are looking for a non-gender person that looks like a guy/girl"? A driver's license isn't part of your social media, it's supposed to contain information that would best identify you as a person for legal reasons. if your drivers license has to say male because you were born with a penis but you on a day to day look like a woman, how does it help if your driver's license says male adn your photo doesn't have makeup? trans status on driver's license would have more benefit to people being identified by their ID than saying male or female if they're trans and don't look specifically male or female. so i dunno, how does knowing if someone has a penis help if you're not identifying them by their penis?
