Speaking of power generation and fossil fuels and products in general, the high standard of living we had ( past tense) was because of those items ! And if you’re an old fart ( guilty) , you would have noticed the de industrialisation of western countries to our detriment , and that goes double for Australia ! In the days of decades past , we made so much of our own stuff , these days we now import much of what we need to get by. Not having an abundance of base load energy on tap for industry , for citizens is a recipe for economic poverty and never ending debt for every man woman and child in Australia . The cost of living is a disaster for the average person , the cost of living equally is also equal to the cost of doing business in this country. When you have a government that cannot restrain itself from wasteful spending, a government that cannot prioritise spending two things can be assured , taxes and especially those indirect ones that sneaky prime ministers and treasurers put upon the people and industry , cost of living disasters like we have now are assured. What about state spending , let’s take Victoria for an example that spends money like we have a forest of money trees , they cannot even prioritise hospitals and ambulance and police services first , they are busy digging train tunnels that could have waited another 10 years , or at least until some of the state was in better economic conditions. But hey , Jacinta Allan can rename lakes and give away hundreds of thousands of dollars to religious groups for their events while the state is in debt up to the moon . What about immigration overload , crime overload rampant around the country ! Our defence forces way below needed numbers ! The failings of the current federal government , and some state governments like Victoria are a disaster! I am old , never have I seen our country in such a mess.

The air conditioner control device is interesting - in Qld it is called a DRED (yes I am not kidding). Demand Response Enabling Device. The person who came up with that could clearly see the future. Load control has been around for at least 15 years as the SEQ utility has had demand response from at least the 70s with control over hot water systems. This used a signal over powerlines to switch your hotwater off at peak demand and back on at night as well as control things like power to bakers ovens etc. The DRED was a natural extension. This dose save a lot of money in not just demand response but reduces the network augmentation costs as well with the customer saving by having a reduced tariff. Only works if the customer does not notice it so has its limits. So Matt the households have been experiencing this for a very long time and it is NOT new.
