Of course. I don't know if the western world has had a massive head injury, but that's what a tribute is. I tribute something of MINE to the intended recipient as a show of respect. If they just did carbon copies of Akira's style it wouldn't be an offering. It would be a nothingness, just like what's going on in the head of all the people stirring drama. The point is that each tribute takes a piece of the person offering it. As these are artists, their offering is Akira's IP done in the style of the contributor. Oda's tribute should look like his own work. All the mangaka's drawing Dragon Ball in their styles, is like welcoming Akira's work into their worlds. Showing that Dragon Ball exists in everyone's own personal worlds.

It’s genuinely sad because it just shows how dehumanizing the internet is. Oda looks up to Toriyama and Toriyama really cared for Oda and his work. Oda drew something which (doesn’t even look bad) but it was special to him and you could tell he put a lot of Effort into it. Dragon ball’s last chapter was 1993 and the final volume release was 1995. One piece released in 1997 and didn’t become number 1 until 2000. It’s first year it barely made the top 10 60k away from 11th and 20k away from 10th. So no while it became known as a spiritual successor, not really, One piece popularity has no relation to Dragon Ball. Oda gives respect to Toriyama as did most mangaka from his time as his inspiration, but the only relationship between the two mangas is from eventually being the best. Yeah, but the thing there is that there is an expectancy when it comes to mangaka authors since they are supposed to be really great at "drawings" since they live off it. So when the selling point in a lot of illustration is the face and it looks "derp" in an amateurish way then ofcourse some people are going to point it out and bandwagon around it since in their eyes Oda doesn't show much appreciation in his tribute. @ That’s such a weird expectation to have for a tribute to Toriyama that’s simply drawn in someone’s unique artstyle though. I’d understand more if the artwork is clearly unfinished or something, but the tributes is straight up just Oda’s usual artstyle. If someone isn’t a big fan of his artstyle that’s okay but i don’t see why it’s necessary to comment that on a tribute to Toriyama, its not like Oda is trying to “replace” or “improve” the original art or something. I truly do believe this is because Oda’s artstyle generally isn’t the most appealing to a good amount of people on first glance and less of some type of amateur mistake. I also feel like there’s a lot of misrepresentation of Oda’s artstyle and people say all his characters look the same, most notably said to be his female characters which I don’t agree with at all. I partly blame the anime for this because how the characters looked in the anime didn’t always completely reflect how they were originally drawn by Oda in the manga.

I like Oda, he became friends with THE Akira Toriyama, I mean the dude is doing things different now after Toriyama Sensei died and all, and with all that transpired, respect must be given where it's due and considerations where necessary. The same thing about changes in characters in other anime, light novels or manga can also be found elsewhere. I'm a fan of How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom but if you look at say Maria Euphoria from it you can see her light novel, manga and anime adaptations feel quite different. The same can be said of others but in that series I find her the most notable. People can easily see Goku's alterations because he's been the face of the series. But then again Oda was asked to draw him in his style and besides the face, which is rather minimal as an issue, it's theoughly Goku. It might actually be best he looks this way since Goku is a cheeky adult running around living off his lack of anything other than martial arts and farming.

People who look for reasons to be mad and outrage on Twitter by saying shit like Oda should have his hands cut off is wild to me. And I agree that they don’t deserve to be a fan for Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Bleach and other shows, especially touching the manga ever again if they’re going to continue to be pricks for no apparent reason whatsoever. Oda paying tribute to DB and Toriyama isn’t disrespectful at all period. And people who think it is are absolute morons.

People need to realize that Oda is making a tribute. Not trying to get a complete recreation. Different artists have different drawing styles. And they'll always draw a little differently compared to other artists. Oda shows that he tried, and his drawing style isn't bad. It's just something the dragonball fanbase needs to realize, you're not going to get a perfect recreation of an art piece. No matter who it is.

the mouth is too close and the nose is small BUT oda smashes it theme wise. this is 100% something toriyama would draw. like everytime oda makes a tribute to an another author he understands the manga itself and goes for that. sure its in his art style but everytime I see a tribute It only tells me he just gets it he understands.

wait so people are saying oda draws the same faces just because he gave goku a luffyesque face. for one no one in one piece looks like luffy one for one, maybe roger in his younger years but we havent seen that yet. and seriously. toriyama did the same faces a lot. goku gohan and goten for one, hell u can probably throw in yamcha too. and more if u wanna take a closer look. this i feel happens to a lot of authors they sometimes draw similar faces because how often can you draw a very unique face without going out of your way to do so especially in a weekly release. in that sense oda excels at making very unique memorable characters

We have actually seen a few glimpses of young Roger (such as when he first met/recruited Rayleigh) and he looks a lot like Luffy (especially his smile), but I'm pretty sure that's intentional.

Oda is actually extremely talented as an artist and can draw in many different artstyles (in the volumes he shows off paintings a lot, many being impressionist/realistic and they look amazing). He drew Goku to have Luffy’s eyes to draw the parallel, but the problem is Luffy’s eyes look really goofy on Goku. At the end of the day it’s really ok, it looks off, but he’s not at all a fraud/untalanted for it. It was very intentional.
