Conan O’Brien has talked about how people who approach him in public and say something nice to him often seem to feel an intense need to qualify or temper their compliments in some way. Like, “I didn’t think I’d like your show at first, but ___,” or “My friends told me not to expect too much from your podcast, but ___.” I think there’s something pretty interesting about human psychology buried in here. I’m not saying that it’s good or it’s bad, but it’s definitely very human. Maybe they’re concerned their compliment won’t sound genuine if there’s no nuance or complexity to it, maybe they think the compliment will sound more meaningful if it’s overcome some sort of dramatic obstacle, maybe they’re worried that this figure they like so much might view them as a totally obsessed fan. Who knows. My gut instinct is that it has something to do with how common it is for people to feel some degree of discomfort about any expressions or displays of pure positive sentiment: how it makes us feel vulnerable to do so, and how others might interpret it as a bit unhinged… or worse, insincere. What DOES seem to be certain is that if strangers who recognize you are afraid of seeming like they like you TOO much, then they probably really really really appreciate what you do.

@FreedomIII3 ай бұрын
I think your take makes a lot of sense. The other thing that's come to mind is that people might feel that "I don't normally engage with things in your field, but" actually elevates the compliment further, i.e. your work was so good that it overcame that person's dislike of your field ┐(´д`)┌
@YolandaTurlough3 ай бұрын
I think this is a really good point! I’ve heard people complain about compliments like these enough that I’ve learned to make it simple (“this is great! I liked [blank]!”), but I’ve never shaken the feeling that it just sounds so plasticky and vapid, and just like you said, very insincere, even though I do mean it sincerely. Saying things like “I normally don’t like this genre, but I adored this! I liked [blank] about it” or something like that feel much more real and genuine to me, and like it might be providing better feedback, or at least a more complex response, but it seems pretty universally hated lmao. Anyway, I really agree, I think it’s interesting how many people seem to do that.
@ValkyrieTiara3 ай бұрын
As someone who has had to get over the natural urge to do this, I think generally it's the second and a little bit of the third options. Less that it won't sound genuine, but more that it will sound MORE genuine or MORE meaningful if they know that you went in with no bias (or "better" a negative bias). Or, rather, it FEELS meaningful to the speaker. "I thought I was going to hate this thing, but I ended up liking it! That's how good it is!" We want people to feel the way we do, or at least to understand our feelings, and that context is important to us so it feels important to express (blind to how the sentiment might appear to someone who has not felt that context for themselves, as in the video). I think it's a similar drive as the one that causes people to insist that streamers play games in a very specific way, which is the way that THEY played it. They felt something that was important to them, so they want to MAKE SURE that you feel that same thing. They only way they know how to do that is to have you recreate the exact circumstances of the experience they did. I think there's also a bit of "I don't want to appear crazy, I'm cool and normal and I like them a normal amount" involved as well. For sure that's something I feel whenever I meet someone who's even a tiny bit famous lol
@FelixHelixihare3 ай бұрын
I think it's also because it makes it clear that what you're saying is not hyperbolic. They want to tell them that they really like them, and give justifications and reasons as to why they like them.

I don't care if someone prefers Subs over Dubs but it's obnoxious to constantly complain about Dubs even being a thing. Yes there are a lot of shows that have bad Dubs but so does every other country's animated works, it's just Bad Voice Acting. And then there's the people who complain on a reddit post of someone asking if a show even has a Dub. We get it, you prefer listening to Japanese VAs but not everyone does. Some of us want to listen in our native language and not constantly read subtitles. Dubs never replace Subs (at least I've never heard of an app or site doing that) so just go watch that version and stop bothering everybody.

@StupidMarioBros1Fan3 ай бұрын
@@truthteller7283 Yeah at least regarding English Dubs most of the bad ones people think of are from decades ago, the biggest problem with modern English Dubs is that it's typically the same handful of studios so you get a lot of repeat VAs. Sometimes it's cool to recognize someone, other times you just think of a different product the whole time if they do the same voices. This isn't anything new for Voice Acting, a lot of American cartoons have repeat VAs but there're more studios that handle those and a lot of those VAs don't cross over into Anime Dubs, so there's simply less choices & less variety.

Funnily enough, I feel this whole “dubs bad” thing isn’t even really true anymore. Obviously there are the occasional stinkers, but I feel like dubs on the whole nowadays are fairly solid. Like Trigun Stampede, even though I've switched almost entirely to subs or raw Johnny just did Vash too well and is too big a part of my image of him for me to not watch that in dubs when it came out. Even as a subs watcher though, I appreciate the dubbers who are out there doing the work and trying to bring faithful recreations to people who want it in English.

I love dubs. I often find it difficult to just sit down and watch something without doing anything else at the same time. With subs i have to be glued to the screen and i just find it hard to make that commitment. So subs vs dubs is the difference between watching something vs not watching it at all. My best friend is dyslexic so she loves dubs. She will watch subs but she has to pause the video to take her time to read each line, so it's basically just a graphic novel for her at that point. She probably wouldnt be an anime fan without dubs existing. Dubs are just so great, dude.

As someone who compares subs & dubs pretty often, I think most of the "anti-dub" people just don't like Funimation, which has had a near-monopoly for years and tends to rush VAs for everything but the big-ticket shows. Sometimes, it really does sound like the director said "read these lines from these 3 shows, and also this booth is booked for 5 other people after you today, so you can only do 1 take for each line". That being said, ProZD (and several other VAs) do tend to put out really good performances, despite the probably rushed working conditions.
@ShadowStarkiller3 ай бұрын
I tend to assume that because these people so adamantly refuse to watch dubs, they just assume that standards haven't improved at all since the 80s and judge dubs based on that. But yours is an interesting take as well.
@dsproductions193 ай бұрын
@@ShadowStarkiller That is a common, but understandable misconception, because the few who say that are sadly the loudest. From what I've seen, most know that the dub standards have increased, but many tend to see the 80s-90s dub eras as being "cheesy", "so bad it's good", or just nostalgic. A primary example would be Ghost Stories. As a dub, it's does an objectively poor job, but people still enjoy it for many other reasons. In comparison, when Funimation has dubbed most seasonal shows the past few years, the result is seen as competent but has other issues which make it less fun. For example, it takes a lot of work with writing and editing to not only translate the script so it flows well, but also insert the new lines in a way that sounds natural. Like if a character's monologue in Japanese was written to be perfectly in-time with the music, but the localizer doesn't do the same, the effect is ruined regardless of how hard the VA tries. In the eyes of many, that company seems to reserve effort (and funding) for a few big shows, while the rest get the bare minimum time to get it done. The point is, the complaints very rarely are about the actual voice actors directly, but more so about other issues they see in the end product and industry at large.
@KingOfElectricNinjas3 ай бұрын
The thing is I think a lot of people used to subs basically default to them if the dub is even just mediocre, since even if the original voice acting isn't great either it's far less noticeable when you don't know the language anyway. That a dub actually adds something to the experience is a pleasant surprise.
