@avalasialove5 жыл бұрын
The doctor in the first story did not need to administer all of those pregnancy tests. HCG is much more prevalent in blood than in urine. If she really was pregnant the bloodwork would have showed it. Also, here’s a word to the wise: Don’t try to flirt with the people who are trying to take care of you. It’s inappropriate and distracts them from their work.
@TheNormExperience5 жыл бұрын
Avalasia Love - I agree, but I have had to do something similar (the secondary pee test that is) when the doctor noticed the nurse had asked if I was sexually active in front of my family instead of one on one. Just as a way to be extra sure, and to avoid drawing blood unnecessarily, which I absolutely understand. But again, that was within the first hour I was there so they could rule it out. Them following up with an ultrasound makes less sense, especially because the girl telling the story never mentions if they actually palpated her stomach/abdomen/pelvis to see where the pain was, though I assume they would. But the unnecessary scheduling of Emergency Surgery does completely baffle me - if they had gone ahead with that and found nothing, they could have been SO sued! That IS scary. From what we’re given to go on by her story, it sounds like the doctor made up his mind and stopped there. Just looked for anything that might support pregnancy, ectopic or otherwise, and stopped looking, which is sad. Especially if it was just constipation!
@CookiesTriedToEatMe4 жыл бұрын
It sounds like he tried to do a pregnancy test because of her weight, which is a really trashy thing to assume in the first place
@avalasialove4 жыл бұрын
CookiesTriedToEatMe Like I said, the blood test he ordered should have already been appropriate because HCG can be detected better in blood than urine. Therefore, the blood test would have already provided enough proof. So ordering extra pregnancy tests was not only a breach of protocol, it was a waste of hospital resources.
@Kiki-uz9ur4 жыл бұрын
@@CookiesTriedToEatMe She didn't look overweight though. So no I don't think it was her weight. I think it was the fact that she was a young, sexually active, attractive girl. Doctors always assume pregnancy when someone like that comes in.
@rachaelking10064 жыл бұрын
Avalasia Love sounded like a point of care urine hcg was ordered to me, not blood. Those are less reliable and can be falsely negative depending on training as well as interfering substances. Instead of doing two of the same test, he would have been better off confirming with a test performed in the lab whether serum or urine as they likely use a different methodology. Still, if he were that convinced, he could have ordered a quantitative hcg (serum) off the bat.

My ER story horror story: Drove myself to the ER (to try to avoid ambulance costs) , don't ever do this folks ever, made it to the parking lot of the ER, opened my car door, and fell onto the pavement and had a seizure. Luckily a good samaritan went into the ER and got me help. Just call an ambulance, I know it's expensive (here in good ole USA) but I could've had that seizure while driving which endangered myself and others.
@whychoooseausername47635 жыл бұрын
Ugh, only in the USA. When I was in SF a few years ago, I saw a group of young people one of whom had passed out on the pavement due to alcohol intoxication. I'm a med student from a country that has Duty to rescue laws (even stronger than Good Samaritan laws that only protect you from prosecution for wrongful deaths if you make a mistake when helping a person in danger - in my country you can be prosecuted for failure to assist a person in danger), so naturally I go to help, put him in the recovery position, and ask someone to dial 911 (he couldn't get up or respond to verbal instructions, his friends were drunk and didn't know what to do, it was cold and this guy washing the pavement with cold water was about to douse him - he was basically on the edge of hypothermia or an alcohol induced coma). His friend comes screaming at me, almost menacingly, telling me not to call 911 because just the cost of the ambulance would land him in debt. I ended up leaving, but I wonder what happened. As a teenager at summer camp in Spain, I called the ambulance for a 14 yo in our group who had passed from drinking too much too fast. My friends were scared of us getting in trouble, but I made that executive decision, and later learned he arrived at the hospital with hypothermia and waiting longer could have been very dangerous. Cost never played a role in that decision making process.

@Supahsinger5 жыл бұрын
I has the same issue. I had a huge, persistent (wouldn't go away on its own) ovarian cyst that ended up causing pretty severe torsion when I was 13. My parents took me to the ER multiple times in 1 week with excruciating abdominal pain and they always wanted to do multiple pregnancy tests. I was THIRTEEN and yet some of the nurses were super nasty and disbelieving when I said I wasn't sexually active. Some of the nurses and techs were perfectly nice (I never blamed them for asking. It's important to rule it out) but more than one seemed to go out of their way to make me feel worse than I already did and shame me in front of my parents. I eventually had surgery to remove the cyst and fix the torsion (I think my surgeon said my fallopian tube was twisted 8 times or something crazy like that) but only after nearly 7 months of chronic, 10 out of 10 pain. Yeah...not the best experience. Particularly since I was so young. But I came out of it with a wicked pain tolerance and a strong desire to advocate for myself!

Each time they told me it was a uti or something to do with my lady parts and sent me home, no bloodwork or anything. My fiancé(now husband) and my mom finally convinced me to go again(to a different hospital) when I was starting to change color. We get to the hospital and they instantly take my blood and send me for a ctscan. My blood comes back and they were freaking out, my white blood cell count was 39(39,000) normal is 4 to 11 (4,000-11,000) which means I had a very severe infection and when the ctscan came back they came in and said “the surgeons on the way” we all freaked, not knowing what was going on then they rushed me into surgery. Apparently my appendix had literally died in me about a week before, it was shriveled up and black. I probably would’ve died if the other hospital was as bad as the first. And that’s only one of the two emergency surgeries I had before 18!

My ER horror story starts at the house I was living in during my first year of college. I was living in a digs(in a house where a family lived, I just chilled in their spare room) and I got my period, i had always gotten horrific cramps and nothing helped. So i got up to use the bathroom and as i am leaving i feel fuzzy and everything goes dark. I wake up to the daughter of the house banging on the door and people shouting at me to wake up. I was only focused on the fact that I was in my underwear coz I was sweating (ew). I opened the door and puked everywhere. The parents of the house weren't home so she called a neighbour who then called an ambulance. I had no idea what was going on, who I was or where I was because I hit my head on the sink as I went down. One thing I remember is the paramedics struggling to put converse on me. I get to the ER and they do the initial tests, blood, blood pressure, asked me questions. At this point I'm just still in excruciating pain, I was all alone, I wanted my mother who was 5 hours away and just barely turned 19. So they hook me up to an IV and leave me on a bed in the corridor, i rang my mam and broke down on the phone. They ignored me for 10 hours, gave me neurofen (kids painkillers). Then a guy from college who I only talked to like twice showed up and was like "hello I'm here to see you" no thank you I'm dying. Then after 10 hours and 3 bags of fluids they move me to a waiting area because they need the bed, the put my IV bag on a coat hanger and wait til it's done to tell me "oh yeah you just stood up too fast" . . . I made the 5 hour trip home that weekend and visited my OB, I had a concussion and a large ovarian cyst and the worst endometriosis this guy had ever seen. So yeah TLDR; I got ignored for 10 hours in excruciating pain because doctors thought I was a drama queen

OOOOH that first story pissed me off. I went to the hospital once because I was having migraine symptoms, but no actual headache so I didn't realize they were all migraine symptoms. I had no idea what was going on, but it had lasted almost a week and I was getting worried. Like, I could barely walk. So anyway, I went in, and the first thing they asked me is if I was pregnant. I said no, and they tested me anyway, and even when the test came back negative they kept asking if there was a chance I was pregnant and wanted to test me again 🙄 It turns out there is a thing called "silent migraines", which I was eventually diagnosed with. The doctor gave me a shot of migraine medicine and I was feeling better literally within 20 minutes. I was in the hospital for HOURS. If they had just listened to my symptoms and tried that in the first place instead of wasting hours re-testing me for pregnancy, I could have gone on my way and not wasted everyone's time. I get that they want to test for pregnancy, and they should, but pregnancy isn't the ONLY possible answer when a woman has a medical concern! This is why I insist on female doctors whenever I can, and I don't feel bad about it AT ALL. It's the only way I can be taken seriously. 😡

It's so frustrating how when a girl comes to the ER cause of stomach pain the doctor asks a million times if she's pregnant. Back when I was in middle school I fainted in class cause my stomach hurt. They took me to the ER and the doctor asked me multiple times if I was pregnant. He only believed me after I told him that if I was pregnant I would have to name the baby Jesus.

Not to be that person, but having a hot nurse when you’re sick isn’t a horror story, that’s just life. Try waking up during surgery to see a bunch of blurred towering figures with their hands on your face with no memory of why or how you got there, then having a mask slapped on your face when you try to move so you can be drugged again. I also had a really bad reaction to the gas they used, so I was in pain for the next week. That was my ER horror story.

I went to urgent care and they found an ovarian “cyst” the size of a grapefruit right where my pain was coming from but still thought my pain was just constipation. Every other doctor I saw after that said it was a TUMOR and that I had probably had ovarian torsion (which is a common risk with ovarian massed and can be dangerous) that righted itself Urgent care prescribed me some horrible drink that’s supposed to act as a laxative that 1) didn’t work 2) made my pain even worse to the point I was vomiting and 3) other doctors after that said that’s literally the worst thing they could have given me lmao

something similar to the first story happened to me. I was at ballet when my side started to hurt ALOT. My teacher was scared it was appendicitis so my mom was called and picked me up. we went to the er but it was flu season so after taking blood work we sat waiting for 2-3 hours. Then I was finally seen and throughout this whole time my side was hurting. when the doctor came to see me he said "there is a 99 percent chance you have appendicitis but we don't operate on children" which was scary so I had to be put on a rolling bed thing (don't know what they are called) and rolled to the ambulance to head to a children's hospital. Anyways, the guy driving the ambulance got freaking LOST and it took another 30 minutes than it should've to get to the hospital. When I got there they did some more tests and said that I didn't have appendicitis and it might've been a cyst on my ovary. Oh, also my parents and I didn't get that news till the morning cause the doctors said that they would be "seeing me soon" once we got there and I guess "soon" to them was almost 8 hours later, but at least they gave me a room to sleep in. Only good thing was that I got donuts afterwards.
@Mausiroo4 жыл бұрын
oh my god literally the exact same thing happened to me. Went to the ER with pain in my side and abdomen. I got an ultrasound where they found my ovary was enlarged. Slapped an IV on me and told me I was being transferred to a nearby children’s hospital for emergency surgery because they also didn’t operate on children. My ambulance driver also got lost which made the hour long drive even longer. Got the surgery and turns out I had an ovarian cyst. Small world! aha 😅

@@iamgosa yeah do the tests but not send someone into an emergency surgery with no signs besides pain and no reason otherwise. As it sounds more realistic to rule out major things first they usually check for less serious things first because they're more common. All they did was check for blockage (find nothing) and give her 3 pregnancy tests. Given I don't know WHAT kind of surgery it was so that would change a lot depending on what kind. But either or as someone training to be in the medical field that was completely wild to me. They probably would have been able to sue for thousands if she went into that surgery. Here is my story, I was like six or seven at this time. Me and my family were eating lunch. I was going to town in the carrots because carrots are my favorite veggie. I took a big bite out of one and forgot to chew and it slid down my throat. I thought it was going to be like when you take a big bite of chips and it scratched your throat. But no, the piece of carrot was stuck in my throat. I ran to the bathroom an tried to throw up so the carrot would get unstuck but I didn’t throw up. I tried a few times but nothing worked to make me throw up. That was and still is the one and only time I hated having a strong stomach. My mom took me to the ER and we got a x-ray. Turns out that it had just scratched my throat and wasn’t really stuck. Chew your food kids!

i’m 15 and since the age of about 9 i’ve been getting this aching pain on the right side of my abdomen. first they said it was appendicitis, but then it wasn’t. the pain kept going on and off for a year but then stopped for a couple of years after that. at the beginning of january i woke up with really unbearable chest pains so my mum said that she would take me to the ER(im english) the nurses there were so condescending. telling my mum she shouldn’t have bought be in even tho i literally couldn’t walk. then i got taken to a bed in the er and at first i couldn’t lay on the bed i had to sit on the floor to be the slightest bit comfortable. then the nurse came in and told me she would have to put this needle in my arm incase they needed to give me any pain killers. i watched like an idiot cos i’ve had blood taken before and i was fine. but i passed out as she was putting in my arm. so a whole bunch of nurses came in to help lift me onto the bed. the only thing i remember is as soon as she put the needle in my arm, the pain went away. to this day they still don’t know what the pain is and i still get it constantly
