It's actually a lot easier than you think in this day and age, if it's China you want to go to. Just do a little bit of prep (for e.g., installing a good VPN on your phone for overseas travelers to access apps that you are used to within China), plus Google translate (by image), and you are pretty much good to go. English-Chinese translation on Google (and vise versa) is fairly powerful. And don't you worry about bypassing the Great Firewall by using your phone; ten of thousands of foreigners (and actually millions of local) do it on a daily basis in China without ever facing any problem. The authorities don't give a damn unless you are a spy or trying some shady stuff.

Yeah, like some other viewers said in their comments and yours too that the more modern looking buildings were build by Chinese Taishan emigres from all over the world. The irony is, is that I felt absolutely safe travelling China, and I absolutely did NOT feel safe travelling USA, knowing that their citizens carry guns (40,000 gun related deaths in USA every year. I was probably in one of the most remote areas in China, some small place in Heilongjiang close to the Russian border. It was a truly amazing time, super friendly people, amazing food and a wonderful evening culture with events, music and dancing. I guess the funniest thing was when some old Chinese called me 苏联的人 (Person from Soviet Union) perhaps because of the geographical closeness to Russia 😂 yet a bit outdated

Many may or may not be aware that a lot of Cantonese Chinese who left for the goldfields of Australia and California, and many other places elsewhere all over the world were from Taishan (they refer to themselves as "Hoishan" or "sei yap" of "sze yup" or etc (4 districts?)) people. Perhaps life there was hard so the people there had to seek their fortune in strange lands overseas, without any knowledge of their language.
