I hate people who skim through mental health articles or only read about the therapy techniques themselves(and not how to properly implement them) and decide that they’re experts and can “fix” you. Exposure therapy is only used on the patient’s terms. In any and all instances possible, it’s done in the therapist’s office in a controlled environment. It’s NEVER supposed to just be randomly sprung on people as that, more often than not, just causes people to distrust others and worsens their condition.

I agree with you Ellen I don’t feel bad for the woman in the first story I feel bad for the husband like he got her a bunch of nice things and then she’s mad because he didn’t get her a watch. If she wants the watch she can go get it by herself like the husband said and the husband doesn’t owe her anything considering all he’s done for her. The husband is watching their kid and taking care of everything while his wife is on vacation and she has to be this ungrateful and entitled. It wouldn’t kill the wife to appreciate what her husband got her instead of exchanging them and trading them for something better like bruh who exchanges a gift that someone got them. If I were the husband in the first story I would’ve returned the gifts I got her as she showed that she’s ungrateful and picky.

I highly agree with you he is such a good husband he buys her gifts and he doesn't seem to mind and understands that his wife can be picky I believe it was reasonable for him not to get the watch and the bag because why would he waste his money on something she could possibly not like so the opportunity of going to get the gift when she came back was a reasonable and smart Idea but the wife was ungrateful basically acting like he's never done anything for her or like he hasn't taken the time to get her gifts before that she was probably previously ungrateful for you never return a gift someone gave that's a meaningful thing it is also common courtesy because not everyone has the things you may have im sure her husband has given her lots of great gifts and I'm not just talking about materialistic things but I feel how he feels getting treated like shit over a dumb watch in bag that HE WAS STILL GOING TO GET WITH HER

The fact that she got back from a nice trip and all she could do was complain about the ‘gifts’ he didn’t get her? Screams entitled behavior. Personally, I think the woman who ultimately left her husband did the right thing. Who is her husband to try a shock like therapy to get her past her fear of fire. He's certainly no expert. Not to mention that he literally told her that he was tired of her "antics." Good for her to finally see the light. The last story was heartbreaking. I agree with you....no one was really in the wrong. I do believe, though, that she should talk to her coworker & straighten things out. She was in the throes of grief and desperation, which caused her to behave in a manner that didn't take into consideration that this person's religion is just as important to that person as her sister was to her. When you mentioned that the manager should have been the one to find a replacement I was like....EXACTLY! What happens when someone calls out sick. What really struck a chord though was when you mentioned, "what if you're in the hospital....(not exactly words, but close)....Well, I had that situation. I was in the ER & called my job; I had been in the ER for over 5 hrs and was very ill. I called work & my boss literally asked me "how much longer do you think you'll be there? What time do you think you'll be in?" Like....WHAT!? I was extremely sick, so I had to spell it out that I would not be coming in to work. He kept asking me if I was "sure." What? I swear, some people.

I totally agree, you cannot scare someone into "accepting" their fears. That's the worse thing you could ever do to your partner. You cannot ever force them to fear that they are not ready for. We are all scared of something, big or small but that fear is exactly the same. Be safe, babs. Xxx

I agree. I think 'shock therapy is the real thing (or something similar), but it should only be done by experts who know what they're doing. My mom had extreme phobia of roaches, and if someone attempted to, idk, throw one at her, she could have literally died! If you don't know what you're doing, leave it to the professionals.

Exposure therapy works. I’ve used it myself, but it doesn’t work for everything. I used it to get over my anxiety with phone calls (mostly), but it doesn’t work for traumatic mental wounds. That guy didn’t take her trauma seriously, and I’m pretty sure he was thinking she either did it for attention or something similar. Otherwise he wouldn’t call it antics. He sounds like he lives in his own bubble and can’t be wrong. Besides that what if he accidentally burned her?

Last story; the boss is breaking the law. Compassionate leave is a legal requirement of all employers. S/He has no right to tell her otherwise. On the other hand, she should have gone to the boss first rather than asking a colleague who can't work that day. The other colleagues are just rude for not even offering to cover the shift.

oh hell no on the last story! For one thing while there are no federal laws requiring bereavement leave in the United States, but this doesn’t mean you are out of options. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law that permits you to take up to twelve weeks of paid time off for family or medical reasons. (at least in my state of the USA IDK about protections it if they're from another country/state though?). The employee in the post is entitled to at least a day off as needed for close family members funerals or sudden death, her boss has to let her have that day off and the BOSS has to be responsible for covering the shift suddenly not her. This is literally illegal where i'm from we're protected to grieve for exactly OP's reasoning and if the job is protecting someone's religious right of a day off and not this situation, she can sue them for wrongful "something" but that is hella sketchy company and a horrible boss and co-worker and workplace environment in general. It'd be better to go to the funeral and just look for a new job, as otherwise she'll live that regret scarring her with guilt for years possibly, while there's always other jobs and only the stress to find a different one.

Honestly its so messed up how her work environment turned on her, boss even threatening to fire her, over HER SISTER D Y I N G They all most likely knew why she was trying to ask the only available someone to just take the shift for her, and no one offered to take the day for her instead knowing she just lost an incredibly close family member. 0:00: "Look at the bumbeez!" 🐶 0:11: Her husband treats her so well, and she is so ungrateful. She should be so fortunate to be married to someone like that. It all seems like a miscommunication, though. 5:17: Her husband was being a prankster, and it backfired (no pun intended) badly! Glad she's considering divorce. Hope she finds an understanding partner. 8:17: This is a complicated one. I respect that a worker can't work on a certain day because of religion. However, this person could have asked another coworker to switch or to talk to her boss about the situation. In regards to a death in the family, this person should have received the time off they needed. If this place wasn't willing to do so, maybe they need to find another place to work.

I agree except on the husband being a "prankster". He wasn't being a prankster, he was being a bully and a freaking a-hole because who, in their right mind, acts like that towards their loved one, knowing it's a trauma ? He didn't do it as a joke, he apparently seriously thought it was okay to do it because he was "annoyed by her antics". Because, of course, he would make it about him. Divorce is definitely the solution here.

I'm 19 and I have a big fear for darkness (which my doctor confirmed to be an actual phobia). So I always sleep with a little light in my room. I have 3 cousins (2 girls and 1 boy) with whom I have to share my bedroom because they don't have one. So the guy makes fun of me and hides my light at night because he doesn't want me to use it... in my own bedroom. I literally have to eat up my tears and everything because he just laugh more at me. And if I snap back, then I'm the rude one
@ItsMinnowSeason
@ItsMinnowSeason 2 жыл бұрын
Gosh at that point I'd choose violence (/j /nsrs) or just not sleep there anymore, I'm terrified of the dark too I can't just handle it Also- if possible, make him sleep somewhere else and explain to whoever tries to get after you for it why. You have a doctor who confirmed you truly have a serious case for it, and its your bedroom- you shouldn't have to suffer in your own bedroom because someone else thinks its funny. If the light is bothering him, he can sleep somewhere else. He's the ungrateful guest, he should be treated as such. You're doing him a favor, and he's trying to act superior for it.
@samgnz3n530

Keep the overhead light on then for all of you all every-time he hides it, and say "i either have little light or all light" if anyone complains move to other rooms dinning living room, kitchen and sleep there (taking your mattress or a bunch of pillows and blanket whichever), show the seriousness it is to you that you will move every night he does this to any area that safely gives you light, if he then wakes up to turn off those lights then it's war and just dunk water on him every time make to make him uncomfortable and other's problem (as scaring him awake will probably be loud and wake up them) too. If a doctor's confirmed it then i hope it means that someone, you're with cares and doing all this show and not just tell that it a huge problem for your wellbeing and will get it him to stop. Sleep is needed for humans to live and if true darkness doesn't allow that to happen in your case and someone it fricking with your solution then they don't need sleep either. Also, this dude needs to invest in eye-masks to block light if it bothers him to take a nightlight but that's probably him just being a jerk.

As someone who also has a phobia that people would find silly (fear of dogs in my case) I can totally empathize with you!! It took me having a meltdown for my friends to understand that I was dead serious about my fear. First story: The op really asked if she was in the wrong for being a selfish and ungrateful person. The husband should not have to apologize for one letting her get some time off with family, two buying her nice gifts even though she clearly doesn't appreciate them and three just not buying her gifts she might consider returning because they're not to her liking. He was waiting to go shopping with her because she clearly is very picky and would have been disappointed if say the freaking color of the things she wants was wrong. Honestly she sounds SUPER SPOILED. Second story: Wow that 'husband' is a piece of work. He really thought traumatizing her more would be good for her? Is he a freaking sadist because he clearly enjoyed causing op fear and more distress. The fact that he thinks showing op something he knew would cause her to panic would be good is infuriating as hell. Why tf did he ask her to marry him if he's so annoyed with her trauma? Honestly he sounds like a complete a hole who has absolutely no understanding of how trauma affects people. Not everyone reacts the same way when going through something which causes them distress and I'm going to base my assumption on the ending here, I don't think he was even there for her when she went to therapy. Op is a true 👑 for knowing her worth and hopefully leaving that... for good because she sure as hell deserves someone better. The last story: Honestly my deepest condolences to the family and especially to op for their loss. Grief can be extremely strong and some people can't deal with it in a healthy way. I think op was wrong for asking that one coworker even though she knew that that coworker would never work on Saturdays because of their religion but the boss probably knew about the situation and wouldn't allow her just one day so on top of dealing with grief op had to worry about the possibility of getting fired and like you said was really desperate to find someone to cover for her. Maybe there was no one else who could cover for her so she turned to someone who just might. Obviously the coworker was never at fault and op should never have asked her but honestly all of the things that happened was the boss' fault for not allowing her just one day to grieve and not go to work.

Yeah, last story. Many US businesses give tons of authority to the shift managers - and also have “At will” employment, where anyone can be fired for any reason- or no reason at all other than “protected class” (religion, sex, age, disability, race, national origin, etc.) reasons. So the boss could literally fire her if she couldn’t find a replacement for her shift.

It's one of those situations where they could have gotten the gift she wanted AFTER the trip since they missed their opportunity to shop. And if she was that desperate for a smart watch for the trip, why couldn't she buy it online? It's the fact that being scared of fire isn't even an uncommon things, and it barely hinders one's abilities to get through the day, so I really don't see why the husband's irritated by that (especially since it's an understandable thing to be scared of.) it is interesting she was so adamant on not working when most religions want to encourage compassion. Working to help someone with their grief but missing church seems like most religions would green light that. Either way it is her choice and I don't blame her. I'm just overall confused about the story. Why did she have to ask that coworker not someone else? Why couldn't the boss do it? Isn't denying leave to attend a funeral in most places illegal? Why did all the coworkers turn on her? I understand she was pushy with her coworker and that wasnt very respectful, but do they not understand she was just desperate and not coping very well? I think her and the coworker could talk it out later cause they both just wanted to defend something important to them. Personally I would just not show up to work. The boss is already threatening to fire her. Time to find a better work environment

"Exposure therapy" works. For a select *FEW* phobias. For a phobia activated by a trauma of any kind it is the *WORST* thing you can try as it 110% is going to make things worse. What was that husband thinking, if anything at all that is? That if a paid professional can only try to heal a trauma on a person over years if not decades than he himself surely will cure it by confronting the traumatized person with the trauma? It is good she left his worthless butt. And I hope she sues for mental anguish. She surely will win. Otherwise he will not see that he did anything wrong.

I hate people who try to “fix” other people just by reading about it online. It’s like removing your own melanoma with a pocket knife. You’re not an expert, and it’s probably gonna make it worse, opposite of what you were trying to do. Phobias need to be respected. Exposure therapy is only done in controlled environments and with the patient’s consent, not throwing it out in front of them, and it’s only performed by professionals. You don’t have a degree in psychology, don’t pretend you do. It’s stupid. Obviously, don’t do this, because it’ll make the person lose trust in you. You don’t want to be like that. And if you’re a victim of this action, please, dissociate yourself with that person. If you think exposure therapy is right for you, make sure that a real, trained professional is performing this, and do your research so you know what to expect.

The last story is sad, I mean, I understand that she desperately wanted time off and idk what religion says that you can’t work on Saturday… but I don’t think the girl is wrong for asking. I don’t think she insulted any religion she was just desperate. The fact that the coworker gave her the silent treatment and blew it out of proportion is a bit uncalled for… have some sympathy. With that being said I do hope she talked to her manager or boss. That probably would been a better option, as normally they would be more sympathetic (if not I would quit).

Two religions that don’t allow work on Saturdays (and are VERY strict about it - even if you work in health care, you’re not allowed to work on Saturday) are Seventh Day Adventist and Orthodox Judaism. As far as talking to her boss - as I stated in a separate comment, many, if not most, private employers in the US are at will employers. And give a ton of authority to their shift managers. So the OP’s direct manager could fire her for taking off for her sister’s funeral, and there would be nothing the OP could do about it. And many jerk bosses actually would do that or worse. I read/watched a video on a story involving a CVS pharmacist who died on her job because she was having a heart attack and the store manager was planning to fire her for “leaving without permission” if she left to seek medical attention.
@lunarialoonatic

I mean, unless the lady in the story insulted her directly and kept being persistent I would understand the coworkers anger. Like Kyutie said, it’s honestly a rock in a hard place. Tough situation for both of them. One who legitimately can’t work and is probably tired of the begging of people wanting her to work on Saturday (I bet other coworkers have asked) and the woman who is grieving her sister :/ sucks that the job can’t give her some leeway.

@@Idklol2866 Saturday is generally considered the seventh day of the week (in many languages, the name for Saturday literally means "sabbath" day). Christianity moved the day of rest to the first day of the week (Sunday) because of Jesus rising from the dead that day (which is why in many languages, the name for Sunday literally translates to "the Lord's day"). But Jews and Seventh Day Adventists still celebrate the Sabbath on Saturday.

I think that following your religion is totally right, of course, but would you knowingly take that stance when it'll force your coworker to either skip the funeral of their dead sister or quit cuz they don't have other option? In my opinion, when religion stops following empathy it's fucking shitty but I acknowledge it's her right. I know I'd rather ask for forgiveness to God than to make someone take that kind of decision. That's me tho. Also, why is everyone making a big deal of them asking when their sister fucking died? Have some goddamn empathy
@shannonhill5676

I feel the same way. I can understand its how one may follow their religion but surely you can go to work ONE TIME to at least help someone out who had lost their family member. It's not going to kill you. Surely in most religions it would be a forgiven act if you are doing it out of charity and empathy. I don't know. I really didn't like how everyone else made out like the girl who had just lost her sister was in the wrong. To me, I feel that nobody really is but just felt more like the boss is to blame for creating the situation between the two.

The woman in the first story seemed so spoiled. She has a right to be disappointed that something didn’t go how she wanted it to so that’s normal, but the fact that she went and threw a big fit about it when her husband sounds like he had done so much for her! Honestly I don’t blame him for not getting stuff on his own for her, she’s ungrateful for them. It’s just flat out rude to return a gift like that. No offense but she should feel a little like crap, what she did was super annoying… like who wants to put effort/thought into getting a gift for someone just for them to complain and end up getting rid of it?! Not me

I'm sorry, but the first story. I totally fu*king sympathize with her Husband. She had a HISTORY OF REPEATEDLY returning things and I for one thinks her husband is in the right. Let's say they bought things together for that trip...Sooner or later she would return those things again. I fu*king hate women like this. 🙄😑 2nd story: this is a great one. We don’t need to tell her to divorce the guy...she's already arranging it. Yay!. 👍🏻👏🏻 3rd story: no one's in the wrong. They just had both important priority. It sucks that she can't attend the funeral. But she can't just demand someone to broke their religion's tradition/practices....cause that's just plain RUDE. 😕

And the fact that the husband offered to go with her for her to pick out what she wanted was so sweet… and she didn’t even give him the time of day. If she wanted those gifts she should have took initiative then and said “hey can we go today?” She agreed that going with him would be best and clearly he knew how she was so he wasn’t going to get a gift without her approval. Story 1 - Regardless of if I'd been given a new smartwatch and luggage, I would be over the moon with some nice wine, cheese and snuggly things. You can't underestimate the value of sharing some nice wine and cheese, while you can keep warm in your nice snuggly clothes! Be grateful, you mardy, entitled woman! He didn't have to buy you anything! And if you were going to buy the smartwatch and luggage together, maybe you should have *made time* to actually go shopping with him, like you were going to in the first place - don't blame your husband and pick your bottom lip up off the floor before someone treads on it! Story 2 - It might not have been "a big deal" to HIM - I'm so glad she left him because he absolutely is a bully and a total git! Story 3 - If OP has other co-workers then she should ask one of them. If the boss won't give her the time off I would go to see my doctor and ask to get signed off for stress, go to the funeral and use the rest of the time the doctor gave me off with the sick note to find a different job with understanding employers - hell, even the boss could have stood in for them!

She's being ungrateful complaining about a smart watch- If she can afford a trip then she can get the damn smartwatch herself. 2nd story: Dude, I mean I would've freaked out too if someone brought a lighter close up to me. I'm not sure what OP went through for her to have such trauma but I hope the best for her that she receives the help she needs and heals from her trauma. Glad she's divorcing him, thank god. 3rd story: Idk the last one confuses me, I can understand OP's concern but her co-worker idk. Can someone explain why not working on Saturdays has anything to do with religion? I'm confuzzled about that however I agree with Ellen saying OP should just ask her boss for a leave also I wonder why her job can't even find a replacement??

Because the sabbath (Saturday) is considered to be a holy and sacred day. In Bible times Jews weren’t allowed to do any form of work on Saturday. They couldn’t even brush their hair or braid it up on the sabbath because it is so holy. It was a day to rest from labor and to spend time attending to spiritual needs. But Jesus abolished that law by doing his father’s will on the sabbath and helping people. The Bible even says that “Christ is the end of the law” (romans 10:4) and that released or discharged christians from that law. Many modern day religions don’t keep that tradition anymore, or, if they are like my religion, they consider the sabbath or Saturday to be a holy day, but working on the sabbath is not prohibited or seen as a bad thing. It’s just not recommended or suggested, but we understand some people have to work on Saturday and we don’t judge them for that nor do they get in “trouble”. But I believe seven day Adventists and Judaism based religious group are prohibited from working on the sabbath.

Story 1: OP was an absolute b**** to her husband about the watch. Sure, he may have gotten her hopes up & everything, but we don't know the full story. What if he was busy with work & could only find that stuff? What if he was saving the watch for another time? There are gaps in the story that OP makes us not want to figure out based on her reaction to the entire ordeal. Story 2: Though it may seem annoying to have a partner with a phobia with fire, you don't know exactly why it was a traumatizing experience for her. She could've been tortured as a child with it, she could've been kidnapped and burned or something, her house could've caught fire. A million things coulda happened that her soon-to-be ex-husband has no idea about. If he did and still treated her this way, I'd hunt him down & shoot him. If you go into a relationship knowing this information of the phobia, you should try all you can to help her out, but not in a way that led to divorce. Story 3: As a Muslim, I understand that OP's co-worker is most likely observing the Sabbath, which means no work such as her job is allowed to take place on Saturday. I feel extremely bad for OP, however. I don't really know how this would work out. I hope we can get an update on the story, though! 😊💖

The husband who pulled out the lighter, did a lot more horrible things than that. He gave her the silent treatment for 3 days, tried to gaslight her into thinking she did something wrong, called her trauma response "antics", and wouldn't go to therapy with her. He is emotionally abusive and it's clear that it extends beyond the fire thing. No healthy person would act like that. For the last one, that person seems like they live in America because that sort of thing is so common here. That's why Kyutie is so confused. It's improving, but yes, people are still shamed for having a life and putting things like illness or grief over the blessed company and it's considered the employee's responsibility to find someone to take our shift, even if we have something unavoidable like a funeral happen. To answer your question, yes, if you get sick or get into a car accident, you are commonly required to find someone. I knew a guy who was forced to come hand deliver a doctor's note himself after he got attacked by a dog. The boss wouldn't allow him to have someone else bring the note. He came in on crutches and on pain medication to bring the note. At a different place, I got fired for having to have a knee surgery once. A different job, my boss found out that I didn't have a car and so I got demoted, even though I had never missed a shift or been late. It's wild. Fortunately, I work at a better place now and haven't had such problems.

Because one day it will come back to this co-worker. And yes the boss should have stepped up and said go ahead. I mean if she got sick and called out, who would step up? THE BOSS would have to. And again, it wasn't that she WASN'T ALLOWED it was she just wouldn't work, and IMO (NO HATE) that it's a handy excuse not work certain days.
