One of the biggest myths about the past is "people were smaller back then" when frankly, that's not true. The human body is weird, unique, and diverse. We can see this uniqueness in body shape and size when we study antique clothing, and today, we're going to examine a c. 1871 Victorian bodice and a c. 1900s Edwardian Lady's coat. Both of these garments feature waists over 29-inches (corseted) and are just two examples that show diversity in women's sizing in the Victorian and Edwardian eras. (Note: Earlier eras, like the18th-Century and Regency era, are just as diverse in size, but, unfortunately, I don't have anything earlier than the late 1820s in my personal collection...yet. 😎)
Like my unboxing videos, we're going to take a deeper dive into the construction of these antique garments (the good, the bad, and the oh-so-very-ugly), discuss how these garments were sewn, with the hope that you, as a historical costumer, cosplayer, history bounder, home sewist can take some of the information you see here and apply it to your own sewing projects!
If you are curious about knowing more about how inclusive the past was with women's sizing (featuring many extant garments and proportion charts!) Please click the link below to go and watch the presentation I did with Kenna on @Costuming_Drama's channel!
