I love the theme “not over complicating things.” I had some seeds that fell into an old bucket, I didn’t do anything to them, and they grew better than the things I’d been “babying” every day. I went out of town for a week and the garden looked beautiful when I got back even without my ‘eyes’ on them everyday. I really think I stress myself out too much over the garden🤣. Gratitude always for your knowledge and encouragement💚🪴

Gary, I just recently found- you on youtube. Absolutely enjoy your channel and all the efforts you make to share your experience- ! I'm in zone 7B- Wake Forest, NC and have grown peppers for years successfully. This year they are getting decimated by Pepper leaf disease, and that -in various forms- has spread around the garden and the yard with the high humidity- I've been applying various doses of just H2O2 and am up to 12 TBS /gal- But it seems that alone will not control the persistent leaf spot disease that is also showing up in the Kiwi, melons, etc. Mildew on the Magnolia- it seems this year an ideal climate for Fungal growths. I really enjoyed watching your scientific approach to gradually increasing dosages , waiting 24-48 hrs to "test" spot sprays, and I have applied that approach over the past 3 weeks- In my elevated Pepper bed (4' x 12" Bell peppers)- we had a 2" torrential rain last night- and a huge % of the leaves dropped off- It required a dramatic correction of this condition! I was ready to yank the plants out , but instead , I sterilized my pruners, and removed All of the leaves except for the very top new shoots and the flower buds- The disease seems to have gotten "into" the plants as well- So, I'm testing 1/2 of the bed with appling a solution of 1 -500 mg Aspirin/gallon - 5 gallons overall - soil drench on 1/2 of the peppers- Tonight, I will be spraying with a combination solution- 1 aspirin, 1 TBS baking soda, and using the 12 TBS/gallon H202 as a spray to try to eliminate this from the peppers- I will also be using this in small test areas on my other affected plants- including Hardy Kiwis and Fuzzy Kiwi- muscadine grapes, and perhaps on the melons. This is early August , hot and humid is the norm for the next month. Your detailed videos have been very instructive- With limited viewing time, I also enjoy the Millenial Gardener in Wilmington- for many of the same reasons. Enthusiasm, expertise.... I see you have some additional yard area ... You may want to consider relocating the muscadines . ? They will become aggressive in your garden space.... I haven't seen enough of your videos yet, but Have you ever considered an Orchard? I have 6 different varieties of muscadines, and it's easiest to control them and the productivity to train them on a single wire @ 6-7' and develop the main cordon, then lateral side spurs by pruning side shoots once they get 20" of growth- and -then in winter prune back all the lateral side shoots to within 8" of the main branch stem- Once a vine gets established, it can grow 20'+ in a season if not pinched/pruned back- A single wire is easiest to maintain ...Fruit- grapes are produced only on the new year's growth- develop the fruiting spurs with just 2-3 nodes - and pinch back excess growth -30" - +/- during the year to develop more fruiting spurs- Should you ever entertain the idea of an Orchard- : if you have not already...a couple of ideas... In Maryland,Zone 7 ; you may want to consider looking into growing Hardy Kiwis- grape like- and able to withstand the colder temps- versus Fuzzy Kiwis needing more temperate Climates ... This year I'm trying my 1st 3 Hardy kiwi plants -1 male, 2 females this year- and - it may take 3-4 years to get fruits- but once established , they will last for decades. Have to give them some growing room though- 50' x 6' trellis/wire system to accomodate 3 plants- An initial small investment that will potentially deliver for decades....- and,it's fun to propogate, air layer, graft,and learn new things.... Needs a male for pollination -even the Issai will be more productive- and again- training the vines to a wire - or trellis is good planning- Just a suggestion - for an expansion of your garden ....or future Orchard.... Have you ever thought about growing a Fig tree? I have several different varities - but this year added a Chicago Hardy Fig - bought as a rooting cutting /twig in spring at a local Lowes- and it has grown beyond all my expectations - and is already producing figs this 1st year- and the plant is 5' + high with multiple shoots- and is supposed to do well in colder climates.... Just suggesting- but - thank you for the very many videos I have yet to peruse as I try to become a better gardener-

It is a bad year. I have been spraying 8 ounce of h202 per gallon of water on peppers and tomatoes.The diseases is being managed but present. It is a bad year. My peppers are coming around from losing leafs over the last week. I gave all my plants more water soluble fertilizer. Yeah the muscadines were more to see how they do here and boy the do fine. If you have al this fungal trouble and went through all the organic steps, this is where a recommend a chemical spray. If you want to be 100% organic I get it, but Daconil works. Do use it on leaves you eat or cherry type tomatoes you pick and eat, or fruit that is harder to wash. It can stop the spread and problems. Otherwise you are doing what you can do. I just copied and pasted all this. Thanks for the muscadine information. I have 3 Chicago figs. They are amazing. I have about 500 figs developing. Many fruit trees. Ill be learning how to manage them this winter. Appreciated.

Your garden looks amazing! I'm growing Minnesota Midget melons (6b) for the first time and I also had a lot of male flowers. After a week or so, I discovered that the female flowers started coming on the side shoots; so many of them now! (I made the mistake earlier of pinching off the side shoots to make a stronger plant) The female flowers budded out after the heatwave we had.

My third year. Last year I overdid the “organic” pesticides. My garden was a constant battle with brown marmorated stink bugs aka squash bugs. This year I noticed tons of predatory bugs like wheel/assassin, lace wings, praying mantises etc. so I did not spray pesticides like neem for fear of hurting the “good guys”. So far The predators are winning. Lesson learned. Don’t overdo the pesticides even if they are “organic”. Maybe it is coincidental, but I am hopeful.

Whoa. Baking soda is terrible for the soil. There is an awful video going around. Baking soda is sodium. You dont want that in the soil. It is fine for an antifungal spray. But if you are mixing it in the soil, it can only harm, there is nothing in it that is good or even a fertilizer. You will need trellising for cucumbers. I only grow bush type in my tower. I have videos on growing in the towers. Not sure what they are under. Probably growing vertically. Interesting... I noticed your squash bug eggs are much larger than the ones being laid on my pumpkin vines. They are red, but so small I decided to start using tape to remove them. Yesterday I put rosemary plants in pots next to my pumpkin plants hoping the scent will repel the elusive squash bugs. Fingers crossed 🤞.

Hi Gary, thanks for your wonderful gardening channel. I wonder whether diatomaceous earth can be used as a powder to kill the crawling insects, including spider mites which are my biggest nemesis. Would you also need to spray off the Diatomaceous earth in the morning as well? I also have a serious lack of female flowers on my squash plants in particular (blue Hubbard, butternut, delicata). At the same time have an abundance of male flowers. Do you know why this is? Have used your combo of peppermint/ rosemary oils w/ azidiractin and soap. My plants seem to rebound well after spraying but seems like I need to repeat within 3-4 days. Thanks for any suggestions you have.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
DE does work. Not as well as spinosad or other insect dusts. It is worth trying first and seeing if it works on your insects. It is much slower though. You can leave the DE on. Nature is in control of the flowers. Nothing we can do. I havent added Neem to the mix but I think that would work fine since its not a lot of peppermint and rosemary oil. I've been feeding them with fish emulsion weekly like you mentioned but they are just so yellow and don't seem very healthy at all. I'm starting to wonder if its actually a water issue since the top couple inches seem very dry but the bottom layer stays moist and the container just feels heavier than I would expect.

Something is eating the leaves off my peppers, basil and sunflowers. I don't see anything on them. I do have some rust colored beetle that looks like a Japanese beetle and Japanese beetles, but I'm lost. Any idea? The leaves are being eaten almost gone. Ugh

I've planted peppers now for 2 years, and they are so tiny, then they fall off. I use fertilizer and still nothing, next year, I won't be planting peppers.

No tomatoes, many varieties, leaf curl is bad, lots of wind every night, now temps are 100+ for the next 10 days, is this a lost cause???

Not lost but you have to wait it out. I would give them some water soluble nitrogen too and they will be read for when temps break to what they like. Please subscribe if you have a chance (Thanks!) My cantaloupe was decimated! It started yellowing. I thought there was a nutrient deficiency so I added whatever. I’m sorry I don’t remember what it was I added. I noticed probably about a week later pin holes in the fruit. The meat was dripping out of the fruit. How do I organically kill whatever it was that killed my cantaloupe? Lastly, what’s causing my watermelon to yellow? As everyone is aware it’s been horribly hot-feeling like the hundreds. I have been having to water more than usual. So could the yellowing be because of over watering? I was thinking it maybe a calcium deficiency. Bees have been very very busy around the watermelon which is great. But I don’t wanna wake up to all my melons dying or dead on the vine. I’m in NC Zone 8.

You have to know what is killing it first before you can really treat effectively. If your soil drains, its not usually over watering. Id really have to see the whole process to help. I can't find any videos with the problem I'm having. I'm in Oregon, my cucumbers and zucchini are starting to flower. But unlike the usual, mine are ALL female. Over 50 cuke and 10 zukes, but all female. How can I promote male flowers? Should I pinch off all females and hope to stimulate new flowers with males?

when u see leaves with active fungas on peppers b tomatoes do u need to clip them off or just treat with h2o2? my tomatoes have not as many leaves bc i keep clipping them n i think i clipped too many. will that affect production?
@drewmow2 жыл бұрын
Remember the leaves are needed to collect sunlight. I let the plants get slightly bushy before pruning. Never cut too much from one plant at a time or it may go into shock and focus solely on repair.
