Your sunflowers are so impressive! Beautiful multiple flowers! "Maybe you're kinda beat up like your plants." 😂 Hey, I resemble that remark! I always feel that way in my garden by mid July through August. The heat takes its toll on me, but even more so is constantly fighting disease and pest pressure on the plants. Great ramble. So many good things to see! Thanks Gary!

I started my sunflowers indoors and then transplanted to an area just outside my fenced-in garden, next to the vinca (deer resistant). The next morning, all the sunflowers were gone! Only the stems were left. Poor plants didn't even have a chance to produce flowers. Now I know.

Just thank you so much for your videos. First time commenting. I’m trying so very hard to grow my food… or the majority of it. Times are hard, food is expensive. I am trying to provide for my husband and myself as well as the grown kids who call me a little nuts. Anyway… you have helped me so much. I want everything to be as good as it can… it’s a hot summer and I’m pretty drained but still implementing your advice. So far so good. Tennessee heat and humidity can be harsh this time of year. Anyway.. wanted to thank you and also say thanks from the couple orders . Came timely and the seeds are awesome. I appreciate you.

Curious why you aren’t doing anything to the tomato plant. Crazy how tall it is. Just wanted to say I bought your book and it’s so full of great information. I would suggest everyone to buy this book. Yes the internet is full of information but he really breaks it down. Nothing like having that info right there. If you want you can highlight some good areas too as your reading through it. You won’t be disappointed. Only question I asked myself was why it took me so long to buy it.

I love how you think out loud... It really helps me learn! You are a natural teacher. One question: when you notice a fungal issue or something on leaves, is it best to throw those away rather than putting them in your compost pile? I'm assuming yes, but just want to double check.
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
So I should say throw them away. But the diseases are around in the soil, on host weeds. blowing in the wind. I dont worry about it. If your doing a big pruning its good to bag them all and toss them. Otherwise, I might pinch off leaves as I see them and just leave them to dry on the ground. Thanks for reminder to burry squash stems! I'm growing 5 types. Caught and released 2 adorable & destructive ground hogs living under our shed took us a week using a large Havahart cage. They're now living 11 miles away in a beautiful, more rural, less populated location at the edge of a woods. I hope they will be happy. My garden is now safe. They were eating leaves of my squash, salad greens, chamomile, kale.

You’re lucky you didn’t lose your whole garden to the ground hogs, I did a few years ago . I caught and released 4 , but I think they had already had babies 🙄
@Earthy-Artist2 жыл бұрын
@@sharonwright66 I just wrote you a reply and it didn't post so I'm trying again. I read they can have up to 6 babies so maybe there were still more around? Babies aren't weaned off mothers milk until about 2 mos. old so relocating earlier than that could result in their deaths. They also need to be taken at least 5 mi. away or they usually find their way back. I'm sorry about your garden, & Thank you for humanely relocating the cute little guys👍! Personally for me, a clean conscience & saving furry little lives is more important than my garden. They don't bother us on purpose, they just don't have a credit card or pockets to put it in to go to the grocery store 😂.

I had 3 plants that did that. 1 had tomatoes on it. I tried to save but didn't work so I am just letting the toms ripen then will pull it .2 others never got any tomatoes on them just starting turning yellow and were over 4ft high so I pulled. .not going to waste my water, I had back ups ready to go so replaced them. It has been extremely hot..upper 90's for couple of weeks. As soon as my toms ad peppers get blossoms the heat goes to from 93 to 98 for 2 or 3 days. I just got some shade cloth will get that set up. i have 8 plants for back ups I just keep up potting them in case I lose anymore. you would just roll your eyes if you saw my trellises..but they are working!!! just took 3 bamboo poles and inserted into cloth pots and cut wire coat hangers and laddered them up for my cucumbers, fastened them on with flexible wire first time doing cucumbers they are doing so well. Using your epsom salt and fertilizer routine Thanks so much for all your videos. Couldn't do this without your help

Your garden looks beautiful! That was an interesting idea about burying the squash stems to give them access to more nutrients vs. trellising them. I don't have a problem growing winter squash, but for some reason. I only get male flowers with my attempts to grow zucchini. I wonder why that is! If you want better air circulation (and better production) from your pepper plants, try planting them 2 feet or more apart from each other so they don't need to compete for nutrients. I have one Jalapeno plant in scalding hot conditions ( in an enclosed courtyard with temperatures exceeding 120 degrees in an already hot zone 8A) mixed in with other things I'm growing, under partial shade cloth that is producing dozens of peppers ongoing which I can only attribute to the fact that it is not overcrowded and is getting light from all sides and all the rain water and natural fertilizer/compost tea it needs.
@GardeningWarrior2 жыл бұрын
DO YOU USE COMPOST TEA ON YOUR ZUKES AS WELL? I had problems with only male flowers last year until I started burying compost in the container and used worm casts tea and mulched heavily.

They were new to me when we moved to SC and after they drilled into every cucumber, melon, and squash I kind of gave up on gardening for a while. I am trying again now, not sure if maybe insect dust would be the way to go or maybe just covering those plants with insect netting?

Yeah, this weather is something else these days... The year b4 last when I was still pregnant it didn't really get cold until Christmas Day... 🙃 Then again it could have been the human heater I was carrying. Lol 😆 But I was at my garden Christmas morning putting up a greenhouse. Please don't b alarmed it was one of those pop up tent type of green house. It took more time to set up my chair, water, supplies and count out all the pieces than it did to put it together. (I planned to sit there and enjoy the view of something I built but then it started to snow as soon as it was up. SMH

I hoping for that same extra grow time... I believe I was still harvesting Green zebra tomatoes well into Nov (I think; there was a lot going on at the time but I do remember a guy walking by insisting that it was time to cut it down cause the season was over. AS I WAS STILL HARVESTING THEM...)

@Gardening Warrior Q - Thanks, I may need to add more nutrients. However, these"volunteers" are getting everything the rest of my garden is getting and they are planted directly in the soil where a raised bed used to be that six months ago, I was also using as a compost area for non animal food wastes. In prior seasons I tried growing in bags and only got male zucchini flowers. My tomatoes seem do be doing "ok" and they are supposedly "heavy feeders" . I have eggplant and basil, green onions and sweet potatoes growing and more... Maybe the compost hasn't broken down enough in this case. It seems to me it has. Who knows? (Could it be watering? I'm trying to only use rain water so it is a challenge during the droughts we've had.)

Hi Gary. Wonderful video as usual. I remember my grandfather growing huge sunflowers like yours. Just wanted to know, what is the major reason to grow sunflowers? Is it to attract pollinators? Or primarily for the edible seeds?

What is peppermint oil for? I bought 2 pepper plants (reduced) very root bound with oddly shaped dwarfed peppers on them. I cut back the brown leaves and pinched off the peppers, transplanted and the new peppers are doing the same strange growth. Suggestions?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN2 жыл бұрын
Not sure what is doing that to peppers but remove the peppers and water them in with water-soluble fertilizer. They should work it out. I use PM oil to manage spider mites. Would worm castings every 14 days work well?

Nope. Not strong enough NPK. It will help. But that is the expensive route. I like using casting to set up the plant or in containers but no ongoing.
