Thank you so much! Best video for beginners. I'm learning to play the snare drum and was looking for explanatory videos parallel to my lessons with my teacher. My target is, to play in a scottish pipe and drum band (I hope so!! Cross fingers!😊) Greatings from Germany!

Can you still do a buzz roll with left hand palm up?
@Stephen_Galvin_Musician Жыл бұрын
You say “ …I’m really trying to elongate that buzz, (5:33) then say, “…just think about lifting on the open break as well on beat two (5:40)…” If elongating the buzz how would we lift on beat two? They seem to contradict.

learning to elongate an isolated buzz creates a smooth roll once overlapped.

Do percussionist always play standing up? I play drums and I can’t imagine playing my snare standing up like that 😀🥁 A great lesson, will definitely help me with practice 🙏🏻
@lastcan1394 Жыл бұрын
Yes, percussionists play standing unless playing timpani, drum set, piano, and a few other exceptions

One question. An honest answer is welcome. What is the difference between playing quarter note untied and tied rolls? At untied, do we buzz the whole note like 1 e + a with a rrllrrll or rest at the "a" like rrllrr and rest at the "a" count?
@thatcherbuck Жыл бұрын
If it isn't tied, you should leave a small space, but it should not be as large as the "a" in a quarter note. It should be enough where it is noticable but not long

Well thank you for this very insightful and enlightening lesson! I have a question about the interaction between dynamics and subdivisions: doesn't this concept imply that if you change dynamics you have to switch between subdivisions seemlessly as well? To keep it as smooth as possible at every volume played. I imagine this is not too easy to master... 😅 Is that true? Think of the beginning of Sting's Hounds of Winter, where Vinnie plays a rather long buzz roll crescendo...well, I am really not able to hear any changes in subdivions...maybe you can shed some light on here...? Peace ✌🏼

Okay, listening very closely to this once again I am no longer sure if this is even a buzz roll or rather a double stroke roll...bad example I guess...
