After using my homemade steering system on my Perception Outlaw 11.5! I noticed some flaws with the design. The joystick was hard to control and speed hard to find the correct speed I was needing (See previous video). So I came with this new idea of steering my yak and I am loving it. I may change the parachute cord in the future for steering cable! But definitely this is the system I love to use on this setup. The speed is now control with a PWM DC motor speed control ordered from EBay and is the bomb.
The trolling motor mount was homemade and designed by myself. I can make you one if needed and I’ll give you all the information you may need to install and replicate my system. Feel free to contact me with any question you may have.

I have to say the is the best trolling motor setup I've found. I've researched the Island Hopper DIY and tried to find a Slipstream Mach 1 or 2, but had no luck. I really liked the Slipstream for its ability to be removed easily, but it's no longer in production and never could find a cost for it. I'm in the same "boat" as Domingo in that I'd love it if you could replicate the plate for my Outlaw. i don't have access to a welding machine so makes the construction more difficult. I'm in NC.

Hello I have a Crescent Litetackle 2 that I am looking to add a trolling motor on. I like your motor mount. Looks very clean, I’m curious… do you have any issues with the motor angling up out of the water when you have it on higher speeds? I was just wondering because I didn’t see any locking system for the mount to prevent tilting at the hinges when being used.
@spanglishangler
@spanglishangler 2 ай бұрын
Hello there and glad you like my setup. I was planning to add a pin/locking mechanism to avoid the lifting of the motor while going on reverse. After the water test, that was not needed. The weight proportion of the trolling motor is perfect, and no lift motion happened during the period I use this setup. Good luck with your setup my friend.

I hope you got a back once the PWM blow. I went through 2 already from Ebay. They were all rated at 60AMP. I got an line fuse installed with 60AMP also...I am running a 40lbs Minn Kota motor...I had to setup an emergency hook up straight to the motor now if the PWM blow again. Its nice to control the motor with the PWM, but most of them are junk. I would not go without an emergency setup if you are using a PWM.
@spanglishangler
@spanglishangler 3 жыл бұрын
Indeed Peter. This PWM came with a cooling fan integrated and so far is working fine. But I take my regular Minn Kota 3/5 Speed Control with me in case I had any issues. But now I am mounting a 2.5hp Yamaha 4 cycle and definitly no issues with PWM blowing out :-). I am posting some videos of the Yamaha on my Outlaw but runign behind with the seatrial deu to the holidays, cold weather and family in town. Should be able to take it on the water this coming weekend.

@DirtyCoastYakFishing 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I’ve gone thru three and two were in the same day with some really rough 2ft chop on the bay I was crossing. Heat and load management kills them. Try running a cooling inside your box. A simple CPU fan for computers. Or vent your box. But a quick disconnect set up for easy plug and play in the event you have to go to your back up while on the water.

Nice setup. I have the same kayak. What size battery (amp hour) are you using, and how much runtime are you getting out of it? I'm considering going with a Minn-Kota Endura Max and lithium battery, but that setup will cost more than the kayak. What would you do differently if you could start over? Thanks for the video.
@spanglishangler
@spanglishangler 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Robert. Great kayak in my opinion. Are you enjoying yours as much? I am using an Autocraft Deep Cycle Marine battery (Advance Auto Parts carry them). Part # 24DC-1 with Cold Cracking at 550amps and Reserve Capacity of 140. This battery should last me 2 hours and 30 minutes of constant use. But I been out for 2 to 3 miles trolling and the battery still have 75% of power. I love the battery for the price and what you get. I can by 3 of this for the price of one of the Lithium! but definitely if weight is a problem then Lithium is the way to go. This one weights about 46lb. Not a problem for me at this time and the kayak love and can keep up with the extra weight. What would I do differently if I could start over? Maybe not be so afraid to install the plate and guides and cut the floor for the space of the hatch, nerve wracking lol. Trust yourself, is only plastic,, no need to lose sleep over it :-). Also if you see my previous video I had another system (joystick style). That was a waste of time! but at the same time! that needed to happen, for me to be able to come with a better solution like is this now. Tight lines

Just wondering if I used a similar bracket without the hinges if the tip of the trolling motor would miss the back of the kayak if the trolling motor just raised up and down? I love the joystick idea but would prefer the trolling motor to have some depth adjustment to it while out on the water.
@spanglishangler
@spanglishangler 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure exactly what you mean by not having the hinges. Do you mean a solid piece extending pass the kayak? If so, you can control how high the motor can go by installing a bottom C clamp on the bottom of the trolling motor shaft to the max ditance you want to raise. Thanks for watching and the comment and hope I was able to help.

Okay, just thinking out loud here as I steal your joystick concept for my canoe 😀 Get the proper size copper pipe hanger, so you can attach it to your seat leg without damaging it. Add an eyebolt vertically. Through the eye bolt past the axle of a front hub assembly off a bicycle rim. ( Junk yards are full of them) Using the nut system already on the axle and some washers should keep it secure horizontally. Attached your steering cables to the holes where the spokes went.( I'd find something that would clip into the holes) as you'll most likely need to pack the bearings occasionally. Either fabricate or purchase one of those hand grinder wrenches used to tighten and remove the grinding wheel. May have to grind the prongs. Figure out proper placement to the outside hub section, drill proper holes that allow you to also mount it to the spoke area with nuts and bolts. You now have an easy L&R joystick. Now the fun part. Disassemble and dip all exposed parts in liquid rubber, pack the bearings and reassemble. Again just thinking out loud for my canoe, but see a fix for your kayak as well. Maybe. 😀

Thanks brother. Sounds great! But back in school I remember a professor telling us, the more components or parts any system haves! The greater the chances that something will go wrong. But I would like you to work on it and make it happen. Sounds like a great idea. I am now rocking a Yamaha 2.5hp outboard on my Outlaw and no need for this steering system at this time. Send some pics if you ever make this work on your canoe. Good luck and thanks for the comment and watching my friend.

does the motor kick up when in reverse? How is the steering arm with room between the legs? How do you lift the motor if you get shallow? Sorry for all the questions but I really like the way you designed this system and would like to know if I ever copied it!
@spanglishangler
@spanglishangler 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Sparkie. The motor will slightly tilt for a second when put on reverse but not enough to cause any issues with the performance. I was going to put a face bolt similar to this (s3.amazonaws.com/harneyshopifypds/34816.pdf) but was no need after all. I have it! but no need to install it in my personal opinion and how I use my yak. The steering joystick is not on the way. I was even thinking to make it longer or have a longer piece that I can put on and off to make it easy to steer while I am standing up especially when throwing the cast net. The motor is lift with the rope attached to the back plate. I just literally turn around and pull on the rope. This kayak is so stable that sometimes I put my kneens on the seat and bend backwards to pull the plate up with the rope. Hpe that was helpful.

Just finished 2 sets today, one going to Alaska and the other one Pennsylvania. I use ¼” aluminum with stainless steel fasteners. Is the best for the environment I fish (salt water) and the plate is strong but light at the same time. This is a hobby for me. So I priced it correctly to cover for the material and just a bit extra for my time. Send me an email to crosa1974@gmail (.com). KZbin is funny with pricing and stuff on their platform. Hello Domingo. I can make a replica of this plate for about $100. This is not my line of work! but wont mind to help someone else with this project. Plus I don't want to come like I am selling this. But definitely want to cover for the material. All you will need is to buy couple SS hinges and 3 bolts, washers and nuts to install the plate. Where do you live? I am in Wesley Chapel/Land O' Lakes area (Florida).
