It annoys me what they did to my baby boy Grover. Like in the book he’s an extremely sensitive and nervous kid who hates himself for “letting” Thalia die. It takes him the entire series and a full arc to come into his own and become a leader. Hes so loving and he’s so devoted to his friends that he helps out despite his fear and anxiety, and he’s such a good representation of a genuinely sweet and empathetic guy But in the movies he’s just. Smooth confident funny guy. Also he’s meant to be the one who wears the flying converse because Percy isn’t allowed to fly!! Zeus hates him!! He would get killed if he flew, and it’s a big reason why Kronos isn’t revived in the first book. They just completely took everything away from him I hate it
@cindertherabbit5 ай бұрын
It feels like there was a LOT of unrecognized racism in their rewriting of Grover. In the movie he hits a lot of anti-black stereotypes by having his character be boiled down to just "horny". Either the screenwriters wanted grover to be cooler and more sexually charged to appeal to an older audience and they decided a black man would play that character best, or they wanted a black best friend character and redesigned him to be "more black" 🤢 Either way it's racist and gross
@tyler-df3wy5 ай бұрын
@@cindertherabbit literally, like casting a black guy to play Grover could have been amazing if they kept his original characterisation. Young black boy characters that are super in touch with their emotions and openly adore their friends are super rare, particularly in white-centred media. But instead of making him a genuinely sweet, caring, and anxious complicated character, they made him a racist caricature. Which is especially infuriating coz Grover is absolutely one of the best characters in PJO and they took away everything that made him so good

the whole absent parents thing is literally one of the main themes of the book series like the gods being shitty parents is why almost everything happens and the movie was just like… nah
@hobbes65577 ай бұрын
Exactly! Hermes being absent in Luke's life is literally the core reason as to why Kronos was able to target him so easily. If Hermes had been around Luke's mom probably never would've tried to become the oracle and go insane, he would be raised by two loving and attentive parents, know he's a demigod and how to defend himself, not run away from home at 9 and be alone for 3 year before meeting 2 other traumatized runaways and almost dying dozens of times, not have resented the gods nearly as much, and overall have been a happy kid while some other poor child was targeted by Kronos because the gods suck as parents. The movies really said none of that's important though and left it all out along with any other important information, scenes and plot points like oh I don't know ARES?! Ares was such a big part of the books and the movies just cut him out completely and replaced him with the most unimportant stuff!

The movies were good and faithful adaptations. God so many things you mention being wrong with this movie are directly addressed in the books... An example I haven't seen mentioned yet, is the exposition about camp half blood. In the book, Percy **does** know a bunch about Greek mythology, because his mom told him a lot of the stories. But 1. he's a kid with ADHD and doesn't always remember names or details and 2. Many aspects of the myths are different from the reality of the books, or have changed in the thousands of years since they were originally written down. Because of those things, he ends up getting corrected a bunch. So like, grover will say "here's x" and Percy will say something in the ballpark but not quite, to which Grover will then explain the full thing. This is great both because it feels more naturalistic, but also because it establishes things about the characters. We learn that Percy isn't stupid, and that Sally made an effort to teach him things she knew he would need to know. But also, we learn that he's kind of cocky, and makes assumptions. These are minor details, but it's things like them that build up to a more enjoyable experience in the end. Sorry about the ramble, I just love the books too much.

Actually, yes, if I remember the books correctly (I also haven't read them in a while, so I'm probably forgetting something), Luke was much more defined by his daddy issues. And also by mommy issues, but I won't comment on it too much because spoilers. In fact, I remember at the end of the series, the gods were called out for being bad parents and for indirectly causing a lot of the problems of the series.

Annoying little correction from a Nashville native- there's a Parthenon replica, not Pantheon. The Pantheon is (deceptively) actually in Italy. The Parthenon is the ancient Greek temple in Athens. Nashville was nicknamed "the Athens of the South" so for its centennial celebration, they built a full-scale replica of the original Parthenon. Kind of insane actually. The life-size replica of the Athena statue inside scared the shit out of me as a kid bc it's just a massive gold woman.

I love how Carley can’t tell Michelle Williams and Carey Mulligan apart, and she looks exactly like them 😂 I couldn’t tell if that was a bit or not when those photos went up haha!

I have to watch this - how tf do they have Sean Bean, Owen from Greys and Uma Thurman in this universally mocked movie?

In the book, I'm pretty sure Annabeth lived with her dad. The reason Poseidon couldn't know Percy is because there was an agreement between the "big three" gods, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, that they COULD NOT have mortal children because they always turned out too powerful and did too much wild stuff on earth. Poseidon broke the rule and tried to hide it for as long as possible. Percy didn't know who his parent was for a good portion of the book

The amount of times the sentence "I love water" was pronounced in your video was high enough that it brought up a Jean Claude Van Damme meme that I now can't get out of my head, so, in conclusion, great video thank you so much!!! (seriously I'm dying laughing in my bed instead of sleeping)

Luke is one of the best characters in the books and I still can’t believe how hard they fumbled him in this one, it was rough but even the show did his character way better

its so funny cause when youre like "seeing some aspect of this would have been more interesting" cause its in the books 😭 the kids having absent parents is the point of the whole book series lmao

What i always find funny about western versions of greek mythology is they always make Hades evil though in actual greek mythology Hades is a very stoic/chill guy and the other gods are crazy.

girl if you thought online discourse was bad when annabeth had brown hair, I cannot EXPLAIN to you how insane it was when she was cast as a black girl for the show. it was BAD

this is a good example of "if the adaptation has good ideas but doesn't execute them well, check out the source material" i know i'm preaching to the choir and you said you read them but the way you talked about the good ideas executed poorly made me think of that

I love the enthusiasm you have when you talk about plots. i dont watch these types of videos from any other creator, but you do a really good job summarizing and explaining while making it entertaining and also showing your love for literature!

as someone who grew up on the Percy Jackson books and only watched like half of the first movie many years ago in school, so I didn't really know what happened in the movie until now this is so hard to watch and hear how not a single detail in this movie is accurate. like I don't think I've ever stopped a video in the middle so many times before.

I confused Logan Lerman with Aaron Taylor Johnson for a while, when he was younger during Kickass years. Logan was like a softened version of Aaron to me.

Ooooooh the aging up in the movie made me SO MAD like the whole arc of the series hinged on the prophecy that would come true when Percy turned 16… and in the movies he’s casually driving and so presumably already 16. And for what!!!
