I think what they need to nail is the vibe, the films suffer from being turned from a really creative series to something that feels like generic middle school fiction chosen one and all. It’s okay for it to be a little silly, it’s okay to use bright colors and honestly doing something a bit Tom Holland Spider-Man like would fit the series really well in my opinion. I can totally picture slow motion battles with sarcastic Percy commentary and punk and pop music during some scenes.

The worst part of this movie as a fan of the books is how it basically just stole the climax of the 4th book, crammed it into this film, and then quickly resolved it. That would be like if Marvel put Thanos in Avengers 2, only gave him 10 minutes tops of screentime, then killed him off forever.

The thing is that the second book isn't as good individually, but Percy Jackson really is a series where the sum of their parts is greater than any individual book. The books are really good, but the first two books really do a great job of building up to the final three (same with the Heroes of Olympus), which I why I would've recommended reading all of them before watching the second one, because it'll leave you wondering where they were trying to go after the second movie. Also books 5, 4, and 3 are probably the best written books of the series (in the order)

@@x0xgregx0x Yes this exactly! The way the characters are all dismissed off the bat by being just "Rick Riordan" characters and how they're far too simple to get wrong even though the movie was doing just that made me a little sad to hear. I absolutely adored these books growing up and recently re-read all of them alongside my sister, who at this point is pursuing grad school. We both thoroughly enjoyed going through the series again and re-experiencing our love for it. They might not be all that complex in the beginning, but captainmidnight even admits that the characters in the movies are wayyy too aged up and the ones in the books are still very, very young teenagers. Take Harry Potter for example here, the protags are young in both book and movie and they make childish descicions because they're, well, children and that's to be expected but they're not blamed for being children or chalked up to being inherently incomplex characters just because they're written like teenagers. And they do become more complex over time as both they and the audience that read/watched them grew up. It just seems unfair that these "Rick Riordan" characters are given such treatement because I remember and love the books so fondly; to hear them dismissed so completely in passing like that... hurts.

At some points it seemed like they were expecting to get a sequel even though they used crucial plot points from the books that weren’t even close to coming to fruition yet and sometimes it seemed like they knew that the franchise wouldn’t continue by speeding up those plot points to bring the short lived franchise to an end with a neat little bow on top EVEN THOUGH they left it open for continuation. If they actually got the green light for another movie where would they have even taken the source material? They already used up and butchered major plots. The thing with Tyson is that, size-aside, he's a very young kid, like a six year old. Which might translate weirdly, especially with the even older actors. The books switch out Percy's sidekicks repeatedly, just to switch it up. So Tyson took over for Grover in Book 2, and Thalia took over for Annabeth in 3. Just kind of a change of pace. (Though in Book 3, it was more effective, since Percy's feelings about Annabeth's capture are a major part of the plot, and Riordan does the almost impossible and makes this relationship actually feel real.) Beating Kronos in book 2 when he's the final boss was also a super weird choice.

Well I personally loved the second book, it was my favorite❤️I loved the chapter where Percey got turned into Guinea pig and Grover had to buy time with the wedding dress, and the joke that every time they cut off the head of the monster(I think it was the hydra) it would open a new donut shop as part of a fast food chain. It really was in my opinion the best in every way. Im going to reread it now.

I remember being in third grade having read all of the Percy Jackson books released at the time and being super excited for the movie. I remember reading the second book all in one day because I loved the first one so much. Needless to say, as a cynical nine year old, I vowed to never watch another Percy Jackson film because I was baffled by how awful the first one was. But they never made a second one (thank god). Fast forward to right now when I am finding out that they made a second movie. Wow. I was SUCH a big fan of this series as a child and I had no idea there was a sequel movie for almost a DECADE! Still sticking to that vow, by the way

We read the lighting theft in 5th grade. That teacher is sole reason for my love of books. He introduced us the Lightning thief and “the witch, the lion, and the wardrobe.” Both books i enjoyed. Even finished the percy Jackson series later on as well as the sequel hero of Olympus.

@@coopercurtis8502 for Narnia i have seen “the witch, the lion, and the wardrobe” movie and liked it. Saw the prince capsian one twice, but don’t remember anything about it. Did see Lightning thief movie, but really didn’t like it. Felt like they were mixing other books into for no reason and really hated how much of a bad guy they made Hades. He got the short stick in all kinds of things. Didn’t know sequel was made for this either. Really enjoyed Rick Rodian’s books. Might have continued reading more of them, but books can be expensive to buy, although i have seen some at libraries. During elementary and middle school they still had the scholastic book fair where you could buy entire series for like 25 dollars. Otherwise, its like 15 dollars per book at a book store.

In your last video on the Percy Jackson movies, I made a comment recommending CIRCE only for someone else to say the book was trash. All that to say I feel delighted to see you praise it and recommend it! Thank you for the coverage of both the movies and the original book series. I think your insight on the adaptive nature of the original series couldn't be more true, and looking in retrospect is likely the source of a lot of fans' frustration regarding how the movies adapted the novels.

Honestly, the second book is probably the weakest. It just doesn’t feel that important to the overall story. It did something really well (like Clarise and Annabeth) and I feel like it separated itself from the Harry Potter knock-off category. But besides Thalia coming back nothing feels really important in this book. I also feel a lot of people dropped the series after book two or just saw the series as incredibly kiddy afterwards. Which is a real shame as books 3, 4, 5 in my opinion are really well written and actually really dark (definitely better than books 1 and 2) However, I want to ask anyone who feels this is a more for kids series than others like Harry Potter why do you feel that way. I never got it. Is it the writing style, length, the jokes. Remember the first book ends with Percy’s mom basically killing his stepfather and selling him off as an art project.
@august18373 жыл бұрын
I also want to know the answer to this. The reasons Ive heard are the jokes, the whimsy, and honestly I really don’t feel that Percy Jackson is anywhere near as whimsical as Harry Potter, especially when comparing the first book of each series. I mean, Percy wanted nothing to do with camp half blood in the beginning, but Hogwarts was painted as the best place on earth. Not criticizing. I just don’t get the whole it’s so whimsical comment. And i guess most adults, especially those who mostly read adult novels get way too critical, which prevents them from enjoying the good stuff in the books
@bethanybrookes84792 жыл бұрын
I think the only reason I have heard is maybe the jokes and humour. Harry Potter is a lot more serious in tone, mainly coz it isn't told fron the perspective of a sarcastic teenager. But then, I gave also seen people site the humour and tone as a reason why percy jackson endures beyond Harry Potter. I guess it cones down to personal preference. Some people are drained by the seriousness in Harry Potter if they read I as an adult, others really can't stand sarcastic teenagers who don't seem to take things seriously at first. I personally find Harry Potter really draining to read, and enjoy the balance of the serious and the humour that percy jackson pulls off.

The main reason the fans were so upset at Annabeth not being blonde and Percy not having # sea green eyes was because those were traits mentioned all the time in the books. They're the most simple traits of the characters, and the moment they introduced Annabeth in the movie, I laughed. That's what guaranteed the movie to be bad; they had never even read the first book.

Sea of Monsters is my least favorite in this series so I get where you're coming from. But you need to read the other 3 to get why the fans were really upset and infuriated. The directors and producers didn't understand that an adaptation can't be good with just a bare plot and some action scenes when the book had nuanced characters and incredible world-building.

@knightbot40523 жыл бұрын
I think the thing that hurt way more in the second one is that the first act of the film is actually pretty spot on in terms of story beats and mild ret-conning of the first film. Even though it's lame, when they changed Annabeth's hair color I remember thinking "wait did they actually listen to us?!" But then the film only takes a nose dive from there. The first act course correction only made the choice to cram the OTHER THREE BOOKS INTO THE END feel even worse.

This is my first comment ever and it's because you really gotta read the whole series to understand why this movie was the worst. I really recommend reading it all and then making another video because you will be shocked at how much character development and emotional impact they lost. They literally took every major point from the 2nd, 4th and 5th book and bunched it up together in the climax but made it a joke. I love your videos so I'd love to see an updated version after you read all the books!
