The one thing that annoys me the most is probably just how badly they ruined the progression of Percy and Annabeth's relationship. Like I read these books growing up and it was so fun to see this sort of young schoolyard antagonism morph into reluctant friendship and then so much love and admiration for each other before they were even together. It was so sweet how they grew on each other at the same time that they were growing on you as the reader. That would never work in those dumb movies because they aren't kids and they both have the personalities of wet cardboard.

One thing is at the beginning when Grover's like "Oh Percy you did all these great things!" He mentions Ares's chariot and the Bronze Dragon among other things and Percy says no those were all done by Clarisse. The problem is *Percy did do those things* they were short stories that Riordan had written. Ares's chariot was a question that Clarisse and Percy got together. Then the Bronze Dragon is a quest that Percy, Annabeth, Silena and Beckendorf went on. The filmmakers probably just got a list of random Greek quests and didn't know about these things but still it feels like a sit in the face. Also an annoying thing about the two movies is how different the camps are from movie to movie. In the first one they're very war like and well trained. That would be a problem if they theoretically were going to the Hero of Olympus series and it's a little less fun than it is in the books. In the second movie for no reason the camp is barely a step above a regular summer camp. I'm amazed that the gods don't fire Chiron for what a shit job he's doing with training these kids. Riordan did such a good jump at making CHB a place where it's a fun and interesting setting but also "realistically" trains these kids to survive the outside world. The first one was a little closer to the books but they both weren't perfect.
@thatcrazynerdgirlproductio44817 жыл бұрын
Taylor Ramirez I agree about how they did the camp. While the first movie certainly looked the part, it didn't feel like Camp Half-Blood. When I imagine the book camp, I imagine the Stoll brothers pickpocketing someone, the Ares kids and/or Clarisse yelling at someone, and dryads playing games with satyrs in the forest. When I think of the movie camp, I can't think of anything because they never really gave us time to appreciate the camp before the heroes were moving along with the plot. You don't remember any of the campers other than Luke, Annabeth, and Clarisse because we didn't really get to see the actual atmosphere of the camp.

Yes! I'm a big fan of the Percy Jackson books, and of course, I hate the movies. I know this might be a little too much, but you should consider reading the Heroes of Olympus series. When I first heard about it, I was being an idiot and thought that the Heroes of Olympus books were just Rick Riordan running out of ideas and trying to make a series exactly like Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I decided to read it and give it a go. Its actually amazing, and a continuation of Percy Jackson. Not gonna spoil though. It's basically about a new generation of demigods in Camp Half Blood, and them fulfilling the prophecy that Rachel spoke at the end of The Last Olympian. Percy is in it, and a very important character, however there is new heroes as well.

The continuity is ruined across the Heros of Olympus series as well. I'll copy/paste my comment from your Sea of Monsters review: By not going to Cires island (the lady who turned guys into guinea pigs), they gave Reyna no reason to be at camp Jupiter, meaning that she wouldn't be able to: deliver the Athena Parthenos, delay the attack on Camp Half Blood, indirectly introduce Arion into the story and kill Orion (I could keep going, but we'd be here awhile). However, the writers of these movies have messed up so much of original plot, that this is the least of their worries Also, in the opening scene, the cyclopes throw Thalia behind them which means that the cyclopes are inside of the barrier when it is created, giving them free access to Grover, Luke and Annabeth. However, the next shot shows Grover, Luke and Annabeth standing what looks like 5 feet from the shield

The thing about these movies that pisses me off the most is their misunderstanding and non-inclusion of the philosophical conflict of the book series. The overall themes of the book series consist of family, friendship, loyalty, and tragedy. And these essentially create the philosophical conflict of whether or not the gods are worth supporting. The gods are known to be forgetful and ignorant towards their children, hence the Hermes cabin being so crammed. And this is what led to so many Half-Bloods joining Kronos, because they felt insignificant and unloved. And there's the whole Great Prophecy thing. How many times have the gods outwardly stated their concerns about allowing Percy and Thalia to live and also their desire to kill them to prevent the prophecy from coming true? Hell, in the 5th book, we get a flashback scene where Zeus blew a building full of innocent people to kingdom come just to kill 2 children (who were not even pre-teens at the time) in an effort to save his own skin! But part of what made that argument valid on their part was that both Percy and Thalia have shown signs of being manipulated into Kronos's traps. Percy's fatal flaw is he doesn't really know when to cut his losses, as he's always trying to save his friends at the risk of sacrificing the world. And Thalia, being a daughter of Zeus, has this sort of superiority complex. She's been tempted once or twice with the promise of power when they find out about how the Ophiotaurus factors into the destruction of Olympus. And there's that little tidbit that the gods often know the fate of their children, thanks to the Oracle of Delphi. And while they have good reason not to divulge that info to their children (as they have a tendency to wanting to change their fate which usually ends up making things worse), it still makes sense how that would alienate anyone. In _The Battle of the Labyrinth,_ when Percy and Calypso are talking on how she was sentenced to imprisonment on her island because she supported her father Atlas in the first Titan war, she asks Percy a very thought-provoking question. _"Do you support the Olympians because you like the way they run things or because they're your family?"_ Having the gods be these beings who are forbidden by Zeus to see their children just feels like a betrayal to what made the books so engaging!

other than the missing prophecies from each book, the bead necklace, monster doughnuts, each of the characters backstory (grover and pan along with annabeth reconnecting with her father (since that becomes big in the next book)), also if the mist is a spray that also messes with stuff that happens in the heroes of Olympus (has a big deal the house of hades, won't spoil it for you) also this comes back to it ruins everything about the Riordanverse (percy jackson and the olympians, heroes of olympus, trials of apollo, karter kane trilogy and the magnus chase and the gods of asgard) there is way more ruined plot continuity counters than 12....more like 1200.

@OptimusPhillip4 жыл бұрын
You can say the same thing about Chris Rodriguez as Silena and Ethan. In Battle of the Labyrinth, it's revealed that Chris and Clarisse were close friends before he turned to Luke. After Chris is found in the Labyrinth, driven almost completely insane, Clarisse is inconsolable and refuses to go into the Labyrinth. This ties in with the Silena arc as well, because after Chris recovers, Silena helps Clarisse to become Chris's girlfriend, and Clarisse becomes a super-protective friend to Silena, which makes her betrayal and sacrifice in the final book all the more tragic. It's especially insulting considering how large of a role Clarisse has in this story.

Some notes: Luke was 13 or (more likely) 14 when he meets Hermes. Thalia was 12. Annabeth was 7. It is Pollux who Dionysus requests safety for.

Man, I've been with this series since The Lightning Thief and even I never noticed most of these. Did they even TALK with Riordan during the production of this movie?
@bul13ts7 жыл бұрын
Not really. He signed away the movie rights early on in the books distribution to get the sales boost that comes with a "Now a Major Motion Picture!" stamp. I don't blame him. It's probably part of what launched this series into the public eye, and without the early boost that deal gave him, I doubt the series would be as well known today. It's just such a pity the movies turned out to be shit.

In addition to the dumb change with riptide not having a cap: in the Heroes of Olympus series (the sequel to pjo), it comes into play that if you touch the cap to the hilt of riptide, it turns back into a pen and you can write with it (and I believe the ink has some magical properties)
@SebasTian583236 жыл бұрын
Initially Annabeth did live at camp all year, but afterwards she improves her relationship with her father and goes back to living with him, initially it doesn't work out but I think they have a better relationship by the end of the first series. Thalia aged slower in tree form so that she's younger than what she's supposed to be but not as young as she was when she was turned into the tree. Apollo figures out what her current age is. They didn't think she was still there, so why would they try to heal a perfectly healthy tree? As for the clothes and stuff, I'm guessing that magic had something to do with that. Granted she wasn't physically there until the Fleece undid the damage and transformation in the book, but the movie doesn't really care. A God's true form is deadly to most mortals and demigods, and it's implied that a Titan's true form would be about as strong or stronger, so Percy and the rest would be vaporized if Kronos' true form were to be revealed
@samuelbarber61774 жыл бұрын
In the Lightning Thief movie, Poseidon says in the opening scene: "Zeus... It's been many years." You meet twice a year, what the hell are you talking about? Also, in the book the Fury is hiding out as the Maths, not the English teacher. The reason I care, is the actual first chapter, the first thing you read in the book is: "I accidentally vaporised my Pre-Algebra teacher", this can only be a "F*ck you, Riordan" message right out of the gate.

The fact that riptide was a capped pen may seem like a small detail that can easily be thrown aside, but it plays a somewhat big role in House of Hades, later on in the series, in a way it literally helped Percy and Annabeth in Tartarus. The cap, when placed on the other end instead of discarding it like Percy normally does, turns it into a real, functional pen, allowing percy to write a note with it. Love the way Riordan incorporates small details into his writing, something the movie definitely doesn't care about

I like the cat at the end. And Percy never lived every day with his mom. He lived with her during winter and summer vacation, untill the end of the first book, when Gabe is dead, and she moved. He joins camp half-blood for summer vacation, and lives with his mom full-time because he doesn't have boarding school anymore anytime eles. That is how it is after the first book.

Also Krim, for Thalia in the tree, she was not in the ground she was the tree. The Fleece just healed the tree and saw Thalia's humanity as foreign so it expelled it but since it healed her before it she lived. If it had expelled all toxins or foreign traces at once shw would have died. At least from what I understood of it .

Well in the first book it's established that an outsider needs permission to enter the camp and the Minotaur disapperates Percy's mother just like in the film. But my problem is in there Grover was knocked out and was unable to help Percy. In the film though Grover is conscious and while he may not have been able to say the phrase in time he could've tried. Now while the Sayters are technically not campers I don't recall any details preventing Grover from giving permission to enter the camp. Also Percy finding out Possieden is his father. In the book after fighting Clarrise in capture the flag and forming a rivalry with her(also why wasn't Clarrise in the film). Any who after the game Percy is chose(I forget the exact word) by Poseidon and finds out he's the son of Poseidon. Everyone bows and Percy doesn't want the royalty treatment. In the film however he's a typical half blood, and it's not treated with the weight it was in the book. Also they got Hades wrong. True Hades captured Percy's mother, but he didn't want the Lightning Bolt and wanted his charm. He didn't want a war to happen between his brothers and honestly was a more chill type of God than the villain he's otten portrayed as. This helps because we find out in book 3 he did have children and in book 5 how much he really loved his children.

Slight correction: Thalia was 12 when she was turned into a tree. She's 14 or 15 when she's revived six years later, though, because she continued to age at the rate of a tree.

A small detail i just remembered and it's so nit-picky but Camp Half-Blood's thing is supposed to be a summer camp that's funded by a strawberry farm as its mortal front, as a fun riff on the fact that Dionysus can't drink wine and can't even grow his own grapes, so strawberries Where the fuck were the strawberries in the movies?

after i watched the first Percy Jackson movie I was really upset on how bad it is and the books are so good they don't even need movies about them, but if some one still wanted on the TV at home then it should have been an animated series. what makes that though so much worse is that the way the book is structured it would have been a perfect animated series think about is each book is one season and each chapter is an episode. even the way Rick Riordan named the chapters you wouldn't even need to think about funny names four the episodes but sadly no, Hollywood needed a few extra bucks.

I was really pissed that the cut the whole scene where Percy and his mum go away to the beach in the first book. It's a really minor thing, but that whole interaction was so beautiful and wholesome and really increased the impact of her death soon after.

Don't forget that in the book Tyson was able to hear other people across another room and mimic their voices before Percy and the others were caught. And him giving inspiring words to his biggest fan, I believe it was another mythological cyclops. I haven't read the book in years, so not many of the scenes that you listed I vaguely remember. I did enjoy the Party ponies and when the centaur who worked in the camp was kicked out.

With the whole Thalia thing, this is what happened. She was about 12 when she was turned into a tree and as we can see later she did not die. In the years following that incident she kept aging but much more slowly than she should have normally . As a result when she was was purged from the tree she should have been in her late teens but she still felt like she was 12 and if u looked her she seemed to be somewhere in between and it was concluded in the Titan's Curse by apollo that she was 15. Hope this helped somehow :)

Let's not forget a couple of things... 1) Luke and Annabeth are shown to know each other in Sea of Monsters, making their lack of interaction in Lightning Thief even worse. 2) Why did Luke have Percy and Crew find those pearls if he didn't want them to escape the Underworld? In the book it is Poseidon who gives the pearls because he doesn't want Percy to die... That would be the same as if Ares gave them the pearls and acted shocked when they lived.

In the book, Thalia is 12 at the time she dies, is turned into a tree and ages at about half the rate, and so when she is revived 7 years later, she is 15. By the 3rd book, her 16th birthday (which is very important to the prophecy) is only weeks away.

15:30 I feel like everything falls on Luke anyway. No matter what kind of problems you have, you don't ally yourself with an ancient Titan who wants to take over the world, possibly killing thousands if not millions in the process, nor do you (like the first movies suggests) cause a war that will annihilate Earth as we know it. At some point in your life you need to take responsability and ownership of your actions and choices. No matter if you had a lousy father, were an orphan, were abused or any other possible traumatic experience you might have had, you don't get a "get out of jail free card" because of that.
