@TheModernMartialArtist4 ай бұрын
So whenever someone in MMA shoulder rolls I am screaming at the screen to punish them with a leg kick since they need to turn their leg and expose it to roll. I think that may be why Pereira turns with rear leg kicks rather than checks a lot of the time, which just goes to show what a well thought out system he has.
@mackenziechin36674 ай бұрын
exactly. his left hook is his most effective and devastating weapon but people tend to overlook the rest of his arsenal
@JDascrambler4 ай бұрын
The fear of his lefthook opens up all his other options. And he knows it then uses it to his advantage.
@worldview62184 ай бұрын
Yeah I think he had a lot of detractors who basically just called him a boxer with a big left hook, but I think especially in his ufc run even as terrifying as his left hook is, his arsenal has really evolved to suit him perfectly. I mean he had a low kick in glory as well, but Jesus Christ his low kicks in the ufc are to me as terrifying as his left hook, because absolutely none of these guys see it coming, and usually he’s got them compromised inside the first round, and can set up big finishing shots off of that. In his debut he finished the guy with a switch knee as well, and despite the left hook still being his signature move, in his last title defense against jiri after he dropped him and hurt him a couple times with the left hook and chewed his leg up, he came out at the start of the 2nd with a switch kick up top that finished him so yeah, you would think these guys in the ufc would figure out by now that they cannot stand with this man but apparently they haven’t
@TheSonnyGo4 ай бұрын
I think he's really good at punishing bad habits. Also, he has the perfect build for throwing the left hook without needing to gazelle step, much like Tommy Morrison.
@TheModernMartialArtist4 ай бұрын
Definitely bad habits, but also just habits. If he knows what you're going to do he can punish it. In contrast he's very varied in his strikes. When he wants to land something in particular he'll throw it in once every five moves or so, great discipline.

Never strike up a conversation with Poatan..., He'll counter your point (with a left check hook).
@juliahenriques2104 ай бұрын
Machida always says Poatan is a cerebral fighter with great rational understanding and a no nonsense approach to fighting, which makes me wonder how he'll fare against Jones. The single thing I don't love about his style is his reliance on his chin. He's tough, but he's no Hagler, and snipers like Izzy, who's not afraid to trade, can and have put him down. Izzy's last KO against Poatan was a lucky shot, but luck favours the prepared, and it would have been even more unlikely if Poatan defended in a way that blocked more shots. I hope he can still fix this, as he just keeps getting better. Also, I love how Poatan kinda means "hands of stone". Duran would approve.

@@benihanma9429. No it was 100% lucky and if Izzy didn’t land that shot it was headed towards 4-0 Poatan because Izzy’s legs we’re FK’d and Poatan was on the hunt when the lucky shot landed. The guard he uses with low hands and arms extended reminds me of foreman or Klitschko. Id say he uses it closer to Klitschko than foreman because i havent seen him use hand traps the way foreman did. he does use it to maintain distance. Ive noticed that sean strickland has started to use that guard and long guard tactics, (especially in sparring footage) but he uses it more frames, hand traps,etc then pereira. Maybe he was influenced by sparring and training with alex? or maybe he came up with it on his own.
@AxleTrade4 ай бұрын
Strickland started training with Alex after he lost to him, iirc. There’s a lot of footage of them in the gym where Poatan was demonstrating and explaining to Sean how to improve on his style. Alex himself said Strickland had the tools to beat Izzy but people just laughed at him back then. Then it happened lol.

I can't remember who it was, but some famous athlete was saying how they imagine every possible way something could go wrong and then play out a solution in their head.
