Fantastic vid. Can't wait to see this rye pop. Neighbours will be jealous! Is there a temp/humidity threshold that rye won't tolerate? Brisbane climate probably not ideal for rye and from memory our couch was still looking pretty good through winter last year so I'll see how our wintergreen and Qld Blue goes now that I've got a handle on it. I love the champion fertilizer. Definitely noticed a surge in growth and a really strong green up when I got the first application down.
@theaussielawn2 жыл бұрын
I think Brisbane is the absolute limits anything further north you just dont get cold enough to be worth it Yeah couch would grow all year round up there albeit slowly. My rule of thumb is if you get frost you can consider rye

It might seem like overkill but have you ever tried/heard of anyone who has spread seed, laid down some hessian matting, then top dressed with sand/soil, so as to not disturb the seed? Not sure if the hessian would have enough time to break down between autumn and spring for the revival of the couch. Edit: perhaps some kind of perforated paper? My theory is that it will hold moisture and stop birds
@theaussielawn2 жыл бұрын
When we use to seed new golf greens back in the day we would use a seed cloth, You lay it on the surface as a final step it would create a little micro climate it would also stop sprinkler wash and you would often get much faster germination etc you would remove it after a period of time . I reckon hessian would work for couch / kikuyu seed and probably rye if you wont planning only having it for 1 winter
@FrilledProductions2 жыл бұрын
@@theaussielawn when we did our new greens at Maleny golf club we would chuck all the tiff dawrf stolons out, covering the surface of the green then pin hessian over the top to stop the wind blowing them off. Every couple of days we would check and lift the hessian as the couch would start to grow through the holes and we didnt want to rip them out. Same thing with the watering schedule. every hour on the hour then turn it back each day/ week. The technique worked a treat and we had greens to play on in a couple of months

Hi Brenton I’ve been thinking of oversowing my kik for winter however the one thing that stopped me is what herbicide to use when spraying out the rye. Usually the herbicides that kill the rye will kill the kik as well.

There isn't actually a selective chemical but that being said rye and kikuyu go together pretty well its a popular mix especially on horse race tracks etc Id also be less inclined to super scalp the kikuyu Id go more with a heavy scarify and low mow but not to dirt
