The Two Types Of Blue Heelers and How They Were Created. The blue heeler also known as the australian cattle dog was created by two different people. First there was the halls heeler then the queensland heeler. Today we see just one heeler and call them a blue heeler or red heeler.

Growing up on a ranch in Arizona, we have used them for years. My first couple were registered with the Rare Dog Association. I pray the AKC doesn’t ruin this breed like they have with every other breed they have been involved with.

Yeah, I've seen how some of the dogs registered don't seem healthy. Pugs for example could benefit from being crossed with dogs with longer snouts. Yet that's show dogs though. If you're going to breed a dog they need a purpose. For example they can be pets, but they can also be trained for a job.

Yes, I've never even heard of blue heelers before. A neighbor of mine bred them. We got one for my daughters birthday and also, we have 13 acres and wantedba family dog since our sweet coco (black lab) was no longer with us. He is so extremly smart. He's 6 months old now. He nips at the kids heels when i call them in from outside. Never hurts them but it comes so natural. It's so cool.

An interesting point is that Heelers are born white. The Reds and the Blues are “interchangeable “ for lack of another word. Like with Labs. You can get black, Chocolate, and Yellow in the same litter. I have a 5 year old Blue female . Her father was a Red and her mother was a Blue. In the litter of 6, 4 were Red and 2 were Blue, including my dog. You can even breed 2 Blues and have some Red pups. 👍😊Good luck with your Heeler. I would never have anything else!

WHY?? Blue heelers and RED HEELERS can be in the same litter!! Why do people always do videos only on blues?? Why not do them on HEELERS or ACDs ... Like doing videos only on black labs and not golden or chocolate labs.... They're all Labrador Retrievers...

It all started after Thomas Hall died and thereafter and as part of the probate of his estate, his Hall's Heeler dogs were allowed to be sold to non-Family and non-long time employees of his vast ranch holdings. And "show dog" folks were then allowed to purchase his dogs. It was after that that show dog enthusiasts (rarely actually using the dogs to ranch/farm) took fancy/became interested in the Hall's Heelers (some took a hand at breeding in other dogs). One such person was a journalist - Robert Kaleski (author). He wrote a book - Barkers and Biters, where he stated untrue facts. He was part of the show dog club. The club took a disliking to the "red Thomas Hall dogs". TheEvey disapproved of the red Heelers. Robert Kaleski took it upon himself to write stories about the dogs and he also bought some of the Hall's Heelers dogs. Thereafter, show folks did not seek out the red's. They made conclusions that the reds were inferior in some way. Robert Kaleski took it on himself to write the first Breed Standards for the cattle dog. He made statements of disapproval for the red cattle dog. Even the Breed Standard in the United States followed the Breed Standard that Robert Kaleski first wrote. And also other countries accepted his written Breed Standards.

@@DogsNowChannelactually the correct name is Queensland Heeler. Blue tick or Red, about 25% are born Red. ACD is a Septic Tank term, and the dopey Sepos are now trying to start a breed they call american Heeler. Just as there is no such dog as Australian Kelpie, its just Kelpie. Oh, and Kelpies were never bred in the original Halls Heelers. Kelpies originated around Casterton Victoria

@@markhill9275 In the U.S. - the term "American Heeler" pertains to breeders that created, through selection, dogs that were smaller in size ... those followers and owners have been working on receiving breed acceptance of these small type cattle dogs ... and most likely naming the new recognized breed - American Heelers. But, also, Hall's Heelers were smaller dogs. Over time, dog show folks have bred them bigger in the U.S. and also Australia, etc. * * The Thomas Hall dogs have had different names over time. I may be incorrect, but it was in Australia where efforts were done to name the Hall's Heeler to "Queensland Heelers". Agreed: Kelpies were never bred into the original Halls Heelers; neither was the Border Collie.

Great video. But there is another "blue heeler" breed. It is the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. I have had ACD before and recently lost my old dogs due to age and was ready to get 2 pups. They were advertised as blue heelers and we went to pick 2 out of 7 puppies from same litter. 4 pups were born without tails, the other 3 had very short tails. I got my pups and went home and researched because all ACD are born with tails. These puppies are different. They are as tall as their length unlike ACD which are shorter than their length. They also do not heel from the rear, they grab the front of your feet. This is how they herd cattle, from the head, not the nipping of the rear legs. Ears are closer together, and their colors are not muddled. They have red saddles and socks but zero red anywhere else. They do have the Bentley mark just like the ACD and just as smart. My pups are 6 months old now and just about have me under their control. I love it.

There are two SIZES of aussi cattle dogs too. One has a slim Longer body, long legs and muzzle with taller ears. Those are from the Dessert Dingo who need that body style for their environment. The other is from the Mountain Dingo. Shorter more Robust Muzzle, Larger Chest for more lung capacity, Shorter Stronger Legs and Shorter ears. I prefer the ladder as they are just a better all around dog. Besides, the first one I ever had was from that size...Dooley,,and he was DA MAN. LOL

ACD's are not all high drive. We have had 4 females. ACD's are my heart breed. Our 4 ACD's were all "medium energy". Every dog breed has different energy levels. Because it is a certain breed, does not mean that all of that breed of dog has the same energy. How you train/teach and live with your ACD will also create an energy. Often times, a Heeler that is way over as to energy level .. is .. a dog that is deprived of sleep and also of learning calmness. Working a dog's brain will tire them out much, much faster than exercise and last much longer.

I have a ACD and Australian Shepherd mix. She was a lot of work as a puppy not for the faint of heart. We also have a elderly Chihuahua sometimes they don't get a long other times they love eachother. I wouldn't recommend having both in the house. For us I wanted to rescue the ACD, she is so sweet and silly. It's a challenge with a small house and yeard but we have a great dog park. I really wouldn't have wanted her around babies but now that she's older and trained better it's manageable. I love watching her play with my kids. She is so friendly and loves other dogs. She doesn't like birds in her yard though😅. It's a never ending job clearing the trees, and air of them. I would love to have another some day when we have more room.

Actually this is factually wrong! The Queensland Heeler was created from a cross between the Halls Heeler and the Timmins Biter. The biter had a lot of Dingo, they used to tie out bitches on heat for the Dingoes to mate with. The biter was too rough with the cattle, so they mated with the Halls Heeler and thus the Queensland Heeler was born. My source is my Grandma, Emma Hall.
@susagor
@susagor Жыл бұрын
Thomas Hall created the Hall's Heeler -- 30 years he improved the breed. He bred a Northumbrian cur dog to the dingo. Timmen's nor any other non-related person was not allowed to purchase a Hall's Heeler dog. Only after Thomas Hall died and his estate was probated were non-family members allowed to buy his dogs from the probate of his estate. However, the cattle dog had already been created .. by Thomas Hall - Hall's Heelers. Yes - Timmens purchased from the Thomas Hall sale -- but, his attempt to "improve the dog" failed -- his attempted breed was too hard and enthusiastic of a biter -- his breeding attempts failed. I read that the brief name of Queensland Heeler was from show dog folks and people who lived in Queensland who owned the Hall's Heelers dogs and they felt that the dog name should represent where they lived. Later, the name was dropped and Australian Cattle Dog was adopted to represent all owners in Australia, thus: Australian Cattle Dog. Sources: Library of Australia; A Dog Named Blue; Historian Bert Howard; ABC news in Australian; and Guy Hull's highly researched book: The Dogs That Created Australia ....

The name of Australian Cattle Dog was created later. The original dog was named Hall's Heelers, by the creator of the breed, Thomas Hall. His dogs were not sold to others (I read that one of his dog's was stolen) until after he died (and as part of the estate probate). His dedicated, loyal and hard-working employees were allowed to keep some of his Hall's Heelers, while in his employ. And his brothers/family were also allowed to have his Hall's Heelers. After his death, the dogs were called the Australian Cattle Dog and also Queensland Heelers. And show dog folks were thereafter able to purchase some of his dogs ... and several tried to make the breed better, but failed at that. That's where as many as 5- 7 breeds have been states to be part of the ACD (though inaccurate).

@@fasteddie9201 I'd have to go back and research; my memory is fading. Timmen's Biters were after Thomas Hall died and his estate assets were listed for sale. At that time, after Thomas Hall's death, as part of the probate, his dogs were then offered for sale to the "public". Timmen's is the last name of a guy who bought some of Thomas Halls, Hall's Heeler dogs (while he was alive, his dogs were not allowed to be sold to the general public. I do recall that one of his dog's was stolen, though). The gentleman, Timmens, tried his hand at breeding -- but, turned out that the dogs he created were too rough on the livestock -- biting too hard, etc. At least that's what I recall/remember. There's an ABC web/radio station where there are articles re: the early Australian cattle dogs and a video and/or article re: the Stumpy. Also, Guy Hull has written a very well-researched and accurate book -- short name of the book is The Dogs That Made Australia Great ...". Hull covers a lot of depth and history of early Australia; talks about the other dogs brought to the new colonies for various work; the struggles of those coming on ships, the dogs that are said to be part of the breed, but were not, etc. An example is that the Border Collie did not exist at that time, so it was impossible for the Border Collie to be in the Hall's Heelers breed. He gathered information from the Library of Australia and talked with others who had/have early knowledge about the Hall's Heelers; one researcher that Hull worked with is Thomas Bert -- a historian of Australia and the Hall's Heelers; and Bert also married a descendant of the Hall Family - thus having personal knowledge.

Guy Hull reports in his book that the Border Collie ... for many years was banned from being in Australia. And he explains why the Hall's Heeler pups were born white. He also states that the Dalmatian was not bred into the Hall's Heeler dogs.

The video includes inaccuracies. Check out the book by Guy Hull -- if you want to know the true creation of the Australian Cattle Dog. The creation of the ACD did not include Kelpies, Dalmations, nor Bull Terriers. During the creation of the ACD, Border Collies did not exist (they were not created during the time Thomas Hall initially bred a Northumbrian Cur dog to Dingoes). Thomas Hall bred his Hall's Heelers for over 30+ years and they were not available to non-family people until after Tom Hall's death. (mid-1880's). Border Collies came later. Only one "sheep dog" was involved as to the ACD. That was the extinct Northumbrian Cur Dog (not a BC). Like all breeds of dogs, ACD's come in different energy levels -- they are not all High Drive dogs. ---- The Dogs that Made Australia - The fascinating untold story of the dog's role in building a nation from the Whitely Award winning author of The Ferals That Ate Australia By Guy Hull

Ummm, it was not thousands of acres. The biggest cattle stations (ranches) have been broken up, but the largest remaining one is Anna Creek Station which has an area of 9,142 sq miles! That is 5,851,000 acres, about 7 times the size of King Ranch, the biggest ranch in the USA. When I saw your title I thought you were going to talk about the Stumpy. The story of the ACT in all its guises (including the stumpy which wasn't always a separate breed) is complex and messy with a lot of conflicting stories and the odd controversy. Also, I believe the breed has a recessive (dominant) gene that can cause the various tail configurations, probably inherited from the Smithfields which was used by both Hall and Timmins early in the breed's development. Are there even any pure lineage stumpies in the USA? They are not common in Oz. The stumpy behaviour that some people have described in the comments surprises me. There is no reason why they should be so wild, is there something else in their lineage?

the only Queensland blue is a pumpkin, they are all from Hall's Healers that were either straight blue or red merle coated as they carry the red genes from the Dingo and the blue gene from the Blue Merle Collie. The patches and speckles came in from the Dalmation that was crossed in to make the breed less likely to bight the stockman's horse as they were the cattle by Drovers that brought them to the Sydney Homebush sale yards the original working strains are the taller more athletic types and the stocky shorter ones were created more for show dogs as was the aesthetic of the time. I don't agree with any Bull Terrier being introduced but possibly some Kelpie that has recently through DNA proven to also carry Dingo blood. Their main purpose was to muster and push large herds of semi wild cattle on large holdings over large distances along by punishing any that dared to try and leave the heard. Cattle in these places over a century ago greatly resented and attacked herding dogs as they were predated by Dingo's when pastured so the stockmen needed very forceful dogs with more bite and attitude than Kelpies. Kelpies are headers which means they go the head and turn stock to herd them as per Border Collie's, ACD's are healers they push from behind but will bite the nose if the animal tries to charge them, its the stocks instinctive need to escape a couple of mean nasty biting healers that drives them back to seek relief back amongst the herd. They are tough, loyal, courageous, protective and great around a farm if properly socialised to the other animals on the farm and to be trained and obedient as an untrained ACD is one of the most destructive havoc creating dog breeds if left to it's own devices and are one of the most challenging breeds to raise and train. Can be obsessed with water and returning a ball and a good deterrent to saddle thieves if put in charge of a horse trailer and its contents and any visitors to your farm need to be properly introduced to your ACD or they will treat them as suspicious and could bite.

Hi Aussie here. Old mate there is trying hard to flog his product, fair enough. Cattle Dogs (infact dogs) are scavengers. Their stomachs handle bacteria fine. Dogs often bury bones and meat for later. I only tell you this because you can give them out of date meat etc from your fridge instead of throwing it out. I feed my dogs, pig trotters, lamb and chicken necks, ox tails, ribs, whole rabbits, ducks, kangaroos. Bones with plenty of meat are great. It keeps them busy and maintains their teeth and gums. NEVER give dogs cooked bones. Cooking changes the molecular structure of bones and they splinter in the dogs thoat and gut. Just cooked meat is ok too. Cheers to you. Oh dogs are omnivores so throw in some cooked vegetables. Also never ever give dogs chocolate. It can kill them. They like milk (without lactose) Lactose gives em runny poo.

I feed mine like this as well a little bit of everything but I try to give him the best quality cheap bits of the animals (chicken feet gizzards livers organs) and any meat that’s sat in the fridge or freezer a bit too long but only raw. Cooked old meat can make them sick. But mine has never had a problem with old raw meat it’s actually incredibly healthy for them

Kelpie was not part of the true ACD creation - Hall's Heelers. The Collie was the extinct Northumbra (Northumbrian Cur .... an ancient pre-cursor of the BC). They were used as sheep herding dogs on his families holdings and Thomas Hall imported some breeders from his parents holdings. Guy Hull, in his book, explains that the BC was not created at the time that Thomas Hall created the Hall's Heelers and bred and refined his dogs for over 30 years.
