The artists on this collection vary widely in style, from the sophistication of Fred Astaire, to the warmth and humour of Flanagan and Allen. However, they all share two things in common: in their day - the thirties and forties, they were the very best in their field; and they all have the ability to evoke that wonderful era for us today - the golden age of popular music. Whether wartime memories evoked by Vera Lynn, or memories of the dance hall with Glenn Miller - we are entering the warm world of nostalgia! Twenty-four different artists, all singing their greatest hits.
We begin our survey with one of the greatest songs of the period, Love Is The Sweetest Thing, sung in the definitive 1932 recording by the great Al Bowlly. Originally from Mozambique, he was the most popular dance band singer of the thirties, and the most prolific, recording more than six-hundred titles. Tragically, he was killed during the Blitz in London, but the legacy he left behind is ours forever.
Mysterious, glamorous Marlene Dietrich was born in Berlin, and as a child studied music. She began her German film career in 1923, and in 1930 made her most successful film, ‘The Blue Angel’, in which she sang the classic Falling In Love Again. She went on to make many films, mostly in the USA, and in later life began a new career in cabaret.
Sweet Lorraine is performed here by Nat King Cole in his Trio days, before he achieved his later huge fame. The Trio had their first hit in 1942, with ‘Straighten Up And Fly Right’, and became more popular throughout the forties, before they disbanded in 1951. Cole went on to launch his meteoric, solo career, achieving almost eighty hit singles in Billboard charts before his sadly premature death in 1965.

The reason you guys like this music is because it's really good music. It was produced in an era when there were many songwiters and songwriting teams, and the competition was fierce. There was tremendous creativity and standards were high. The other thing is that mostly only the best stuff has survived to the present. I love this old music as well as old movies. I know a lot of young people won't watch black and white films. You are really missing out. Seriously, look up the original King Kong, Lost Horizon, Meet John Doe, Top Hat, Casablanca, Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, 42nd Street, Mr Smith Goes to Washington, Citizen Kane...anything with the Marx Bros. Then there are the silent films. Don't get me started.

I'm so sorry your country was so badly bombed. War is such a nasty thing. Your country bombed ours, (England), greatly, but our response was also terrible. Over the past few years I bought a number of CD's from this company as birthday and Christmas presents for an elderly friend who died recently and I don't think I could have given him anything better. It was the music of his era and he played them every day and the music helped him to get through his last few years as a widower who longed to be reunited with his late wife. The quality of these recordings is excellent.

I am only 16 and for some reason, I just can't understand what my generation sees in music now. I can't understand anything they like honestly, other then listening to music and doing art. Music back then was lively and clean. There was no swears, no autotune, and no rap. I envy anybody who was alive to see these bands play live.

It saddens me to see life in the 50s, the styles, the music, the caaaars 😍😍, the entertainment, the Company, and knowing that it won’t be like that again 😔 I always say I was born in the wrong generation, you look at me, my favorite music (this kind of music, ranging from 20s to 60s), the classic tv shows and movies that I watch, just the appreciation I have for the things back then. I sent my friend my Spotify playlist and she sent me „👵🏻“ I said „thank you 😂“ I crave- i don’t know how to say it- I crave waking up and playing baseball all day everyday with my best friends (The Sandlot), I don’t know how to say what else I‘m trying to say- in the movie about The Little Rock Nine, the boys were outside playing basketball and the little radio was playing music in the background and there was lemonade, no smartphones, the communication was all there, it was natural, I don’t know how else to describe it, but I want that 🤧 I want more friends that appreciate these things the way I do, I’ve got one friend who lives across the country who likes these things, but I‘m just surrounded by my generation, and some of the kids have no respect, no morals, selfishness, it’s Just- I don’t know- not me, at all. If you made it this far, I appreciate you ❤️ Let’s be friends :) I’ve always got room in my life for kind people, unique people ~17 y/o 😌❤️✨

I’m 27 years old and have always been drawn to the older generations music, just so meaningful compared to todays music

Ahhh such sweet songs. Too bad I was born in the 2000's I wish I were born in the 1930's.

I restore antique radios from the 1930s and 40s and this music is perfect to play on them through my AM transmitter. Thank you for this site.

Sean Tonnesen Ooohhh I wish I had one. I'd play this sort of music everyday as I clean the house and cook for my loving husband day after day.
