Carl, I was surprised to find as of about an hour ago it was still open. I have come back to simply say thank you, one thing I need to get better at, as part of attempting to get the upholstery business going, is finishing. Also like to learn how to make cabinets. Cheers, Adriel

Yes, the Engels Coach Shop is one of the best on YT and the master has a huge loyal following - you have made great strides and being willing to learn means willing to err and refocus. It is a pity about Brexit and the time wasting of back and forth trips!

Engles Coach is a great channel with a wealth of information shared relating to carpentry, blacksmithing and more. I’ve wondered about applying glue to both surfaces before too and I know that 99% of woodworkers do it that way as well as the product manufacturers instructing that way too.

Thanks Carl, from Canada 🇨🇦. Well done. I’ve done a number of glued up laminations and they’re always a journey in running out of clamps, wood breaking, jigs breaking, glue all over the place, running out of room and what seems to be a breakneck pace. In then end, though, they are worth it and look great. Thanks for showing us your techniques.

perseverance pays off. Having tested many glues, I have found titebond products to work well, holding in exposed and damp conditions. Decade back the animal glues really were tricky but essential for reglueing antique chairs where hot air treatment allows one to disassemble and reassemble pieces. Thanks for brightening the day for a very elderly chap.

As a boat builder having experience with both ways of getting wood to bend to Your ideas, I have to contribute that glue-lam is the way better, more consistent, more predictable process when it comes to curved parts. I do adore and love what Dave Engels does to his woods, but I still am a dedicated lamellating-guy ("lamellating" is what the Gougeon brothers call their ways of building all kinds of glue-lam with epoxy resin, including 3D-shperic bowls and boat hulls. They have a great book I recommend for Your growth as a lamellating guy: "Gougeon brothers on boat construction") Thanks for sharing

So glad you took the time to go a little way down the ‘steam’ rabbit hole . A) I’d been wondering …I’d suspected you had considered steam and discounted it for some sensible set of reasons ..but now i know B) its introduced me to another great YT’er and along the way I’ve learnt something from both of you 😊

Love your videos. Glad you optimized time in EU to get things done rather than satisfy me. I've been watching Engel's Coach for years. Wonderful guy, and he knows a LOT. I was not thinking about how you should do it like that, because you're not him. You're doing something different than what he does. I'm patient, and I'm glad to see you're getting the job done your way, and it's working. Thank you very much for sharing your work with us.

Big glue-ups, to me, are THE most stressful part of woodworking. Disaster always occurs when a clamp 'pops' - always a second clamp for insurance. 20 years ago I made a 'rolling woodworking shop' with glue-lam curved roof - much like yours. It's still in use. I was on its roof, walking around just last week. Still solid.

You came up with some good solutions to speed up the process. Applying glue to both sides helps to slow down set time because there is a little more glue than the bare wood can soak up, and it is supposed to be 20% stronger than only gluing 1 side. Also PVA glue can be thinned up to about 5% without affecting bond strength and will also slow down set time. Good work.

Hey Carl, i really enjoy your project! Just a little tip from a carpenter for saving some money from sawblade sharpening: What you are using here are universal blades. For long rip cuts especially in hardwood like oak i'd suggest using rip cut blades (for your 85mm saw those with 12 teeth). That's a lot easier on the machine aswell ;) Keep up the good work and best wishes to you from germany!

When laminating, after laying down your glue, try sprinkling a light layer of regular table salt, between each lamination. It minimizes the creeping/slipping, of the wood layers while tightening your clamps.

Next time, try DAP WELDWOOD Plastic Resin Glue. It’s the best product for bent wood laminations (also MUCH less expensive than Titebond). Depending on the application, PVA glue can “creep”, and loose its bent shape over time. WELDWOOD will not creep, and also has a long open time. Peace.

Nice video. I also like watching the video channel >Engels Coach Shop< because it shows an "old profession" - that of a wheelwright/wagon builder. He is versatile, he shows metalworking, woodworking and fabric processing when he sews seat covers and/or carriage roofs. When he sews, he has a very old sewing machine. I only use the Titebond glue because it can be washed off with water when you use it and if something happens to the piece of wood after a few years, you can dissolve the old Titebond glue with hot water and re-glue it.
