A great review by the crew at Edmunds. Many thanks. Regarding prices, Type R; $45,890, GR Corolla; $46,000, Mustang; $56,400, Elantra N; $35,320. Regarding the Mustang, thank you Ford for still making the Mustang and making it available with a V8 and with a manual transmission. Considering that the Mustang did not have the magneride suspension, and the tight course, it performed very well in the autocross. The big surprise for me was how the underpowered Elantra N performed in the autocross test, with beating the GR Corolla and being pretty close to that of the Type R. In my opinion, with the Elantra being the cheapest here, and by a big margin, with what it achieved it is the winner. It is terrific that there are still fantastic fun petrol cars available. Any of these cars will bring great joy to their owners. :)

@30hours515 ай бұрын
lap time does not suggest great handling, handling is a translation of cars feedback to the driver and driver's confidence pushing the car to the limit, GRC with its awd, swb and it's extremely rigid chassis makes it handles better because it is easy. Also EN is on PS4S, Corolla is on a less aggressive PS4 tires. Also every single independent track test suggest that the GR Corolla is faster than the elantra N on the track with the same tires, but let me continue. In 2024, none of these cars had tried a official lap time at Laguna Seca... But EN is an absolute performance bargain for the price of a GR86 today, recommanded my friend to get one, great car.

Thing is, the EN can go straight to the track without overheating in a lap or two, or killing its OEM tires, or catching fire if you go over 85mph. (Which Toyota won't cover under warranty). The Type R has NO weakness. It's the most practical, has the most room, fantastic gas mileage, low cost of ownership, the best reliability, the best inputs (steering, shifter, and chassis feel) also has the best sport bucket seats probably ever made, and greatest manual shifter ever made. It's arguably the greatest car ever made under 45kish dollars. It and the 6th Gen Camaro SS 1LE are the best performance cars/do it all cars ever made under 45k dollars. If you need a back seat, get the CTR, if not SS 1LE. But man, the CTR IS SPECIAL. It's literally a FWD Porsche Cayman, LITERALLY.

@GERONIMO3265 ай бұрын
@davothegreat9990 then you obviously haven't driven one. The CTR is lighter than the Elantra N, they weigh roughly the same depending if it's manual or auto. The CTR has the best sport bucket seats ever made, best mechanical manual shifter ever, handles like it's on rails, made in JAPAN, fit and finish is LEAGUES ahead of every other car in it's segment, the Elantra N isn't even in the same ballpark. 0 to 60 and 1/4 mile times don't tell the tale. If you are a true driving enthusiast, the CTR is one the best cars ever made. If you're not, you make comments such as yourself. The CTR is worth EVERY penny it's priced at.

Cheaper is a relative term with the CTR. The FL5 is $10,000 more than the FK8 and while it looks better, I'm not seeing a commensurate level of improvement over the previous gen. Also the FL5 hits close to $50,000 with taxes, tags, and no assumed markup and that is a lot for a fast economy car.

These cars straight line performance wise are considered 'slow' nowadays after Hyundai released the I5N and Tesla the 2024 M3P (U.S. version). You would have to invest some serious money to get an Elantra N into the 10's constantly without having to put in wrench time every couple runs. Jason did an 11.65 after hybrid turbo and running meth and some other upgrades ... slicks and on the track (not on the street which isn't prepped and with legal tires mind you) and still didn't beat the previous model M3P. Golf R would be easier but costs more... would have to swap out the Turbo most likely to get into the 10's which will fuXor your warranty on these cars. Tesla M3P (U.S.) for 47900 (after tax credit and no dealer markups lol) is the best bang for the buck now. Avg. of 10.8s in the quarter and 2.7 sec (w/rollout) 0 - 60mph anywhere really... no need for drag radials/slicks or prep :P There is no other *new stock car that can touch those #'s for under 50k!

The conclusion of the video is that it's really a 3way tie. The Mustang wins against the CTR in 3rd handling/fun category... even without the magnaride, but then the magnaride makes it even better but for even more money. If that happens, then the Mustang wins and the CTR and GRC are tied... but then, if the CTR is better priced than the Mustang, then the CTR wins... but then, if the CTR is better priced so it wins, the GRC is even better priced (GRC core with performance package, $8k less than CTR) so it wins. You basically need a whole other category which takes into account bang for your buck, and clearly the GRC would pull up to the CTR and Mustang... which means 3way tie... but, then there's the dealer issue/factor... there is NO WAY you are going to be treated like any decent human being at any Honda dealer, and Toyota is generally the better dealer experience... so, because of the dealer experience, I feel the GRC wins this beating the others out by a nose... but it's basically a 3way tie. In final, I WOULD NEVER STEP FOOT IN A HONDA/ACURA DEALER WITH MY EXPERIENCE! So to me, the CTR loses to all of them, even a Hyundai.

I feel like the weighting of the autocross shouldn't be equal to the other categories because most people aren't willing to void their warranty so they can autocross it. If the weighting is the same, then the price should also be the same and you can include modifications to all of them so that they are all at the $56k level with mods, or without as in the Mustang case. If the weighting is half (out of 2pts, not out of 4) then the Mustang and GRC are tied and the CTR is in 3rd place... or, you could just say it's a 3-way tie because it really is.
