In this first episode of this free engine building lesson series we take a quick look at some of the key considerations we need to think about before touching the tools. Parts selection, head gasket construction and fasteners, engine machinist task, selection and more are all some of the key elements that go into any successful performance engine build.
LS V8, FA20, SR20, $G63, Coyote V8, NB8, K20, turbocharged, supercharged, naturally aspirated, the list goes on and the relevance of this key knowledge remains the same regardless of the engine configuration, orientation or amount of cylinders you are dealing with.

Cheers mate! 2nd one should be hot on the heels, the 3rd and 4th aren't quite finished yet so might be a few more weeks away but thought we'd get the ball rolling rather than having these sitting there waiting any longer for you interested fellas 😎 - Taz.

Not so sure on this one. If your planning on building the engine or engines a No. of times it makes sense. If its a one off just the cost of good measuring tools is going to outway any engine builder unless its Judd or Cosworth

What my power aim is and what my engine is capable of are two VERY DIFFERENT to each other goals, and it's not the usual KZbin mindset of aiming for 1000hp and only capable of 500hp. Infact, it's quite the opposite. Overbuilt for the task at hand. What this also allows is longevity in your performance engine. No use having 1000hp if you have to rebuild it every 1000miles. 😎👍

Cool summary video. Unless it's about to build an extreme performance engine for casual runs I prefer to stand on stock cast pistons to avoid the need for extra clearance which is something not really good when it comes to frequently running engine. I don't like much mls head gaskets, prefer cutrings ones or even copper sheet + stainless steel wire in a groove

My daily has forged pistons. It knocks a little bit at idle, but otherwise you wouldn’t notice ;)

@@drewski5730 mine is using stock pistons. Outputs between 450 and 500hp / 600+ Nm at 340 kPa of boost (240 kPa positive). That machine is already frightening at that power level, I don't think about power levels requiring forged pistons... :)

@@vozhdmeister5256 I recently switched my turbo to a modern Borg Warner from an an old school SX200. It makes 100 more horsepower, but the car is much more civilized. Being streetable is more of a function of power delivery in my books. The old 400hp was terrifying, the new 500hp is exciting and I wouldn’t batt an eye letting my 78 year old mother take the car for groceries in snowy road conditions. I didn’t build the engine, the previous owner did, but I can state for fact that there is nothing wrong using a car as a daily with forged pistons, provided you get your head around a bit of knock at idle at times.

As Andre said in the video, that is a job for your machinist, as doing that requires very expensive equipment and expertise only a machinist has.

Rafael covered that one for us. Really outside of the scope of all but a very small amount of home enthusiasts who would most likely know what they're doing if they've spent 10's of thousands on the equipment to be fair, so it's not something we will focus the time on sorry. If you want a bit more insight into it all these guys do some great short and long-form content around machining: kzbin.info - Taz.
