Hi Tynia, I'm wondering if I have the correct order of these 3 steps for a release: 1. copyright song, 2. register with PRO, 3. publish song. It seems like publishing should be the last step. However, when copyrighting, it asks if the song is published.. If I indicate that the song is not yet published, then do I need to submit an additional copyright after it does get published? (I'm assuming publishing the song prior to copyright is a huge no-no)

@@atuvelman Hi! How are you going to be releasing the song?? Honestly, copyrighting a song is not that important at first unless you are already making a good amount of $$ from your music. Technically once you put it online, you own the copyright & it is copyright protected, so I wouldn't place that much importance on copyrighting it first.

Great informative video. Can you please give information on what to do if you self publish and your songs get attached to another artist with the same name? I jumped the gun with a few of my songs and released them using Repost by SoundCloud (which you never mention so I wonder if it isn’t a good choice). I am able to get ISRC and UPC and distribute to many outlets but only Apple Music and Spotify give me a profile there that I can automatically attach the releases to. Deezer and Amazon Music and probably all others have attached my songs to an different artist and it has been months trying to get them to change it. Will this artist get my royalties? I released these under that pseudonym because I only wanted to perform under my government name for instrumentals as I never intended to be the actual artist on anything. I released these less mainstream songs with the pseudonym and now it is a mess. Please any help is greatly appreciated! ❤️

Can't they handle International Standard Recording Codes ? It would seem that you should be able to provide the ISRC once during the initial release and they should all key off that. Alternative names is a nightmare.

What's the best way to approach a major record label while being an independent artist without a manager or team. I'm an artist who has a solid fanbase and has successfully gotten to the point where master recording royalties alone bring in $3k on average per month. What would be the best way to get their attention? My goal is to get a fair contract where I'd be able to keep my masters and get a decent advance that would allow me to boost my career to the next level as well as other label resources I wouldn't be able to get on my own. Hi Tynia, I know that this video is about a whole different topic but I'd love to know the answer to my questions. I'm am a writer, although I sing my songs unordered to get them complete with my vision, I truly don't want to perform my song as a singing artist. In that senerio am I shooting myself in the foot in terms of making money? would you recommend that I try to sell the song to an artist that might be interested in buying it? If so, please tell me how that works. How much money can I expect to make by selling my songs? I have a question on how the last tip you gave works. So I produce and write music with two other people in my label (of us 3 i'm the only artist). Two of us are with BMI currently, and the other producer/writer is with ASCAP. The two of us on BMI have a BMI publisher but the ASCAP producer/writer doesn't have a publisher at all, just the writing account. Would need to register each of our collaborative works with both ASCAP and BMI to get royalties from both PRO's? How would we get our ASCAP publishing royalties with our song being registered by our ASCAP person who doesn't have a publisher? Any help answering this would be great

Hey Tynia new subscriber here. Love the content and appreciate it! I have a question for you. I make instrumentals that different artist use as well as I use. So how do I go about adding these to BMI? Every song has a different name so do you add it the same way as an alternate name? Or keep adding it separately? Because another artist could jump on the same instrumental a week later or 2 months later if that makes sense. If you have any advice on that I would appreciate that. Excellent question! They are different than metadata. Alternate titles & alternate artist names need to be added through your PRO on your song registrations & on the artist's account names.

Hi Tynia, interesting stuff! So my issue everytime I register a song is the writer's name (I'm by BMI). It's never clear enough if you have to type your real name and lastname or your stage name. I have noticed that I have registered my songs always with my real name (cause I thought that's what you have to do), but obviously, when I distribute I submit my artist name. What do you think I should do? Register the song again with my stage name instead? And in the future, in order to avoid this confusion, can I just register a songs as writer/composer using my stage name? Thks!

Helpful tips!! I use BMI. When you say add alternative titles, does that mean register the same work several times with different names/titles etc that might be being used on youtube, pandora etc? Or is there a way to edit one work on BMI with multiple titles?

Happy to help! :) There is a section when you're registering your work with BMI that will ask for "alternative titles"; here you would add all the alternative titles for how the song is displayed on different platforms. If the song is already registered, then you can just email BMI and tell them which alternative titles you want to add to a work.
