He's not soloing, he's composing. So many solos consist of only demonstrations of speed and technical dexterity. This solo is way beyond that. He's telling a story, constructing themes that he returns to. It's so beautiful. And it's worth noting that the most technical flurries of dense notes are played at very low volume, while very simple passages are often played with tons of velocity, enough that he rises from his seat. This alone makes this solo almost an inversion of the overwhelming number of drum solos you'll ever see. What an idea- the more notes you play, the quieter you play. Seems like a simple idea...but how many guys can pull it off, while leading us through a thematic journey? Musical and mesmerizing. If you don't get it, watch again.

I learned from him to bring character & humor to playing, also working with subtlety and silent twists that emphasize the song. But he couldn't be more away from my usual heroes like Gavin Harrison. Maybe Benny Greb is somewhere in between stylewise.

Yes,just wanted to agree. my washing machine does a great solo at spin cycle. Having the courage leave space and make it musical is a great thing. I play drums and if I could create melody and a story like that I'd be a happy man.

I think people need to realize that this is Mark's style. If you're the best at something, you're going to play that as a performance and discuss it. He utilizes subdivisions and breaking them down as fast as he can and then bringing them up. He's also a master at creating space while at the same time filling it. Just understand that him "playing the same thing over and over" is very impressive.

There is such a beautiful amount of chaotic finess within this man's playing. like the mad scientist of jazz dumming. Sounds all over the place, but to a refined ear, you can see Mark is making music with the drums!

It's almost as if he's doing morse code on the drums in a musical way and then exploring the musicality of the instrument itself. His playing on Bowie's final album is testament to that..

Mark Guiliana is ten thousand times the musician of anyone leaving a negative comment here. So just do yourself a favor and don't leave one. You're only making yourself look like an idiot to all of us who know anything about the instrument.

A friend of mine showed me this when it came out and I hated it and just dumbed it down to being an artsy pretentious drum solo, just not understanding it at all. Little was I to know, Mark over the course of the next six months would become my favourite drummer. I come back to this video quite alot and get something new from it each time and each time cringing at my initial reaction more and more

He shows in such grear manner that today's drummers don't need to play these huge long and fast tom-snare fills and soli to be respected. The fact that technique and feeling gained so much attention over the last two decades is totally shown in drummers like him!

to add to rhythmista's answer, the hats are a modified version of the artisan 14' hats, where the bottom is a normal artisan top and the top is a bit thinner than normal. This makes for very light hats, which Mark said he prefers. The ride is a prototype 23' artisan ride that he found on a shelf at the sabian factory, AFAIK it's one of a kind but you can get a 22' version of it. I don't know much about the left ride but he's said that it's another one-off he found in the sabian factory.

This is a good challenge for the recording engineer, as Giuliana is using the full dynamic range of the 4-piece Gretsch® kit with Evans®/D'Addario® Level360 heads (I plan on re-heading my Tama®/Hoshino® IS52KC in the expansion process with Onyx batters and Genera Resonants on toms, Marching Hybrid S batter and Hybrid 1 reso on snare, and EMAD Heavyweight kick batter) and 4-piece Sabian® cymbal outfit. (Remo® is subcontractor for the Tama® BH22B resonant, which is based on the ES-1022-00 Ambassador Bass.)

Wait a minute ... isnt that initial knocking sound emanating from an unbalanced camera stand off to his left? And the rocking of it on an imbalanced fulcrum the basis for what occurs next? Or am I being wacko to think that? OK. Just watched it again. It certainly seems that Guliana is incorporating the kinetic energy in 'rocking' the stand as a catalyst for the figures he starts to play, and that he is using the stand itself as a percussive element, and the most likely accidental rocking that occurred as a serendipitous part of his composition.
