Liked it up until he left baldini's place. I wanted him to rise in the world of perfumery, gain international fame and be recognised s the best in the world. In short, i wanted him to do everything Baldini got credit for, but over the course of the book. Instead, the dude chills in a hole for years and never surpasses the rank of Journeyman
@therobin9806 жыл бұрын
Grim Affiliations but let's just be honest: if the book actually would have ended the way you wanted it it to end, then it would have been quite predictable... What I love about the story is that it is not predictable and that it ends in a way you would have never expected it to
@grimaffiliations36716 жыл бұрын
it was unpredictable but thats not always a good thing. The writing was amazing, but it left something to be desired as far as story development. He lived out his days as an under appreciated journeyman, running errands for far lesser perfumers. That didn't sit well with me
@therobin9806 жыл бұрын
Grim Affiliations it's probably just a matter of taste. But just to mention it: In the end he wore his girl- perfume and got the ultimate fame, but he didn't appreciate it as much as he thought he would. Also he found that the reason why he lived was to create the perfect perfume, that's why he didn't want to make a living from the other perfumes.
@grimaffiliations36716 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he did get the ultimate fame in that sense, but it didn't seem like real recognition for his talent in my eyes, because none of them realised they were being manipulated by his scent. also the bit at the end when it was revealed that he could have literally taken over France made it feel worse when he killed himself.

we read this book in class and i loved how the dark story is told with this weird sense of irony; it reminded me of the movie la fabuleux destin d'amelie poulain (don't know the english title) or victor hugo's narrative. also this book is a patchwork of themes and motives of other works: eg grenouille is reminiscent of quasimodo from the hunchback of notredame in many ways. I thought this was very interesting when i first heard about it and now i definitely want to reread :D your edition is stunning by the way!

you uploaded this video ages ago but it just popped up in my recs so here's a kind of belated comment on this video. i'm so glad you liked this book, it's been at least three years if not more since i read it but i just loved it so much and i'm glad the translated version seems to transmit the same that the german original does!! i only read one other book by süskind which is called die taube in german (so maybe the pigeon in english??) which was pretty different but also very enjoyable. it follows a middle aged man who lives in paris and who goes through a kind of personal crisis simply because one day there is a pigeon in the hallway of his house. so that story is basically about human irrationality and it's super strange but also really funny in some way??? so if there is an english translation i would recommend that one to you :-)

It's indeed a really beautifully written book and with many things to think about. Few years ago I saw it in a bookshop and wanted to share thoughts about it with my cousin from USA and was surprised that she's never heard of it. I knew it waaaay before the movie. Actually in Poland it was pretty popular. Thanks for reminding me of it. I may reread it soon:) P.S. Beautiful edition!

Oh, I forgot. Have you read "The Double Bass" by Suskind? It's a fantastic very intelligent monodrama. I strongly reccommend.
@The-Portland-Daily-Blink2 жыл бұрын
Actually, the year was 2006 when the film came out. Because Jean Baptiste has been basically tortured and abused his whole life, he is not normal, or capable of human connection or love. If there is a lesson in this book or film it is that evil breeds more evil and a lack of love creates people who are incapable of love.
@OnionBudgie8 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Great review. Suskind hasn't been prolific since Perfume. I have a copy of The Pigeon (which I haven't yet read), which is a short novella. He's published a few other works, but I don't think all made it to English translation?
@amandadavies67518 жыл бұрын
The Pigeon is the other important book by Suskind but I must say it was a bit disapointing for me, although it is quality literature. However, it's so short that it's worth the read and can open up a whole series of thoughts due to its ambiguity and strangeness. Great review of Perfume!

i definitely did think this was a very bizarre book! like nothing i have ever read! though i do think it's a bit slow and boring at times and the ending murder spree and the capture of grenuile just happened so quickly while so much time had been given to other aspects of his life (like his time in the cave). i do see the importance of part two of the book, but i wished the ending could have been a bit more balanced in terms of pacing

After listening to a creepypasta where a doctor made a virus that makes everyone hungry then made the perfect being who was basically god and then everyone ate him, I decided to be a comments section comedic genius and make a mile long list of all the ways you can cook god. I just swapped out something in the name and put god in it. Someone was laughing and said it was like the ending of Perfume and that peaked my curiosity and that's what brought me here.

It's been years since I read the book, but I did so before watching the film. I loved the premise and a lot of the writing, particularly the focus on the olfactory descriptions. However, there were parts of the book that I found tedious to get through. I believe there's a part where he's just lying down, taking in the world by scent...and I'm just like, 'Dude, get off your ass.' Despite reading the book first, I did prefer the film adaptation, which I didn't expect, due to the fact that it doesn't evoke the sense of smell in the same way. Though I did like how visuals and music were used in a metaphorical manner. That isn't to say I disliked the book - it was a solid three stars for me - but it's not one I'm in a rush to re-read. At least not all the way through.
