Bro, I love the videos. I'm a mechanical engineer, I wanted to explain the buoy hack (this also applies to the push-pull challenge you show in part 5!). This method is what's known as a fail-safe mechanism. If the thing supplying the force required to suspend the system of the ball and sticks fails (the strength of your arms) then as long as certain conditions are met, the geometry of the system can enable the system to tend toward equilibrium as the system naturally moves from a high energy state to low energy state (higher potential energy the higher the ball is). This probably sounds like nonsense, but let me explain. With the poles angles downwards and the ball pinned between them, picture this: the ball begins to lower in the air. the ball contacts the top of the poles as it falls, which applies a downward force on the rod. The rod tip moves down. Now here is the trick. If you are able to keep your hand in a fixed position in space and not allow it to fall with the ball, then it will be as if the rod is "pinned" at your hand. Therefore it can't move straight down with the ball- it has to rotate about your hand. So then this downward force applied to the rods rotates them down and outward, away from the ball. But the rod tip is in a recess in the ball, so this essentially wedges the rod in place in the recesses in the ball- the top edge of the rod will bite down hard on the upper surface of the recess, applying a force inward and upward (this upward component is what is supporting the ball). The inward component is what is stabilizing the ball, since there is an equal and opposite force applied by default since there is another rod doing the same thing on the opposite side. This stabilizes the ball without you even trying. Your muscles don't need to recruit as many muscle fibers to maintain perfect posture, you just need to supply enough force to the rod to balance the system, and the internal forces of the system balance the ball. The ultimate hack would have been to take advantage of biomechanics and hold the system at your arms low energy state (completely hanging as low as possible, elbows straight). Otherwise your bicep has to remain in tension to not support the force, but to resist the tendency for your forearm to rotate about your elbow joint. Your hand is what is supplying the force regardless, so holding with any bend at the elbow just increases the amount of work you need to do.

For vid 5.0 - Shi Ann in AS1 (S8) increasing her endurance and winning immunity in the hold-your-arm-up-as-it's-chained-to-a-bucket-of-water challenge by not bending her arm and keeping it fully straight and locked at the elbow. This slowed down the fatigue on her bicep/tricep - technique was noted by Kathy in the DVD commentary. Also, in the following episode's immunity challenge (build a fire in a bucket, then raise it on a see-saw by filling a bucket on the other side with water) - Big Tom's technique of placing sticks across the top of the bucket to keep the fire burning high enough, buying more time to go back and forth from the lake to fill the other bucket with water.

For example the Icelandic Saga's don't talk about battle lies "oh and this guy broke this guy's neck and then he thrust his sword". No, they talk about the clever tactics leaders employed to deceive the enemy or to gain the advantage. This is also why our brains got better and better over time, because those with the smarts were winning, surviving.
