Looking forward to the all-important actual AI KITT. I wonder how much stuff in the car you could legally have AI KITT control (probably all the infotainment stuff, etc., just nothing involving actually driving the car). Though I wonder if you could get around that with TeslaKITT by having AI KITT issue instructions to the Tesla features.

Hi - Mr Fractic - this was fantastic... Yes yes... i'm a (reminder) You said last year that you will make other (similar era videos? Like perhaps visiting the Airwolf sites?) And whilst you at it: seeing as many of us will never be able to have out own KITTs, please make follow up videos in the future. I do not know if the "KIDD" in many of us will ever die. lol well I live in Iowa, n been to Many car shows with my KARR replica I built. n it kinda SUCKS that u walk away, Empty handed n no trophy cuz of , favoritism and bias. people voting 4 friends n neighbors. instead of cars. or participants voting 4 each other n car clubs as well. it's a SCAM. n just disappointing not 2 get a fair shot. when u Know u earned it. so I cam agree with him there. the shows should ALL be Spectator voting ONLY. then it would be fair. However when I'm out driving him , getting fuel. or at a show, all the people wanting pics or videos. makes it worth it. lol I went Southern Knights of Atlanta last month. n met Hasselhoff's former wife actress Catherine Hickland. and Toni Hudson. who was Dirk Benedict 's wife. he was Face in A Team and Starbuck in 78 Battlestar Galactica as well as Michael Scheffe. who designed the front bumper n dash. n AJ Palmgran from Knight Rider Historians. n got my car signed by them. n that's WAY better than any trophies.

I know it's not a 100% excuse but I think that besides maybe the last owner not having the budget to get this job done properly, it was the environment in which he probably had to work in. Great work! Speaking as an auto mechanic, one thing you may want to do long term, would be to replace those "wire twists" as you called them ( up here in Canuckistan we call them Marrettes) with crimp-style butt-connectors like the ring terminals you used on your power wire. You can even get ones with integral heat-shrink insulation. Wire nuts are mostly for stationary applications and buldings and in a vehicle are guaranteed to come loose.

So happy for you and great work so far. Kitt looks way better than what he started like. One suggestion about the power feed for the light bar. It would be safer to have the fuse next to the battery rather than in the car just in case something happens in the engine bay to the wire. Sadly I speak from experience and luckily the fuse by the battery blew and saved my car. I have been hoping for someone to put all the bits of a Tesla into either a Trans Am or a DeLorean for ages now, I hope you do. All the best.
@RetroRecipes

Good point! I discuss in episode one of KITTesla why I don't think that would work. Tesla's code is pretty locked down, and they cancel cars who try to hack. Also the cameras wouldn't align where Tesla expects them. It was my first thought but I think too far a stretch. Instead I put KITT in a Tesla!

I was surprised at first glance you didn't just replace the L.C.D's . I assume the connection options are much upgraded on the new displays. Oven silicone sealant might be a better choice over black tack. I know it's heat resistant up to 450 ° C and is black in colour . Also probably vibration resistant. Never tried it though on a car!. Amazing work and congratulations on the project so far. I’m too OCD on these sorts of things and it would take me forever. I’d end up redoing all the cabling, tidying it up, heat shrinking everything. 😂 A quick idea for you. Maybe get two of the cheap rear view cameras off the internet, mount one at the front and one at the back and connect them to one of the spare inputs on the screens. So you’d have a front view and rear view as you drive along. That would look cool I think and apart from the time involved routing the cabling shouldn’t be too much of a big job. Good luck with the rest of the project and looking forward to the next video. Also with regards to the A/C, because of the age of the car I’m wondering if maybe it broke and was just removed rather than fixed. Some of the components would have been possibly hidden behind the dashboard and I’m also wondering if it was all removed to install the dash kit? Blower motors, heater matrix, etc.

Just a thought, With the help of PCBWayyyyy you could maybe use a Raspberry Pi 4 and some Raspberry Pi Picos to clean up and add some more abilities to KITT while keeping the original look. The Pi 4 has support for dual screens and someone has already created KITT's voice box panel using a Pico. That would also allow for easy upgrading in the future as well! I have been in the custom/hot-rod industry for a couple decades (including doing work on licensed batmobiles, concept cars, etc) and having worked for some not so great shops, and some great shops - taking the car to a not so great shop will do nothing but ruin your ownership of a car. The easiest way to find a great custom car shop is to go to some car shows that have a variety of interesting cars and talk to the owners about who they recommend and don't. Here are some tips I have learned from working in the industry : Big time "walk away" indicators are projects that have been in the shop for a loooong time. Yes, some very high end builds take years - but if you walk into a shop that has many cars in process, and many have been there for years and aren't really high end then you can nearly bet that that shop is either milking the customers for more money than they should, or using funds from one car to pay for progress on another. I worked for a shop that did this (I didn't know when I was hired, and I quite as soon as was financially feasible.) The owner had several (4-6) builds that should have been 4-6 month projects, but had stretched them for years and years by fluffing up invoices for more money and overstating part / paint / etc time frames. The owner was over-extended financially so by billing the customers (these were out of state customers) for work not yet performed he could "kick the can" down the road a little longer. For example - a custom build that has hand-made/custom body panels, updated/custom engine, crazy paint & interior, etc - yes that build can take years. However, a "common" classic / custom car that isn't getting all that kind of work - and is 60-90 percent complete looking that has been there for years - that is a warning sign. A common excuse is for the owner/estimator to say "the owner ran out of money" or "they can only afford xxxx dollars every so many months so we wait with their ability to pay" is probably not a great shop. Any good shop won't let a car just sit taking up space for a owner's financial convenience, and at least 70% of the time I have heard that - the shop is milking cash from an owner who isn't local. Don't add any value to a shop because they do "magazine / TV" builds or work. I have done tons of magazine/TV work - and these builds are never as nice as they look in the pictures. This type of work is always rushed, on an extreme budget, and using whatever parts they can get for free/discounted from their advertisers. While it is neat to do - it isn't an accurate judge on the quality of the shop. Look at what they are doing when you are there, don't be star struck by a bunch of magazine articles framed on the walls. Also, any shop that doesn't want you to see what is in progress is probably one to be avoided. Actual craftsmen/women at good custom car shops take great pride in their work (as should the owner/service writers) and will be more than happy to show you. The last shop I worked at was a very, very good one - and we regularly had people (both prospective customers, and photographers, tourists, enthusiasts, car even pre-tours, etc) that wanted to see the work. Luckily the front desk employee would show them around so not to disturb us doing the work. Take a look at what is in the shop. Nice tools/equipment generally mean well paid employees. Well paid employees generally are more apt to do better work. This isn't 100% always the rule - but correct enough to warrant consideration. Nice, clean shops with nice, clean equipment is a good thing. If the shop can't keep it clean, organized and the employees can't take care of their equipment - how well are they going to treat your car? When it comes to electrical - this is a biggie. I specialized in this, and still do work by "request" in this arena. If you are having electrical work done - and they are using wire nuts, insulated cheap crimp connectors , low-quality wire (like copper clad aluminum...) and/or disorganized "rats nest" style wiring - you don't want them to work on your car. I can't count how many cars I have worked on that were damaged (fire/heat) or unsafe due to poor quality electrical work. It isn't hard to do quality electrical - nor is it that much more expensive. The automotive environment is reasonable hostile to electrical stuff - so wire nuts, cheap crimp connectors, and crappy wire quality will fail due to temperature swings, vibration, etc. Since your KITT has so much aftermarket electrical components - make sure to discuss this with the shop in detail. Even if that isn't what they are doing - they need to know. Especially for under dash style work - like a/c. Have them document what works /doesn't work with you in person - and give a brief overview of the stuff so they have an idea of the layout. Given what I have seen in the videos - anyone doing a lot of work under/around that dash will eventually unintentionally probably unplug/disconnect something, lol. Since A/C is probably high on your list - don't skimp out. The guy in this video had it right - given the age of the car and the in-op status of the A/C you are best to replace basically all the components (compressor, lines, condenser, dryer, orifice, evaporator.) Any contamination from sitting open, or if the compressor self-destructed - there will be contaminates in the system. No amount of "flushing" will get it all out. Any shop that does good a/c work will have a reasonably modern a/c service machine. If they drag out something that looks like it was from 1962 with broken gauges - not the guys you want on the job. Using quality components will obviously improve a/c performance and longevity. Cheap, rebuilt parts store compressors aren't worth the headache. As far as aftermarket a/c kits - I have installed dozens and dozens of Vintage Air and Classic Auto Air kits and they all perform/work well. If a shop quote seems too cheap - then it probably is. Many, many shops fall into the dishonest practice of quoting low to get the car there - and then when it is apart they amend / charge way more. They know you are more than likely/forced to approve it as the car is at their shop, and in pieces so they "have you by the balls." I would trust a shop that says "We don't know how long it will take/what it will cost - but we will update you regularly" then one that says "It is xxx dollars, won't be a problem, no issues" when it comes to dealing with "custom" cars. Book times don't apply for custom cars. On your KITT for example - I would be okay with "book time" on power train / paint & body - but anything electrical/under-dash/interior - book time isn't going to be accurate and I guarantee you will be paying more than quoted. Honest /accurate billing discussion is a very good indicator of the quality of the shop. Sorry for the book post - but just want you to be a little careful when selecting a shop.

KITT is looking great! Adding AI interactivity to it will be amazing, especially when they get the voice dialed in. The front LED swap really made a big difference in making it look original. And I don't believe the guy at the AC shop who said he used to work on KITT cars, then he used to just drive them around, why he lying to us like that LOL 😆

Brilliant! The AI Kitt and the video screen graphics on a commodore are a golden touch. I got chills! LOL I think if you keep the prompts shorter for the AI they might make more sense. This makes me want to do all this with my absolute zero dollars of investment LOL. At least I can live vicariously thru you. "This is just amazing!" Great work! PS: you might want to look into some car parts for police vehicles. With all those electronics, a separate battery, or bigger, might be needed to avoid electrical failures, and for sure a bigger alternator if no separate lithium battery. 🏁

You did an awesome job with KITT, Peri! Enjoy driving it. Quick question, does the dash speedo work, and if not, is that on the list to fix? It looked like the tach was. And make sure you can fit a baby seat in the back. Baby Fractic has to go with dad!

I'm almost (completely) jealous of the sheer amount of determination you do justice to your projects, everything i do seems half-arsed in comparison and you inspire me to do better.. God help us all if you get a Delorian.. ;)

Would be very cool with Tesla-like cameras that auto activate the scanner and scanning sound when someone approaches KITT as a proximity warning and plays a security animation on the monitors, and if the person doesn’t leave, to have KITT talk to them. I hope you a hid a separate UPS backed up battery and tracking GPS inside - unfortunately that car will be a theft magnet.

I recently just ran into your channel on my KZbin feed. Love what you do with your retro museum in your house, but this car build just flooded me with memories of watching knight rider, A-team and others. Thanks for your work. Keep it up. thanks, a fan.

I would of put smoked glass behind the TV bezels. That's to make it more authentic when tapping on them (like a CRT) and prevent the screens from accidentally being broken again in the future by fans. That glass surface could help hold those screens a bit better than those screws too. Your project is coming along greatly btw. Cheers

Knight Rider as all die hard fans know ran from 1982-1986 so for that guy to claim he worked on the original back then, he'd have to have been at least 18 at the time, which would make him at least 55 years old today. U less he dyedps his hair black he looks more like a 40 year old than a 55 year old guy.

Great to see K.I.T.T. at Vasquez Rocks - I can't think of a more '80s TV place, and I'm sure the real show had at least several episodes filmed there! 😋

Incredible work man. The detail in everything that you do it's amazing. Pity you can't get a delorean and convert it to BTTF version with the same dedication when your finished with Kitt and make them have a race. Love your work ❤

Excellent video, and the car is looking beautiful! But please don't make that car electric, the roar of the engine is part of the charm and its history! If you want to be more environmentally friendly perhaps investigate a biofuel like ethanol? I mean, just my 2c, after all it's your car!

I remember when KITT bragged that he had 2 terabytes of storage capacity. Back in the 80's that would have been unheard of, but it's funny how that would be no where near what would be needed to have a "sentient" Ai in your car.

I'm glad everything turned out well after the state it arrived in. It looks a million times better after all the work you've done. It looks like you're leaving it parked in your driveway. Please be careful of burglars and vandals. When you have an interesting car some people will damage it for no reason other than they're jerks.

So cool, I never ever noticed how funky that passenger side dash was as a kid... are there any shots of it from the TV show without the huge point into the passenger's chest area? Now you have to raid "the back area" where that guy told you the other ones are.
