Our first school computers were PETs and I learned BASIC on them. I'm still a developer today! Thanks PET!
@crewsayer
@crewsayer 4 жыл бұрын
Early my first year of high school my math class had 1 week in the computer lab. It was all PET 2001 machines, the first computer I ever touched. They said we could take a class in computer science the next year. I was hooked. I convinced my parents to get me a VIC-20 for Christmas, and within a couple months I had written a video game that used every scrap of memory (partly because I didn't understand array variables and wrote my own code to do the same thing) By summer the C64 came out, and a price war drove the cost of them way down in the USA (I'm in Canada). My dad actually drove me over 3 hours to the USA where we got a C64 along with a 1541 drive 1702 monitor and 1525 printer. It was all on sale, but still cost a lot. I'm really glad my parents were willing to invest in me like that. It paid off.

When I was about 13 I went on a "computer summer camp" where attendees took part in programming challenges after learning basic skills in BASIC (I already knew BASIC as my father made me learn it the year prior before I was allowed my first computer, a ZX Spectrum). There was a mish-mash of different computers at our disposal to write our solutions on like a few Apple IIs, a couple of Tandys and a single CBM PET that I commandeered every time and considered "mine" due to me being on the higher rungs of the programming skills ladder. So whenever I see the word "PET" I am reminded of those fond but super-geeky days at "Computer Camp" back in the '80s, the best decade to grow up in EVER, full stop. ;-) Oh, and that awesome angular "PET" look is mirrored in the design of Kenner's 1979 Star Wars Electronic Battle Command (which I had, along with Merlin, and Astro Wars as I previously mentioned).- Coincidence? I think not! Anywho, this one time, at Computer Camp...
@BCThunderthud
@BCThunderthud 4 жыл бұрын
A friend and I used to go to this computer lab at a local university and use the PETs to try writing games, we also played some Zork and Eliza on a printer terminal they had. He got a Vic 20 not long after and went on to be a software engineer, I got a ZX81 and hardly touched another computer for 15 years.
@TheOneTrueSpLiT
@TheOneTrueSpLiT 4 жыл бұрын
@@BCThunderthud I only went to computer camp that once and I think it was in Cumbria or near about, not that we ever left premises (that I think was a boarding school as we slept in small dorms) other than to go swimming in a nearby river or a lake, so maybe it was the Lake District, I've had 5 strokes since so whos knows! Unbelievably, I used a C64 for the first time recently, and a virtual one at that and before I was allowed my first Spectrum I used my mate's ZX80 a couple of times and was awestruck by it. I too went on to be a software engineer for what was GEC Avionics (now BAE SYSTEMS) where I wrote the systems in the HUDs in C-17, F-5 and EuroFighter, the HUDWAC for F-16, TRN for Tornado GR4 during Gulf War Part One and the fly-by-wire for Boeing 777 airliner. I don't think I was ever going down any other path once I got my Speccy and despite my father getting it over an Atari 2600 or similar to prevent my just using it to play games all I did was write games on it and nearly had a "Paintbox" and a 3D Modelling system published that I wrote on my QL.
@TheOneTrueSpLiT
@TheOneTrueSpLiT 4 жыл бұрын
@Richard Kelbe Yes, my father was a Senior Systems Engineer and didn't want me using a computer just to play games, hence why I had to learn BASIC from books and literature from his work and he would regularly test me to ensure it was all sinking in. This was in vain however as, as soon as he got my first Spectrum, he also got Hungry Horace and Planetoids, and I spent most my time on it typing in games from Sinclair User and alike or writing my own games, both original ideas and arcade clones. So when I came to study Computer Science at secondary school I knew more about computing than the teacher who was in fact one of the PE teachers who had to learn CS and the curriculum over the summer holidays and I would often put him to shame! I then progressed to taking Computer Science at O'Level, A'Level and HND before starting at GEC Avionics in 1987 (I think) and specialising in real-time embedded systems for military and civil aviation for 20 years as per my reply to BCThunderhud.

There was a chess game for the Commodore PET before there was a Commodore PET. It was originally written for the KIM-1, a single-board computer that Chuck Peddle developed earlier to, among other things, show off the capabilities of the chips made by MOS Technology (later Commodore Semiconductor Group). The KIM-1 was largely the basis of the original PET 2001 mainboard, and the chess program for the KIM-1 was readily adapted to the PET (which allowed the game to have a graphical interface of sorts, rather than needing a physical chess board for the human player to keep track with).

So awesome! I learned to program Basic on my Atari 800 at home and the Commodore PET at school in 8th grade! Never ran a single business application. Spent time changing code in a pac-man clone to add a life when you died instead of subtracting one, and learned that if you ran the program, then told it to "break", listed the program and then continued it, you could keep moving pac-man around eating the periods in the code while the ghosts chased you. So silly and yet so fun!

Nice vid... For a better PET feel, instead of RetroPie, you should consider BMC64. Still runs on the Pi, but without 90% of the Linux to go with it. Just boots right into your Commodore of choice. I have that in my C64 case and from power to READY, it's about 5 seconds. (There are drawbacks tho. No WiFi with BMC64 currently, so you will be using the SD card to transfer disk/tape images.)

I love your (and your wife's) passion for the subject, your music, your delivery, and your production values. You're both always super-entertaining and it's great to watch others that share my passion and nostalgic memories for the subject. I have one request, however. Can we get more of the squeaky screws? Adriana, my 4 year old daughter is obsessed with those, and I'm always being told to rewind whenever she hears it. I've literally lost count of the number of times she's said "again," which is Adriana-code for rewinding and hearing those screws for the zillionth time. Okay, two requests. Any chance we can get some remixes of Frozen Memories? That's my favourite track of yours by far. Keep safe, and keep up the fantastic work - both of you!

I saw a listing on eBay for one already printed and the seller did list where you can download and print your own. Yours looks 1000% better then what that person was selling. I have the files and I think its a cool project. I am still learning how to us my CR-10S and I have to start learning how to draw in 3D because I have my own projects to work on but first I need to become familiar with using the printer and I have the 1541 Mini to finish, I have the badge and bottom done and am making a 2nd attempt in doing the bottom because the vents curled up may have something to do with the bed temp not really sure but I hope to have that issue sorted because I really want to have a 1541 Mini even though I may never use it its just cool to look at but knowing me I will put it to use.
