I floss every day now, in the morning and at night before brushing my teeth, I then brush my teeth the best I can, I take my time on each tooth. I then use a tongue scraper and gently wash my checks and roof of my mouth with a soft brush. I then use mouthwash and swish and push it through my teeth, and twice a week I use a medicated mouth wash salvco. I then wait 15 min before I drink water. 👍🏼 don’t give up just do the best you can and have regular check ups so the dentist can cover where you missed and help you on your way to an awesome regime. I also recommend a water pik for hard to reach areas 👍🏼

Just recently went to exam by dentist and a cleaning by hygienist. Both gave me a glowing report. Yay. Even gums went from over 5 mm to less than 4 mm. As she’s said it they didn’t “ grow “ back but they “ firmed “ up as she put it.

I was diagnosed with this while in Spain. Dentist measured 3-4-5mm pockets, but its difficult to stay on top of in the UK. My dentist didn't even care. They didn't check the pocket sizes and didn't even clean and scale my teeth properly. I am overdue now by 3 months. Trying to find another dentist, but its so difficult in the UK.

@@ultrarunner0476 The NHS is very bad in the UK and it is almost impossible to find affordable dental care. NHS dentists are extremely rare and tend to cut corners (not doing the work they should be doing), because of government policies on their funding, and so the patient suffers. I was a student and had to use NHS. It was an awful experience, but thankfully I can afford to go private now. The NHS do not carry out proper periodontal maintenance and had I not had the procedure done previously in Spain, I would not have known the difference. It was actually in Spain where the dentist picked up on the periodontal problems I was experiencing (Spain are very good in terms of dentistry). When I returned to the UK, the dentist did not seem interested in the slightest. They booked me an hour and half appointment for a periodontal clean, but simply gave me a scale without a polish and I was in and out within less than 20 minutes. I written a complaint to the manager, but eventually took it up with a lawyer as the dentist in question told me that me teeth were in perfect condition when they were not and I needed several fillings replacing, as well as a small cavity in my wisdom tooth. The NHS system works like so: Band A: £23.80 Band B: £65.20 Band C: £282.80 Say, if an NHS patient needs two or three fillings, they will only be required to pay the Band B charge once, and also only entitled to amalgam fillings. However, if the patient is a private patient, the dentist receives a much higher rate x the amount of fillings he may need. I have had work done in Mexico, Spain and the UK, and UK is by far the worst of the three. However, private care in the UK is better than the NHS, but still a long way to go to match countries like Spain, where their government puts a huge emphasis on dental health, especially periodontal disease. Dental care is also far more affordable in Spain and Mexico - even cheaper than the NHS. Sorry for the essay, but hope it gives you some insight into our system in the UK.

Which sucks because it probably sidnt fix as much as it should have and I may need to redo my 1st treatment. Idk, I have my second appointment in a week and a half so remind me and I'll let you knlw what the dentist says. I am imagining that I am going to be going to a periodontist as well, I really dont want this to progress. I will say that after the first treatment, there was a noticeable difference in my teeth, they looked better but they have become more sensitive. I still think its worth it, even if it doesnt fix everything. Always better to try and fail then not try at all. I'm only in the beginning stages of this, so I think I have a better chanve than someone who is in a later stage

They said they can do my first deep cleaning in one appointment and it will take a few hours. Is that common or okay?? They saw I have generalized bone loss but that it’s not a lot and gave me no measurement. I have had two teeth pulled in the past not sure if that contributed. Hello @aaliyah5644, I’m a hygienist. Sometimes a deep cleaning can take a couple of hours, considering a couple of factors. If there is a lot of calculus above and below the gums ( how much calculus is under the gums is checked through x rays), how deep are the pocket depths ( measurements based on mm) and are they through out the mouth? Another factor is the insurance, most of insurances that I have seen so far demand us to do deep cleanings in two appointments or they will no pay for it( I know, it is ridiculous but it’s their rules and we have to follow them! And definitely the antibiotic will help fight the gum infection and help gums heal faster than without it. You are doing the right thing for the health of your gums and teeth, always take care of them so you can use your natural teeth as long as you live. Good luck

At moderate and severe perio, are they too reversable? With scaling, and three month checks, can resorption of bone decrease, and in fact regrow? I've seen the effects of laser therapy as well.

Hi Doctor, I have had inflamed and receding gums for 5 years. No bone loss, apparently no pockets. But recently I had so much pain, I went to see a periodontist, she took a sample from the mouth, no bad bacteria under the microscope. She took a deeper sample from the deeper gums. And offered a couple sessions of 30 min cleaning with a laser (with hydrogen peroxide). I am in France, I don't know what kind of laser that is, but apparently it is not the same as 1 hour 30 minute SRP session. In the meantime, I have received the results, and I have in my gums high concentration of Campylobacter, Fusobacterium and Parvimonas. So is it like you said in the video there must be maybe just one pocket somewhere, and it is early perio? And not just gingivitis? Do you recommend classic SRP or that laser (30 minute cleaning)? I am in France and can't find objective information. Thank you :)

If someone has a few 5 mm pockets is a deep cleaning of the whole mouth required? I went to a new dentist that wants to do an entire deep cleaning. That just doesn’t sound right. Also the dentist only told me after doing the perio probe that I have gum disease and left. The hygienist then casually said after telling me that I had to get a deep cleaning that I had a few 5 mm pockets and bone loss. Why was this not explained more by the dentist and all of this shown to me on the X-rays? I have no problem getting whatever needs to be done for the 5 mm but it seems like they want to treat all of my teeth like that. I would like to get my previous dentist’s opinion ( only left because of a move) but I’m on a wait list for an appointment. Hope the pockets won’t get worse until then also I will be behind on a regular cleaning. With this new dentist it’s either deep clean or nothing apparently.

In the meantime, take really good care of your teeth at home.. brushing twice a day at least maybe even three times, use a water flosser or floss, and I would even incorporate a mouthwash as well. @@dentalelle Thank you for your response. Instead of waiting for an appointment with the out of state dentist, I decided to go ahead and get a second opinion in this area. This dentist did even more x rays than the deep cleaning dentist. The perio charting was also done. I was given a regular cleaning. The only area of concern was ONE deep pocket and bone loss beside my bridge. The dentist showed me this area on the x ray and explained it well and referred me to a periodontist for this issue. All other pockets were 3’s for the charting. No problems in any other area.

Dentalelle, What I'm confused about is how can you get bone loss when the person/customer doesn't have periodontal disease or gingivitis gum disease? Periodontal disease means that the plague, bacteria and tartar are below the gum level below 3mm but that would show signs of your gums bleeding when flossing and show signs of gingivitis? What I'm confused about is how can bone loss keeps occurring eating away at the jaw bone even if you don't have gingivitis gums bleeding and all your gum levels are at 3mm? Getting Prophylaxis cleanings every 6months and still having bone loss occurring doesn't make sense but its common any reasons why?

hey dr thanks for the info. Am only 24 and my dr said i have severe peridontal disease i dont know in such a young age. My teeth looks health but in one teeth i had a 9mm i think its number 3 or 4 and my lower 4 teeth are loose. Iam scared because the dr was like i might loose my teeth. I had gone in that dental office because on my bottom teeth i have one space between number 27 and 26 and in upper teeth i have 2 spaces between number 8 and 9 so i had gone there to check whether i can have braces and the dr was like right now you are not a candidate of braces he was like i think i will refer you to a periodontist and then they can treat you there and they can decide when you will have braces. so i asked him so they will help me have my teeth normal again and he said that question i cant answer i dont think your teeth will be normal again. Iam confused because i have an appointment this coming monday in that office and the dr told the hygienist she will be doing laser bacteria reduction on me and perionscale root pln 1_3th quad which will cost me 450 dollars. But isnt the dr the one who is supposed to do that instead of hygienist. And if he is going to refer me to a periodontist why are they doing the laser reduction on me in their office. I dont want to waste my money please help me. Hi Ruby, thank you for your message. This is a tricky situation. First of all - I would express your concerns to your dentist. If you don't speak up, they don't know what you're thinking. In some areas the hygienist CAN perform the laser but if you would feel more confident him doing it, please speak up. The hygienist SHOULD have seen the 9mm pocket, that's her job...and from what you told me, she is confused. You could always go to another dentist to get a second opinion? It sounds like the hygienist and dentist are not on the same page and they NEED to be. BUT..the good news is...your periodontal disease can be helped or at the very least maintained. I would need to personally see your radiographs to know for sure. You are young BUT if you haven't taken care of your teeth, this is how periodontal disease happens. If you are a smoker, it can make periodontal disease much worse. From what you have told me, you need to see a Periodontist every 3 months to save those teeth before its tooth late. The Periodontist does 'special cleanings' under the gums to clean those pockets to save the teeth. Sometimes, the teeth cannot be saved if the disease is so far gone.
