Thank you for purchasing Periphery's self titled debut long play record, Periphery! On this album, you'll hear heavy metal; a genre of music from the future! Be dazzled by distortion, be bombarded by bass beats, and Djitter-bug to Djent! We're sure you'll enjoy such finger-popping tunes as Light, Insomnia, and my own personal favorite, Ragtime Dandies! These songs and more are played by our talented troop of traveling troubadours, featuring the likes of Misha, the electric light bulb, Mansoor, who was voted the twenty-third most influential person in Brown Magazine and can be found on the cover of this month's Mocha Emporium! And look, up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Trent Reznor, no, it's Jake Bowen and his seven strings of wonder! Rounding off the trio of strings-men is Alex Bois, the man with the arms of steel and the arse of a skunk! On drums is Matt Halpern, the only man who can break three cymbals with one swing of the stick! Our lead singer will be Spencer Sotelo, who's voice goes up like an angel... and down like a wounded ox... Last, but not least, is Tom Murphy; providing the rumble from down under and is the only member of Periphery decent enough for the institution of marriage. Experience heavy metal at it's finest! Periphery, LOVE THAT SHIT!

Sound Out The Braille That's OK, I just happen to have a background in classical music, so I have a trained ear for distinguishing sub-genres and classifications. The Progressive aspect is definitely more apparent than the Experimental aspect. It's not Björk level, but it's there. What I really like about the Djent genre is that all the bands sound different. They all have a unique defining factors about them. Some are very Progressive, some Math, some Jazzy, some Electronic, some just plain sound like Meshuggah. But in the end, there's something for everyone. I think that's just great.

@@twinny_mi My first contact with Periphery was actually Blood Eagle in 2020, and I vividly remember being repulsed by the amount of screaming there. Now I can appreciate it a lot more, but my second listening experience in October was Satellites, which was far easier to digest and appreciate. Then followed Lune and Reptile and all the rest of P3 and P4 - I'm currently listening to P1 and the Juggernauts one by one since I haven't explored them much, and then i'll have completed the discography I think. To be fair, Blood Eagle is still too aggressive for me and Spencer kind of swallows a lot of words there, but I'll easily listen to songs like that and Church Burner if I get to hear 7 more amazing songs on the record. Nowadays Satellites, Reptile and Lune are my top 3, perhaps even among all songs I listen to as a whole. It's not a surprise that Periphery is my favorite band. It's interesting that both of us left Christianity though. I've never replaced the love I feel for life and humanity, it's just that the beauty of this world is found in fairy tales as much as it is in heavy metal. The mindset that this genre is essentially evil is something that plagued me for too long.

What's unbelievable is how OBSESSED with "scene" and "genre" so many of us are. Clean vocals don't fit in to our "established hardcore scene" so as soon as a sung pitch is heard we turn our untrained ears off. "Oh but it's music, it's subjective, I can say whatever I want and spread it to the world." You know what? No you can't. Fuck that. I didn't spend 5 years, 16 hours a day (2-4 of which were practicing), at 21 credit hours a semester, getting two music degrees, to be told my hard work is "pussy shit" or that "the last album was better" by kids who bring their guitar to high school with them and call themselves musicians. If you don't like a style of music then say "I don't like it" and move on with your life. You literally have no right to make any claims about another artist's work other than "I like it" or "I don't like it". Now if you'd like to analyze it theoretically, or even historically, be my guest. You'll find it's far more complex, unique, and intricate than 99% of the bullshit we consider "music" today (although not quite as much as most art-music post 19th century); and I think the fact that progressive rock bands like Periphery are trying to bridge the current, VAST, gap between art music and popular music is pretty god damn respectable.

No www.reddit.com/r/progmetal/comments/1igvvz/no_matter_how_hard_i_try_i_cant_seem_to_get_into/cb6qjcw See that, Misha, the guitarist/main songwriter of this, is actually mature, unlike you. He realizes this and that it's not important nor does it judge your value. So please, grow the fuck up or get the fuck out, you pretentious, self-indulged sack of shit. Music *IS* subjective and anyone who claims it isn't needs to pull their head out of their ass and breath the cool, fresh air or reality.
@KDowah10 жыл бұрын
TheRatSquid Congrats on missing the whole point of the comment. He/she is in no way saying music isn't subjective, they're saying that to label a song or band shit when you don't even have any actual knowledge of music and songwriting is flat out ignorant. End of story. You can like it and dislike it, but your opinion on musical quality from a theoretical perspective holds no merit whatsoever unless you actually understand how and why it works. You don't get to critique a book if you don't understand what most of the words mean.
@Muvoikis10 жыл бұрын
Music, to a listener, is subjective. You may have noticed I never said it wasn't, I was only irritated at how some immature people use this as a means for judgement and labeling. The composition factor, however, does in fact involve a lot of objective concepts, which give the art, as a whole, depth beyond what is simply "heard". Believing music is only subjective and judging it based solely on what you hear is like assuming a five star steak will taste bad because it's brown, and you don't like that color.

@@fornever5656 How can you say this in 2020, when Spencer has greatly improved on his vocals? Periphery has nearly 400,000 listeners on Spotify, and millions of listens? Like I think that if anything the band has gained a lot more fans. And plus, the members of the band have kept Spencer in the band despite him apparently acting like a jackass on tour for PI album came out. (from an interview with them I forget where it is.) But their dynamic has changed a lot over the years. If you look at documentaries of their recent albums they get along pretty well and in fact Spencer does vocals last *most* of the time when recording. So to say that this band sucks now because they focus on Spencer is wrong. I saw in an interview with Misha that he still has old riffs he wrote back in Haunted Shores that he wants to make into more songs in the future (I think it was referencing Sentient Glow.) They got their own record label now, they left Sumerian in 2016 and have many different ways of making money. Spencer has his own project with Matt that's under the label that's made some waves. For Spencer to be the factual downfall of this band is untrue. And from my knowledge Periphery never went through a downfall? From an opinion standpoint, I can understand why people may not enjoy his vocals and I respect that, but if it bothers you that much don't listen to the band. if you came into the Icarus Lives comment section to say that it sounds kinda petty.

Meshuggah is probably my favorite Metal band of all time and Jen's has the harshest or vocals yet I love listening to Daniel/Ashe of Tesseract sing their B4's and C#5's, clean preferably. Clean vocals can be just as epic.
@dumithegreat38929 жыл бұрын
+Jake Hall Idk, Tom's scream-singy belting technique can get quite harsh. Same goes for Sempiternal era Oliver Sykes and the Meshuggah vocalist.

Misha has actually been working on a new recording of this song but I don't know if he ever finished it or plans to. I think he said that he feels completely uninspired by this album and feel like working on it just takes time off from working on new stuff.

Periphery full set live in brixton HQ filmed 3 years ago posted by peripheryfan498 was such a good recording. Spencers vocals are so raw and heavy sounding but yet they play with so much emotion. It realy took me to a far away place to where the meaning of true love lies within our hearts. Awesome set!

@00Kie0010 жыл бұрын
At around 2:00 - 2:10 If you listen VERY closely (You probably need good headphones) you can hear faint hum that's to the pitch of an Ab. Kind of sounds a little like what happens when cell phones interfere with pickups. It's easier to hear on the rests when they aren't playing any notes. It seems to go on through the rest of the section but it's harder to hear when Spencer comes in. Anyone else notice this?

I love seeing all the people's comments about how they think this band sucks. You're seriously going to judge a whole band based off of ONE song just because it's the highest viewed? This whole album was written instrumentally, lyrics came WAY after. Periphery is one of my favorite bands and this is personally my LEAST favorite song by them. I actually NEVER listen to it. I came to this video to give it another shot. Lookup anything from their second album which was written with all members.

TOTALLY AGREE, Racecar, Letter Experiment, and Ow My Feelings are gods compared to this song. This song is probably their least unique song of this album.
