This is my reaction/review for Periphery's album 'Periphery V: Djent Is Not A Genre.' I covered all three of the singles on the channel, Wildfire being my favorite. This is definitely one of my most anticipated for this year. What track(s) is/are your favorite?

I still think Dracul Gras is the sleeper hit of the album, song tells such a story, even if the vocals were stripped away it still would.

Spencer and the band are massive 1975 fans. Also Spencer has a side band in this style called Nik mystery. Jake and Misha have an electronic project called 4 secs ago, which is also in that vein. I think silhouette wasn't a track for the fans, but for the band personally...it has something thematically and lyrically that the band wanted to have and I think it might have a deeper meaning.

"Thanks Nobuo" is a tribute to Nobuo Uematsu, who composed a lot of the Final Fantasy music as well as other video game music. Hopefully that puts it into context a little more, but I really enjoyed your reaction to this roller coaster ride of an album

Wax wings is a truly beautiful song but I have to say Thanks Nobuo really resonated with me with the backing vocals as a call back to one of my favourite periphery tracks with the lyric 'you're shining and it shows' beautiful way to end the album and each song gets better with every listen.

Wax Wings, Dying Star and Thanks Nobuo are my favourites. I love the outro of Thanks Nobuo. I really don't mind that long outro at all. It gives you time to let everything you just heard sink in and reflect over. Silhouettes is pretty cool and unexpected. Dracul Gras and Everything is fine is really good as well! But like all other songs with Periphery, it grows on you the more you listen. They have such a unique sound and really interesting ways to write their tunes. So inspiring bands and musicians individually as well!

If you like the outro you would really enjoy the music of Brian Eno, it reminds me of his Ambient album series. It's some of my favorite recordings. I'm with you on the contemplative nature of the outros... Love them🤘

Picking a top 3 is nearly fucking impossible but I can muster a loose top 5 with a firm #1. 1. Dracul Gras 2. Zagreus 3. Everything is fine 4. Wildfire 5. Wax Wings Periphery did what I’ve been waiting for them to do again since P2; make me love an entire album as a whole specifically for the way it flows. Really feels like a celebration of their entire discography but with a lot of growth. Hard to put into words, just another Periphery W.

I absolutely love this album with all my heart. I followed Mischa since his Bulb days, and this entire album has just been a visitation of EVERYTHING he and Periphery has ever worked on, demos or finished tracks. As a Final Fantasy fan, AND a Select Difficulty enjoyer as well - the closer track is a testament of their love for their craft, and for what may lie for Periphery in the future. Not their magnum opus, quite - but among the best tracks they have ever put out.

hi rachelle! i just wanted to say thanks for your in depth thoughts on all these :) i wanted to comment to see if you have had any changes in opinion on silhouette/dying star and that middle section of the album? i felt similarly to how you do in this reaction and discussion in my own first listen , but after so much exploration, rly listening to the instrumentals and really letting the music take me on its journey and letting my expectations go i have truly come to love both of those songs on the same level i love all the rest of them. so i was just wondering if you’ve had any change in feelings like i have since you published this video :0 i thjnk silhouette is an emotional masterpiece and i thjnk the way it uses the style change to shift your focus on the subject matter to something way more personal about the band is rly effective for me. i also think dying star is one of the most emotionally impactful songs i’ve ever heard- it’s so comforting and good feeling for me and the way it sinks you into the melody by the end is just to die for. i always feel like i go away from that song wanting to belt the last melody over and over. final comment- thoughts on thanks nubuo since this video!?? it’s become my FAVORITE on the album by FAR. it’s such an emotional touchstone for me and it rly captures the bands essence and really speaks to me as a track, and i love the long outro of dracul gras as it resets your mind and takes you away from the fantasy vampire world and brings you back to a clean slate, where thanks nubuo can paint irs completely different picture as a finale that feels way more set in the real universe. that guitar melody just feels like the entire universe summed up in one line and it is so powerful. any change of heart on the final ambient outro too? i have come to love it so much. i think it’s a time to just reflect and truly let everhting in your mind and body melt away and i think its always a rly meditative time for me when i’ve finished the album or just the song. it’s a time to let your mind be still and let the music just fill your body and i think when you’re on a first listen it’s hard to let that happen cus you’re trying to analyze it but as i’ve listneed more just to listen i’ve realized why irs there and how meditative and magical it is as a final moment of the song. i was wondering if you feel the same way about it? or if you still get bothered by your mind wandering. i think if you do, i would recommend trying to just let your mind go and let the music take over your soul and headspace, and distance yourself from idle thoughts. anyway thanks for reading this if you do!! sory it’s so long i’m just very curious to see if your thoughts have changed and how you think abt my views

I still stand by what I said in the review. regardless of what the tracks are individually, they definitely kill the momentum that the album was building up until that point. I don't think they're momentum tracks regardless of what they provide as stand alone tracks, which nothing has really changed regarding what I said in the video. I thought I'd like the tracks, I like them. overall this album really isn't something that's going to cut it for my top 10 this year. it's still something I'll revisit in full throughout the year and something I enjoy more when it's chopped up into smaller pieces, but as a full piece I don't think it's that cohesive.
@norkbork
@norkbork Жыл бұрын
@@RachelleReacts i suppose that’s fair :> i really think it’s a wonderful personally and i think the momentum carries throughout really nicely in a way that it takes you through so many peaks and valleys of emotion and with how long each song is it feels like a collection of experiences to me at least that are put together in a really beautiful way:0 idk how to explain it more than that i really just don’t mind the momentum at all and every song keeps me happy and engaged and pulls me into it i think something for me that this album kinda illustrated for me is the whole concept of it- djent is not a genre, and that periphery’s music is so much more than just metalcore djent stuff like their first album and especially since p4 they have incorporated so so many new ideas and styles into what makes their sound theirs. bc of this i think the album p5 really exemplifies that and to me it’s one of the most refreshing to listen to experiences just because of how diverse it is and how nuanced and masterful they are in every avenue they explore within each song. to me it’s far more boundary pushing than your standard metalcore album that just keeps every song with the same type of sound- periphery did this for their first 3 albums but with p4 and now especially p5 they are really pushing the boundary of what it means to be djenty and i really respect and encourage that:0 and that doesn’t just mean adding string ensembles to underscore your metal music it means what style they play in what emotions they capture and what timbres they use or don’t use across each song. idk to me that’s what this album captures and that’s why i love it so much and once i was able to recognize that and let my viewpoint expand from just being a djent metalcore album and expecting something like p2 which you said is your fav i was able to truly enjoy it. i feel like you’re expecting something like p2 but periphery isn’t that band anymore (like silhouette the song explores), and that’s okay if u aren’t as into the new avenues they’re exploring but that’s just how i see it and it took that realization for me before i could truly enjoy it. i think that’s why the album name really does have a lot of significance even if it seems silly:0 also a final thing to add is that now that periphery isn’t just strung to sumerian records and has their own label, this is probably the direction their hearts wanted to go for a long time- i think you can see that desire since p3 and the transition album is like p4 but now p5 really shows how much they’ve grown as musicians and how open their minds are to not just writing p2 over and over again- i feel like they could easily do that but it’s just not where their hearts are tldr i wouldnt think of it as a traditional momentum-based metalcore album it’s more abt showcasing how much they encompass as a band now and taking you through tons of different emotional experiences and vibes and taking in that new perspective let me at least be able to enjoy it and simply let the music flow throughout the whole album in a rly rly nice way
