i learned how to build houses at Los Angeles Trade Tech. This is how we were taught. Also Larry Haun the Zen Master of residential construction came and gave us some secrets to the trade. These guys in this video are spot on. It should be mandatory in order to graduate with a high school diploma to acquire basic knowledge on building houses and auto repair....MANDATORY!!!

This HAS TO BE the BEST tutorial I've watched in the construction business. Definition of terms, visual demonstrations as well as discussion of why's and wherefor's is clear enough for anyone to understand. I love watching pros work, no matter what industry they're in. The efficiency, the confidence in what they're doing... It's impressive. My trade is metalwork these days, specifically gunsmithing, now that I'm retired from being a shooter... The way he glides around the job is exactly how I am in my shop, and how I was on the job before retirement. Keep up the good work. I came here because it's been a long time since I built a house, and my brother just enlisted me in remodeling his house. We both know how to do it, but he's the carpenter by trade... I'm the soldier. So I'm a bit rusty. I'll be framing windows on Thursday, so I better brush up on the lingo. I was trying forever trying to remember the names of the king studs until I remembered KZbin.

Great production, clean. One thing to note: The jack studs holding any header should always in my mind be full bearing to the beam member its supporting. the window liner should butt into the jacks. Framing the liners full length of the beam (headers) you are creating a swell point and crush point as the wood grain is flat the way you have framed it on the bearing point above the post. When using 2x materials for headers, pack 1/2 plywood between 2 of the 3 pieces to gain the 5.5 inches for your exterior walls. Another note. 2x8 Headers should always have 4 nails connecting the king studs on the sides to prevent roll of the header off of the posts once loaded with the roof.

In UK we use metric but in the old days of imperial we would stick to inches for things like framing. 2ft 6ins x 4ft would be 30 x 48. It's unambiguous. whereas mixing ft and ins often can be taken two ways.

Curious what your thoughts are about sloping the sill outward in case of an eventual leak. A lot of guys I come across say to slop the sill by 6 degrees, but that would complicate the flashing I'll be using in the end since I was planning on using the vinyl corners instead of flextape. I vastly prefer the idea of keeping everything straight and flush, but the outward slant definitely makes sense to me aswell.

38-year Carpenter here; as long as your top plate and bottom plate match in length with the layout transferred from one to the other, checking for square becomes unnecessary, because, as you already know, when you stand that wall up and plumb one end, that entire wall, every stud, every window opening and every door opening will turn out square! Hey guys as usual short clear and to the point. Lots of ways to do layout. Comment I noticed you pulled your jack stud layout to your top plate. I eliminate this to save the 'oops' nailed the king stud on the wrong side of the line😊 Also saw you pull your cripple layout to top plate...? Especially like adding information as to opening size. I give the crew r.o. header size jack size cripple and sill length. I get these measurements ahead of time by taking a stud laying out jack height. You can pull several window ro's from here lay out the sills and figure jack heights. On the sill layout I write each window number from the reference # on the print. Now my cutter has a very accurate cut list and can put all the window components together as a package. Header sill and Jack's are stocked above the top plates. Keep the vids coming... you guys have it 'nailed'

Good well made straight to the point video's. As a 71 year young still learning carpenter, in my opinion their is to much lumber in walls. You mentioned a second king stud, I think this space would be better served with insulation. I believe the cripples next to the jacks could be removed and replaces with L-70 leaving more room for insulation. Headers are to big for most openings. Its easier framing with a bigger sized headers but less energy efficient. Just my opinion.

When you yelled out " 31 1/2" times 4 Cripples" I'm sorry I laughed so hard and said " Come on man, They are called 'Disabled' now !!! LMAO. I know maybe it's not funny but it still was. Other than that thanks for the great info all the time.

bahaha oh yea, don't tell the "woke" people that framers are politically incorrect. They might demand that every framer go and erase the "C" on the framing and change it to "D"

Great Job! An extra little trick I picked up on Matt Risingers channel is to cut your cripples at a small angle so that water will have a tendency to go out rather than in. Props to the great content.
