FYI, Cry of the Carnarium does not create any triggered abilities, delayed or otherwise. "If a creature would die this turn, exile it instead." creates a replacement effect that lasts for the rest of the turn, and replaces a creature dying with that creature being exiled instead. Tip: triggered abilities always include "when", "whenever", or "at".

@@mreshadow I mean, if he wasn't aware that even creatures that died before Cry resolves get exiled then he would have sacrificed it anyway. Saying that because he was planning to rez the Bodyguard means he was cheating doesn't make sense. Yeah, if he was cheating he would make that play. But if he wasn't cheating then he also would have made that play. Him planning to dodge Cry of the Carnarium's exile effect to give himself a target for Ajani doesn't really inform us whether or not he knew that wasn't how the card worked.

mythic championship!!!! if you are playing at this level there is no room to make this error. this was a cheat plain and simple there was many proxy nexus of fates at the event also, as you can use nexus as a proxy if you cannot buy a card not in foil. this was a rule change about a year ago

@Kellen Smith It's in the Magic the Gathering Tournament Rules document, updated in April of 2018 with the release of the first buy-a-box promo card from Dominaria. It reads, "Section 3.4 (Proxy Cards): Foil versions of cards for which Wizards has never printed a non-foil version may now be issued a proxy by a judge if and only if that card would mark the deck." So, according to this rules change, you still are required to own the foil copies of Nexus of Fate in order to use it in tournament play, but the judge can require you to replace the foil copies with a proxy they provide if they so choose.
@Cindershadow
@Cindershadow 5 жыл бұрын
sweet i knew of the sort of rule but could not find the actual line in the long document. i just know i was seeing a few posts on twitter of people having proxies of nexus also, and i was pretty sure it stemmed from someone needing a replacement for a card but it was only in foil at the event, the stupid land that is a creature or something like that.

@cindershadow "if you are playing at this level there is no room to make this error" > same goes to his opponent. I´d say that it´s more important to actually know the cards you DO have in your deck, than the cards your opponent is running in his deck. Plus, there are judges there. All of them let this pass through. I think it would be VERY dumb for Marcio to attempt this on purpose, since with all the buzz, the feeds, reddit and youtubes, he knew this would be seen later on and may cost him his 50k/year he is not getting as a pro player. I dont want to take sides here, just stating that intention is not an easy thing to state in this particular move.

As for why Ikawa didn't call him out on it, it was a subtle cheat on Carvalho's part and could've gone over Ikawa's head since there's a lot more things he was likely keeping track of at the same time

I don't know Des. Normally I take your analysis as being accurate. In this case though, I have to give Marcio the benefit of the doubt, since this Cry is worded differently from cards before it which had a similar effect. The previous card(Flaying Tendrils) exile cards after the effect has taken place. It's the same in commander when a player casts a Merciless Eviction, and an opponent sacs all their critters in response, and they stay in the yard. Cry of the Carnarium just has a weird wording that we haven't seen before, and it is very easy to get it confused. I know he has a history, but this is probably a legitimate mistake.

Hey man, I just saw your video on the way to watching some arena stuff. You should show that video to a professional card magician. It's not just that 'mistake' he made but things like the way he picks up his card off the deck (via the table), the way he points (using his whole hand), that shuffle / squeezing the cards and the fact that his hand disappears under the table. It could be that these are all just innocent habits, which is why you should show it to a professional slight of hand artist to see what they think :-)

And thing is watch pro tourneys for about the last decade and they ALL do these things. I hate the habits of pro scene players, also how they want to short hand words and phrases and speed play. That leads to more errors and can tilt the odds in one direction or another. Pro MTG is as much about manipulating the environment of the game as it is actually playing the game.

Why doesn't magic just institute a system where at a certain level of play you have to play your games on a computer that forces you to play correctly? Like MTG Arena basically? You just give the tournament your decklist and they upload it. Prevents these shenanigans outright (and also legitimate mistakes- I could definitely see myself legitimately making this mistake, I have a bad tendency to not read the entire card, in ways that often fuck me up more often than help me.)

This is a very easy mistake to make even at the pro level so regardless of weather hes been found to have done shady things in the past, this particular instance has a high plausibility of it being a mistake. The fact that the other player didnt immediately catch it would indicate that even when you play the card, its a difficult delayed effect to remember.

These people play magic all day every day, and they're doing it professionally, so the mistake isn't forgivable. If a player was Disqualified for playing 4 foil nexus of fate in a deck as the only foil cards after refusing to use proxies, I think that the issue of card quality would be forced into admission by way of the results of an official investigation, and WOTC may be liable for damages because of their sale of a faulty good. The damages could include travel expenses, lodging, meals, entry fee, and there may be grounds for a share of the jack pot. BUT if this issue ever gets pushed, I fully expect WOTC to end paper magic and switch fully to Arena/Digital.

Looks like an unintentional mistake to me. Cry of the carnarium is very weirdly templated. I dont recall any swiper templated like that. It looks in the past actions of the turn and creates a prolonged effect. We had multiple red cards like that in the magic history that deals damage to creatures and the creatures that were dealt that damage got exiled if they would die. He probably expected same templating. It perfectly explains his actions. We are all human beings we do make presumptions and mistakes.

Cy of the Carnarium is a pretty unintuitive card, I would not be surprised if at a first read many (me included) would miss the clause that exiles creatures already gone in the graveyard earlier in the turn. On the other hand, if you are in a top-end tournament you are supposed to know what cards do, especially if you are playing those cards or have seen them multiple times.

I think it's more of a mistake than a cheat. Let's presume he did know the middle portion of the text. He wouldn't attempt to sac his dude. I've seen Izzet players shocking their own Phoenix when I play cry in an attempt to save them. It's pretty much barely any board advantages. Yes, it's a mistake and in a tournament like this, he will get a warning, not DQ. Sometimes, they play super fast and it's around 14 ... that's 2 rds before top 8 to top 16 placings... I'm sure he was nervous too. So yeah, he messed up... simple... If he had done this again on camera. Then he really might not know the ruling of that card. 2 warning based on the same ruling will get you auto match lost.

Pretty shitty that almost all Commander Legends foils are literally ineligible to officially play Magic. They should have to replace heavily foiled cards or compensate in some manner. Especially with how expensive collector boosters are and they were affected most heavily since almost the whole pack is foil.

so does this mean that if your only foil is Nexus of Fate (because you know ... the card can't NOT be foil) your cheeting because you bought 4 nexus's of fate?

Thats the thing, they have been quick playing, ie not step by stepping cards, short handing phrasing, etc, for at least a decade if not two. Pro MTG is as much about gaming the situation as it is actually getting lucky and pulling what you need. This is why MTGs pro scene is a joke.

Can't really talk about Carvalho, but his opponent not knowing, or worse, not keeping track, of how CotC works is far worse in my books. I mean, Carvalho is playing mono whtie, he is as brain damaged as mono red players, can you really expect him to be cheating in this case? (Also, seriously, he probably didn't know because since he is playing WW, he doesn't need to know how CotC works. He just knows his stuff die.) He might have cheated, but this feels like grasping at straws here.

Foil cards illegal? That’s just plain dumb I like those players that used cheap sleeves to see the top card if it was a flip card or special markings through the yellow dragon Shield matte

I think that regardless of whether or not it was intentional; is inconsequential to the fact that at the end of the day the result is that the actions taking were in direct contravention of the ruling of the the card interaction requirements stipulated by the rules of the game and the subsequent allowed outcome of the play pattern of events that transpired within that game - specifically that point in time on that given turn and the plays made inclusive of therein. In law - a judge will stipulate that the outcome an action taken, and the ruling made of it is still governed by the legislation and precedent pertaining to the context of the give situation; regardless of the defendant’s knowledge of these facts. For example: if you punch a guy in the face, even if you did not know that it is illegal to do so for whatever reason - you will still be charged for assault. “I did not know” is not a reasonable defence of your actions. Perhaps the governance of the games’ rules should closer reflect this fact? Food for thought.

I understand the history, but I've made this mistake on arena and thankfully the game knows where it goes. I've been playing since kamigawa. I make mistakes like this still. Granted never played at this level, I can see how the mistake is made. But still this could've been cleared up by a judge on the spot. Featured matches have judges right there watching the game. If 3 people miss it. 3 people miss it. Although continuing to invite a known cheater its bound for shit to happen. Read ur cards. Always be a judge. Fix the mistake or give the game loss.

@desolatormagic I think this is blatant cheating because he knows that the bodyguard is a KNIGHT card, which also gets the +2+2 buff from the History of Benalia, so that all looks very calculated to me.

This is part of why physical versions of card tournaments are shrinking. It is far harder to cheat like this in a tournament where the cards are digital, and the rules are handled by a bot. Certainly no 'plausible deniability'.

@@TravisArk But you can limit all of those by holding digital events in live venues where they can control the whole system running the game and even i'm sure do local games where it doesn't even connect to the internet so there wouldn't be disconnect issues

Okay-it's clear this youtuber doesn't play regularly. People shuffle their hand like that ALL THE TIME. I've done it for years, my stepdad does it-it's a habit among many MtG players, and that gives literally zero evidence or implication that that guy is cheating. Also, separate note; when the guy put that card into his graveyard and not exile-did that actually, like, change anything? Because if not, then why does it matter? If he had graveyard triggers or the like that relied on that card to proc, then I can agree. But you gave no such evidence in this video. Effectively, you did a nice job making a clickbait video on overreaction based on the fact that this guy apparently has cheated (but was never banned, I note) in tournaments. Nice job

Des! I just played against another infinite turns deck in arena! It uses lich’s mastery and the Boros ‘final fortune’ type card. Lichs mastery prevents them from losing the game due to it. They use miraris conjecture to get back final fortune and masterminds acquisition. They play the gates deck mana base and ramp, and use the archway angel to keep their life total ahead of aggro (and probably also gates ablaze) Infinite turn cancer doesn’t need nexus to work. This deck might not be as consistent as turbo fog idk I’ve only played it the once with the life gain deck.
@EvanFarshadow

It's really not near as consistent and requires a lot to keep working. Also easy to stop if you throw in a surprise Arcane Lighthouse in your deck and hold onto enchantment removal.
