I read The Deep this month too and fell deeply in love with it. I love how even though its short, The Deep doesn't feel short. It takes its time to develop and properly explore its themes and the central pain of Yetu and her people's history. I also really liked the love interest and how they juxtaposed Yetu's feeling. Their story was so interesting to me too. Totally agree with all your points - Rivers Solomon is an author I definitely need to read more of!

That's such a good point. For a short story, it is painstaking in the way it builds up and thoroughly explores so many different narratives. Such a great reading experience!

I read it today and am still mesmerized! It's a haunting story, with a rich atmosphere... It spoke to me, as you mentioned, through this dillemma of personal freedom and duty, but also, as someone suffering from high sensitivity and anxiety, I was able to connect the protagonist in a very deep sense... I'm so happy to have found this book! Your review was beautiful, thank you! 🌱

Enjoyed this video. I admire how succinctly you're able to explain the themes and what's going on in this story. I enjoyed this book. Solomon is a brilliant author. I loved the romance in this book and thought the ending was very bittersweet. I thought Solomon did a very good job at thinking scientifically about how mermaids would function.

Yes! I love how much detail went into considering this merfolk society and their history. For such a short book, it really accomplishes so much!

Completely agreed! I loved how Rivers Solomon explored so many themes in this slim little novella, especially those relating to generational trauma and history. They are so creative and thought-provoking in their work. I am so excited about their new book coming out next year, Sorrowland (which interestingly enough is going to be a gothic novel - I wonder if that's an upcoming theme given Silvia Moreno-Garcia's upcoming Mexican Gothic?).

If this is a new trend in publishing, I am ALL FOR IT. Bring all the well-written, POC-starring gothics unto me and I shall truly be LIVING. So much love for Rivers Solomon and all their work!

I read it in January and loved it! I was heart-broken for Yetu going through all that pain alone. It was short but packed a powerful punch.

Yes, exactly! You definitely feel for the pain and trauma Yetu experiences, and the reckoning she causes because of it is so powerful. I won't forget this story anytime soon, that's for sure.

Yes, such a good point! We learn and grow from our pain, and every experience shapes who we are. So it's so important to stay conscious of those things. One of many reasons why _The Deep_ is such a thoughtfully crafted story 💕

@@perpetualpages started and finished this yesterday... What a moving experience. It's kind of nuts how much emotion and nuance Solomon was able to pack into 150 pages. And (spoilers?) Yetu's relationship with Oori was everything I wanted it to be and ended in such a satisfying manner. I will for sure be checking out An Unkindness of Ghosts very soon ☺
