Jane’s Addiciton
On September 13, 2024, Jane's Addiction's concert in Boston ended abruptly and chaotically when frontman Perry Farrell physically attacked guitarist Dave Navarro on stage during the song "Ocean Size". Video footage shows Farrell, who appeared to be drunk or high, yelling at Navarro, shoulder-checking him, and then throwing a punch that connected with the guitarist's upper torso. People reported that farrell told Navarro "f--- you!"
The altercation started brewing earlier in the show, with Farrell shouting at Navarro during "Mountain Song" and the tension continuing through "Three Days" before boiling over. Crew members and bassist Eric Avery had to physically restrain Farrell and drag him off stage, with Avery throwing several punches at the singer in the process. Navarro, Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins then returned to the stage to say goodnight to the confused crowd, and the show ended early after only 11 songs.
Following the onstage incident, Avery, Perkins and Navarro returned to the stage to say goodbye to the crowd, making peace signs, waving and tapping their hearts, Variety reported.
On the Jane's Addiction subreddit and other forums, fans are discussing Farrell's erratic behavior and struggling vocals at recent shows leading up to the incident. Some point out that Farrell is 65 years old now and speculate this could be the band's last tour together.
Farrell's wife Etty claims on Instagram that he was frustrated by the instruments drowning out his vocals and that he has been dealing with tinnitus and a sore throat.
She went on to add “there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members”, which is “the magic that made the band so dynamic.”
“Well, the dynamite was lit,” she wrote. “Perry got up in Dave’s face and body checked him.” adding “When the audience in the first row, [they] started complaining up to Perry cussing at him that the band was planning too loud and that they couldn’t hear him, Perry lost it.” She added that it was bassist Eric Avery that “won the fight”. She alleged Avery “walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind [guitar technician] Dan [Cleary], put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times.” However, fan accounts to date have stated that Avery acted to restrain Perry. She claimed perry was pissed off for the next half hour and then broke down and cried after the incident. Various news outlets have reached out to the band for comment and it’s been radio silence. But some posters dispute her claims and suggested she’s been gaslighting the band. One source of contention was not having any onstage dancers .and earlier in the night farrell was supposedly throwing insults at Avery who seemed to laugh it off.
But most fans seem shocked by his physical outburst against his longtime bandmate. As of now, Jane's Addiction is still scheduled to continue their tour on September 15 in Connecticut. However, many are wondering if this violent onstage fight could mark the end of the band's reunion just a month into the tour. The fans on reddit seem to hink that perry is struggling with substance abuse and should head into rehab.
The tour which kicked off on Aug. 9 in Las Vegas and, for the first time since 2010, features their classic lineup of Farrell, Navarro, drummer Stephen Perkins and bassist Eric Avery.
Following the onstage incident, Avery, Perkins and Navarro returned to the stage to say goodbye to the crowd, making peace signs, waving and tapping their hearts, Variety reported.
The reviews of the shows up until this point seemed to largely praise the instrumental section of jane’s addiction but one review from a show in tampa a month ago stated Farrell launched into many nonsensical rants about cow pastures, mushrooms, surfing, living in Florida, and arguing with his brother about politics, among other undecipherable topics. Chugging from a full bottle of wine throughout the performance, one almost got the feeling that this wasn’t the first bottle he’d uncorked for the night.
At one point, during one of his ramblings, Navarro deliberately cranked out a loud, piercing chord on his guitar, as almost to silence Farrell and get the show back on track.
