My backyard orchard has produced it’s first persimmon harvest. It is growing in a container, but will soon be planted in the ground utilizing high density planting. Enjoy the video and grow your own food forest.

Lovely to see your Fuyu so fruitful. I planted mine in 2018. I don't know how old it was at the time, but am hoping it will fruit for the first time next year (2023). I'm in England, so I think our summers aren't always warm enough for good fruit production.

Greetings! The Fuyu is one of my favorite fruit trees. I planted 2 other varieties (Chocolate and Coffeecake persimmons) a couple of years ago. They did well for 1 season and then died. I don’t think they were suited for my growing zone. The Fuyu is a bit more hardy so I’ll likely replace the 2 that I lost with Fuyu varieties. Best of luck with yours and thank you for watching!

@@Zone10aBackyardOrchard must admit I have been looking for a Chocolate Persimmon for a while now, but at the moment it is extra hard to get interesting trees here in the UK because of Brexit. Maybe it's just as well if it wouldn't do well. I think I would like an American one if I could find one; they're wonderfully hardy.

@@Zone10aBackyardOrchard thank you. I really want to grow productive trees/berry bushes that would grow (relatively) easily here, but growing fruits we can't find in supermarkets is so tempting too, so at the moment my house is quite full of overwintering plants 😄

That’s exactly what I wound up doing. I don’t have a very big backyard, least not big enough to fit all the fruit trees I’d like to have, so I took out just about all non-fruiting shrubs/trees and replaced with varieties that bear fruit. I still have a little work to go, but most of the heavy lifting is done. Thanks for watching!

Wow. I was amazed to see your tree and it gives me hope because I’m about to buy a persimmon tree too. Mine is a baby and has know fruit. Mine will have to stay in the pot because I live in an apartment. Do you have any advice on how I should look after it? Thank you for an advice you give.

Greetings! Persimmons are highly susceptible to root rot. Be sure not to over water and make sure it has good draining soil. I had purchased a persimmon from a local nursery and the soil was not the best. As a result I lost my tree due to root rot. Since then I make sure to add a well draining soil mix when I transplant to a bigger container. Also, for a container I would recommend either a square wooden planter or a growbag in order to avoid circling roots. Best of luck and please let me know how your tree does. Thanks for watching!

This variety (Jiro Fuyu) does not require a pollinator. There are other varieties that do. Since posting this video I’ve purchased 2 other varieties that require a pollinator. If you have not already done so, please check out my video titled “Backyard fruit tree tour, March 2020 “. In that video you will find pollination information on the other 2 varieties I have (Chocolate and Coffeecake persimmons).

@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 ай бұрын
Persimmon trees are susceptible to root rot mainly cause by poor draining soil and or over watering. On a container grown tree I find its best to stick your finger in the soil (inch or two). If your finger is dry, then water. After doing this several time you will come up with a watering schedule that is best for your tree.

So far it has not been a problem. Last season the only issue I had was with a squirrel that attacked my avocados, grapes and a mango tree. This season, again so far, no squirrels. The only real issue so far has been with birds eating the fruit off my fig trees. I just recently placed a net around the trees and it seems to be working.

@@Zone10aBackyardOrchard How far are you from natural water sources? I've heard a huge contributor to birds pecking/eating fruit off plants is that they are thirsty and are trying to hydrate, not that they actually want the fruit as a food source. I have a creek behind my house that birds frequently use to bathe/drink from and I've had zero issues with pecking so far. You might consider researching bird baths as an aid in preventing damage too!

Can I grow Fuyu Persimmon in a hot and humid climate..??
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 3 жыл бұрын
The nursery where I purchased my Persimmon list the growing zones 8 thru 11 for in ground planting on the Fuyu. I don’t know what growing zone you are in, but generally speaking, most persimmon trees do best in subtropical to mild-temperate climates with moderate winters and mild summers. I would check with a local nursery and see if there is a variety that will work in your climate whether planted in ground or container grown. Hope this helps and thank you for watching.

They will definitely fruit if grown in a container. I was able to get a good harvest off mine when it was growing in one. I’m not familiar with the weather in your area. If you are planning to grow it in a container, and are able to provide an adequate growing environment, I would be sure to use a good draining soil mix. Persimmon trees are highly susceptible to root rot and need well draining soil and a large container to grow in.

@@Zone10aBackyardOrchard ahh, will you have any issues growing in a pot? are you able to stunt the growth with a pot and pruning?
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard
@Zone10aBackyardOrchard 4 жыл бұрын
Harley, This tree would have easily been able to grow in a pot with good draining soil. The growth would have been stunted somewhat with less fruit production than if grown in the ground. Please search my channel for a video titled “Persimmon, Mango, Grumichama, Pitomba and Ice Cream Bean High Density Tree Planting”. In that video you will see how I planted this tree in the ground. Also, note my comments on nursery potting soil and the possibility of root rot for this tree. I thought I had caught it early enough, but this tree did not make it (root rot).

That sounds about right. I purchased another Fuyu several months ago. It was in a 15 gal container estimated to be about 4 yrs old and it already had fruit on it. It didn’t have very many persimmons, but hopefully in another season or two it will put on a good amount of fruit. Thank you for watching!

In addition to the Fuyu, I also have a Chocolate and a Coffecake. From info I got from the nursery and online, the Chocolate and Coffecake make for good pollinizers for one another. My trees are still young, but hopefully I’ll get them to produce within a season or two. I’ll keep posting videos on a regular basis so you can follow along. Thanks for watching!
