What is persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn? Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn, or PPHN for short, is a condition in which the pulmonary arteries remain constricted after birth, resulting in increased pulmonary vascular resistance and right-to-left shunting of blood, ultimately leading to hypoxemia and acidosis.
