The character significance of maruki being a taxi driver is phenomenal. He went from changing people realities on where HE thinks they should go and now as a taxi driver he takes people to where THEY WANT to go themselves subtle briliant character writing

fun fact, he can still be a shoulder to rest on. something that also indirectly caused his palace's existence is that he as a counselor & therapist, grew too close to the phantom thieves, very specifically Joker. as a taxi driver, he'll still be able to hear people's stories from time-to-time, and give him his genuine advice. chances are that he'll never grow close to his clients, and will let them go as he helps them get to where they want to go, like you said.

What I enjoyed most about your playthrough was your engagement in the game. This really felt like JC’s Persona 5 Royal and not Persona 5 Royal. How much you analyzed the story, characters, and themes really made me understand this game on a deeper level and made me love it more. And the most significant part of that engagement is that (in no offense) he was very unoptimal in the game. In my playthrough, I already got the most busted Personas in the game, like Lucifer, Chi You, Beelzebub, and Izanagi-no-Okami Picaro by Shido’s palace. I maxed ranked every confidant before Christmas and steamrolled through most of the game. I got every character’s best weapons, including Makoto’s +22 to all stats gun. Persona is a game in which the more you put into it, the more powerful you get. I put a lot of time into getting that power and don’t regret playing like that. However, JC spent much more time analyzing the story and acting like he was in it. So many times, I was like, “Why do you still have medium wind magic on Angel,” “Why don’t itemize this Persona to get this busted item,” or “Why don’t you have auto all stats up” when I had those by Sae’s palace. However, this made me see more of the intent behind the boss fights. It made me so excited to see you tackle bosses like Okumura and Yaldaboath when, in my playthrough, I was so powerful I beat Yaldaboath by putting my controller down and pressing the auto-attack rush button. I got to feel so much more immersed in a world I saw as just another game in this series to get powerful in, while JC saw this as a brand new world he had no idea about. He brought so many new perspectives that I must thank JC for playing this game. I’m sure it made many people like me happy to see others loving our favorite games. I’m not a Twitch sub, I didn’t gift 160 subs or donate 262 dollars, but I hope my comments and viewership are enough to signal how thankful I am for your playthrough. (And PS, you would get a big kick out of Xenoblade Chronicles games. Those will rock your socks off)

Did he rob them of their desires though? Most people were still able to follow their dreams. Ryuji was still able to pursue his dreams of running track and he was being scouted by colleges, and Yusuke was able to continue doing art, this time with a mentor who actually treated him like a human being instead of exploiting him for ideas and taking advantage of him. In most cases their wants and desires are still there, it’s just that now they’re able to follow them more easily than before.

@@catalyst539 I think the point is that he was never going to achieve success in art. So instead of the PT set up the guy for failure in life and starvation. We also don’t know if the guy had interest in archery either, so he could’ve been someone who chose wrong in life and paid for it. Could’ve found happiness and achievement in archery but never did cuz he made one wrong choice in career. The game falls for the P4 problem of making the main characters right without considering the nuances of where they’re wrong.

I remember the first time I played the game, I was in an Airbnb. It was sweltering outside, and I was bored outta my mind. As I was exploring around the house, I discovered a PS3 and two games: a copy of Persona 5, and a copy of Yakuza 3. Instinctively, my hand gravitated towards Persona 5 as the game to play. I booted it up, and before I knew it, I had played the game for three days straight. When I left that Airbnb, I had just finished Futaba's palace and I was devastated to leave. I didn't own any PlayStation consoles at the time, and I wasn't really in a situation where I could justify buying one for a single game, and I eventually forgot about it entirely. It wasn't until I heard about Royal being released on PC that I remembered this game existed. As soon as the game released on Steam, I bought it (my first game ever purchased). I played it NONSTOP. When I finished this game, I was an emotional wreck for a week. It was totally worth it though. Since then, I've done NG+, and a third run of the game with Japanese voiceovers instead of English. (As a side note, my play time for all three runs of the game combined was just around 300 hours haha. You are really a yap master.) I'm so glad that chat (mostly) behaved well in your playthrough, JC. Watching you react to my favorite scenes is the closest I have gotten to reliving the experience of playing the game for the first time. Thank you man.

JC slowly joining the Akechi club was so fun to watch. Man went from intrigue to mild suspicion to distrust to eventual trust to liking him to hating him to feeling bad for him to being excited for him to come back to loving him and not wanting him to go. GORO AKECHI IS A ROLLERCOASTER. Speaking of Akechi, analysis time. I love Persona 5 Royal so MUCH. It's actually wild. The song playing during the end has lyrics that pretty much seem to be Joker missing Akechi after he disappeared. Or thinking about how he'll disappear if they continue with the mission. Very sad. Especially due to their complicated relationship. Anyway, there are a number of reasons why I think Maruki's claims about Akechi are unintentionally false and he's still alive. For starters, there's a cut scene in the game files that takes place with Akechi in rehab and he mentions having to go back to help someone he owes. Obviously, this isn't taking place in Royal time since he'd be with the group. The original vanilla timeline occurs. Which would suggest that he survived the vanilla game engine room soon as well but just escaped. I'm guessing this scene would've played with the other rank 10 confidants who tried to help Joker while he was in Juvie but was cut out so as to not spoil the surprise. The other confidants only get a scene where they help Joker when you get them to rank 10. And what's the only way to get the true ending where Akechi shows up? By getting him to rank 10. He ends up doing something to help Joker too and is presumably leaving. If you don't get him to rank 10, I think he flat out doesn't show up in the cutscene. So it's not like a hallucination. As for Maruki's claims, his hold on the world has been stated to be unstable so he hasn't gotten to knowing what everyone is thinking just yet. In fact, he hasn't even met Akechi. He only knew what Joker knew and wanted. Joker assumed Akechi didn't survive the engine room because of Futaba's claims, but he wanted a second chance with him. So Maruki assumed Akechi was dead and acted accordingly by giving him different memories. But if Akechi is just here because Joker wished for it and Maruki actualized it, why didn't he disappear immediately like Wakaba or Okumura once the actualization was broken and Joker knew the truth? Because the only thing Maruki did was pull Akechi away from wherever he was, he didn't bring him back to life to all. Joker's wish was for Akechi to have a second chance with him. For him to show up. And so by granting that wish, Akechi was yanked away and brought over to Joker. Once Maruki is taken down, Akechi goes back to where he was. Akechi and Joker live on. And whether soon or far away in the future, they'll have their rematch. But until then, Joker's holding on to his glove. Until they meet again.

Man, I've played through this game many times, cried each and every single time. I've watched several playthroughs and managed to get emotional every time the credits rolled, but never have I cried along with a streamer this way. I study psychology in both my free time as well as for my education. For my education we tend to look at the behavior of people of all age groups, and analyze their behavioral patterns to connect their actions and their personality traits to certain factors. (Basically, trying to determine what a person who acts a certain way would really think or feel about certain factors) Unironically, Maruki was a character that, 4 years ago, got me so heavily invested in wanting to become a psychologist/therapist. Not only do I like to psychoanalyse fictional characters (mainly those from the Persona franchise) but I also had my interest peaked in JC as a streamer, because of how entertaining he is and how entertaining his reactions to certain parts of the game are. Though many times it is obvious that some reactions to scenes are exaggerated for content sake (nothing wrong with that, it makes perfect sense) a certain few weren't, and those were the most interesting parts of his Lets Play. Faking genuine sadness is one of the hardest thing to do, and JC's tears were more than genuine. Seeing such an energetic person almost break character by letting go of all that raw emotion was priceless to see. Him crying to small conversations with Confidants and even NPC's showed how much he actually cared about the game, whether it was just the game and its world paired with its characters, or if it was the memories he made while playing it (Or both.) Seeing someone show this kind of genuine emotion really hit me in my feels because Persona simply means so much to me as a person. Seeing someone expirience EXACTLY what I felt the first time playing it and reacting accordingly was extremely heartwarming to me in a way. Seeing him cry near the end the way he did made it clear to me that everything he said about enjoying the game start to finish and becoming connected to the cast was genuine, and that is what made this playthrough of Persona 5 Royal the best playthrough I have ever watched. Not many can juggle being energetic, entertaining, funny, and genuine all at the same time. It's either the first three, or only the last one. So JC, as someone who discovered you through your Persona 5 Royal playthrough, I want to tell you just how unique of a streamer I think you are, and how much I appreciate you and your love and care for the games you play, along with still managing to be entertaining, inclusive and engaging. I think it's genuinely a talent, and I believe it says alot about you as a person. So thank you.

My favorite part about the fight with Maruki is not just that you're fighting any version of God. You've beaten the God of Control, but the step up from that isn't a greater God. No, Azathoth and Adam Kadmon are both his power, not the being itself. No, you are fighting _a messiah._

Though it is a spin-off, the Persona series tends to operate on a lot of the same rules as that of the Shin Megami Tensei series. In that series, the "messiah" is typically the player character- in-game, a character chosen by a higher will to change history- and on a meta level, chosen by the game developer to be the player's window into the world. Joker is "the" messiah in this sense- but Maruki is the one who literally takes the throne of the defeated demiurge. Were this a Megaten game, Maruki WOULD be a stand-in not for a messiah, but for YHVH.

I was watching this playthrough off and on over the year with my dog on both this channel and twitch and on fathers day weekend my dog passed. I caught myself a few times making comments about the last vods i watched to no one but myself. The end of Maruki's arch felt like myself going through it the first time. The whole scene with Maruki reaching to the sky before the ground shattering below him and the piano playing-- I felt that scene like I never had before this time. It all happened so quickly and now he's gone. He did go peacefully though. I just wanted to share that, though. If you happen to read this, I don't want you to feel bad for me or anything. JC You say you dont think Akechi is alive. I think he is, and my reasoning is the timeline was changed. Joker turns himself in on Cristmas Eve, the time you get the Kimono picture with Sumire/Kasumi is New Years. If Joker was behind bars how did he get a picture with her? You then see at the end where you thought it was Akechi. I believe this was, perhaps a gift from Maruki you may have beaten him but he still cares. OR Maruki has just made you think you beat him and tweaked cognition enough that you dont realise it. Bear in mind I havent played Strikers or Tactica which may have touched on this subject (Ive not looked into it because I dont wanna spoil them if I play in future) Edit: I think this comparison video of whether you max out Akechi confidant or not is rather telling kzbin.info/www/bejne/imXNe2xoa6mcrqs if you max it you see the guys walking past at the station, if you didnt max it you wouldnt see them.

Thanks for this awesome playthrough and for making me want to experience this amazing game again. It really felt like you made this playthrough your own. I'm so glad you got invested, weren't shy about taking the time to theory-craft and speculate, it made it so much more fun to watch and experience alongside you. I also love how at you always share your thoughts and opinions, even if sometimes i dont agree with them i like that you always share that, i will watch these "last arc" vods cause honestly i dont want to skip anything from this, after all, this arc is one of the best in the Persona series. I hope that if you play any other cool game you keep this attitude and i hope you play mire Persona games!

I found this stream in my recs since I have a sick habit of watching people react to the true ending of this game because I love emotional pain (for both them and myself). After watching this first half now I’m tempted to go and watch the entirety of them all instead of the shortened ones because I imagine they lack the little rant and analysis moments like you had during the talk with Maruki. Glad you really enjoyed the game, and always remember: Thank you Billy Kametz for the goft of your voice and talent. 😢

The thing with Maruki his way is pardoxical. Great intentions make everone happy, but thats impossible. One persons happiness could be another persons suffering, for example a Man could be abusive to his wife, she makes him happy, he loves her but he has a sadistic streak that means her abuse is his happiness. His happiness comes at the expense of hers, she cannot be happy unless his abuse stops. So they cannot both be happy in this scenario. 5:16:16 Unless of course that woman is Makoto apparently Likewise 2 people are striving for the same job, only 1 can get it. Both cant be made happy. Or 1 persons happiness would be to win the gold, but only 1 person can. Or it could be Sumire and Makoto both would be happy to marry Joker. But he can only commit to one. So someone must remain sad. So many ways his world cannot function without him imposing his will upon everyone, so that would make him a tyrant and go against everything he is trying to do. Maruki is the equivelant of giving everyone a participation award and there being no winners or losers.
@qwertyasdf6589
@qwertyasdf6589 Ай бұрын
counterpoint: the man’s tendency for abuse probably stems from some sort of traumatic event or insecurity in his early life. in maruki’s world, the man would have had a better life so he would never become an abuser. people aren’t naturally evil or abusive, if they’re put on the right track they would be normal and happier, which is what marukis goal is
@qwertyasdf6589
@qwertyasdf6589 Ай бұрын
people wanting a good job or “winning gold” and feeling worthless if they don’t is just a symptom of our hyper materialist society that places the value of money over people. who knows, if maruki won society could have possibly been changed on a fundamental level
