There is only a True Ending, because that was the option Joker would and did pick. That is my opinion, anyway.

Those who live in the Velvet Room talk a lot about Fate a lot, but they also talk about Potential. I think that "Fate" for each character refers to the strict endings of "Win" and "Lose" at the ends of the paths the characters have already been lured into and trapped upon, and "Potential" is something they can only reach by getting the "Win" end specifically and obtaining their freedom to finally make choices outside of the trap they were forced into.

You can still get reversed social links in P3R but it's harder for that to happen (unless you romance multiple partners) and you can just rewind to fix them. Not to mention they carried less weight gameplay-wise in all versions of P3 as they only gave the extra exp, the key items that unlock ability to fuse ultimate personas of each arcana that the protagonist can use (something this video fails to mention) and the items you'd occasionally receive from some of them like the ones Bunkichi would force upon your character in the Heirophant social link. Also party members have arcana but no social links, their personas instead evolve during the main story. It wasn't until Persona 4 that social links became a particularly important gameplay mechanic.

10:52 is false. It's even possible for a monogamous Joker to be attacked by his love interest on valentine's day (happened to me in my most recent playthrough) The game only has three variables for each girl on Valentine's day; Not romanced, ignored, and main romance. Your main romance is the one you choose to hang out with on valentine's day, and ignored is everyone else that you romanced. The scene does not trigger based on if you romanced everyone, it triggers if even one girl is considered ignored by the game. On Valentine's day, you're given the option to hang out with no one even if you have a date. This allows even a monogamous Joker to trigger the scene.

I don't remember what other confidants I finished, and didn't finish, but one thing stood out. I had a choice between Hifumi & Makoto. I chose Makoto, because I believe not only she fit the most for Joker, but for me. I would not LIE, I'd move in with her and do all the cooking & cleaning while she's at work, since she wanted to pursue I think it was being police / an official of some sort. Unfortunately, I had to go back very much because I learned that not finishing Akechi & Kasumi's social links led to a bad ending. Those were the only social links I used a cheat sheet for.. and maybe also Takemi's & Iwai's.. for the shop benefits. But otherwise, it meant I had to not focus on other social links.. so as bad as I felt, I ditched Haru's social link ENTIRELY. In the end, I did realize that it didn't matter that I spent time with Makoto or not.. and did exactly that. I didn't spend extra time with her, except on holidays. But it felt bad. It felt like something was missing, for sure.

So I thought about this during my playthrough of P5R. Does anyone else think that Joker should have gotten a Showtime Attack for whoever he got into a relationship with? The idea would basically be that all female party members would have a Showtime with Joker, Whoever Joker maxed out and romanced would unlock that Showtime. Thing is that it would only happen with the first girl you max out and confess to so as to be fair for people who only date one girl vs people who date multiples. This would replace the one he gets with Sumire since she's romansicable and if you wanted it you just romance Sumire, we could also have it stay as how you unlock it already as a last resort in case you decide to not date anyone.

Y'know, there is a subtle tragedy to Joker when relationships are framed in this way. To fight against a world built on abusing others' trust, he is required to build bonds... only to abandon them. To use other people in the same way he codemns others for doing so. And I'd like to imagine he's self aware of this if you don't go for the hidden power trip ending. Joker may have earned his own emancipation, if not the entire world's, but at the cost of his happiness and dignity. The cost of being a hero was not being allowed the privledge of a mundane life of going up onto a ferris wheel and giving his girlfriend a small necklace. Or, worse yet, if Joker dated someone that isn't a member of the phantom thieves, then he would eventually have to ghost the person he loves for the sake of the world. Sure, he'd still regularly see Takemi and Kawakami, but the former would amount to sweet nothings being used as currency for illicit and expermental drugs, while the latter would be a secret love where the two can't see each other as equals due to the nature of "Becky's" two different jobs. But everyone else? Its like he vanished into the wind. While I realize that this isn't Undertale and the act of reloading an old save isn't that deep, I do wonder about the implications of doing so. If Joker ever lies during the interrogation to make it sound like he was closer to his partner than he actually is. Did he and Makoto _really_ cuddle on that couch that day? Or did he just tell Sae that to make it sound like he was a proper, loving boyfriend? Gives me ideas for stories I want to write.

The new romance skills would also need to be good, so that it would warrant going the extra mile for whichever character you’d choose. That wouldn’t solve all the problems, ie dating multiple characters and facing no repercussions, but it solves one primary issue. If the series continued with the traditional social link route, without confidant abilities, than maybe you’d just unlock another persons fusion for maxing out a romance.

another great video, the editing was on point again! i played P5R 3 times by now, the first time i played it i didn't care for maxing out every social rank and kept spending time with Takemi even way beyond rank 10, just because i liked her character and her story, it felt right to me as a player even without getting rewarded for it on my 2nd and 3rd play-through i min-maxed the relationships and my stat growths to an extreme where i ended up with weeks of nothing to do to further improve my character in a meaningful way, and instead of spending time with my romance option i went to the batting cages, jazz club, you name it - there was no point in further spending time with my "friends" in-game, no meaning full extra dialogue or anything.

That is a why I can't being myself to play a persona game. It feels like you are robot with a limited lifespan going though a check-list than a actual person.

I'm only about a 3rd of my way into the video, and well- I've never watched someone explain the intertwining of both aspects of the game in such an easily digestible way. For someone who has never played a Persona game before, I'm definitely going to try to explain these systems to them using the words and visuals from your video. I've always found that the Persona series, and 5 Royal in particular due to the greater amount of mechanics compared to earlier entries, a very difficult series to describe to someone from a mechanics standpoint. I can at length discuss what makes the characters, story, and writing very emotionally satisfying, but when I'm introducing the gameplay to people I find I sometimes accidentally make the games sound way more convoluted and unappealing doing so. I think you have a talent for breaking down game mechanics, even though this is the only 6 minutes of your content I have watched, just because you've done this so beautifully. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for checking out the video! I know a couple people that haven't played any of the Personas because of how long they are and how much they have going on, so I get that it can be intimidating to people. I remember feeling kind of overwhelmed when P5 "turns you loose." But after getting over that initial hump, everything clicked and I couldn't put it down. If this video in some way helps some people get into this game/series/universe, then mission accomplished! Thank you for your kind words!

I love how you approach the topic with real care, understanding of the game, and reason. I always found it a bit strange how many people get hyperfixated on a mechanic, as you perfectly say, doesn't matter. It's really only there for pure satisfaction. From a gameplay and story POV. I get why there isn't this convulted system from the romance. It's because the whole jealousy system was already in Persona 3. And wanting to see evey Social Link. Would ultimately force you to do eveything by a specific guide. Which limits your freedom. Along with Platonic routes not being an option. Having a similar system in 5, would be the most ironic thing there could be.

Dude, this channel is criminally underrated. The amount of effort and quality is so good! You do make a lot of good points. It's a shame that you no longer need to spend time with people once you max them out. The game really doesn't give you any incentive and even punishes you by wasting the day you spend with them when you could've done something else. By the end of the day though, this game is overall fantastic. Maybe the little things we do and the decisions we make matters as long as it matters to us

I just finished my time with Persona 3 Reload (phenomenal game btw) and I just realized something: that game has the _perfect_ opportunity to tie a bit of mechanical depth to this part of the game in the form of the characters' passives. Each party member has a passive trait that can be unlocked and enhanced by spending time with them at night (e.g. Aigis will get a 10%, then 20% buff to all physical traits). You could very easily just add another slight buff to 30% if the protagonist dates one of his party members, or maybe a small boost to the protagonist himself if he goes out with someone outside of the party. An easy addition that gives a bit of extra depth to a currently superfluous decision, but not enough to prioritize the boost over choosing the character you actually like the most. That might encourage the player to go out with as many people as possible to get all the extra stuff, but that element of the game is its own can of worms... ...which I'm going to open right now. During my second playthrough of Persona 5 Royal, I initially paired "Joker P Thief!" up with Makoto, but much later in the game, I was really struck by Kasumi's character arc and social link, so I made him start dating her as well. This led to Joker getting struck by Makoto in a more direct way, and I couldn't help but think that the whole situation could have been avoided if Joker was able to just cut it off with Makoto and tell her that he found a different partner. This would clash with that idea with the passives I had earlier, but I'm just throwing out whatever ideas I can come up with here. The whole romance element of Persona has always stuck out to me as a bit weird. On one hand, I appreciate the small bit of player expression it adds to otherwise linear games and I understand that the developers have more important things to spend their time fleshing out, but on the other, it's strange just how little it matters in a series of otherwise very deliberately designed games. In the final few days of Reload, I wanted to spend more time with Aigis even after maxing out her social link, but didn't have the option because of how strict that game is with its time; and even after going back to do just that, there was no extra scene for me to view, which is even more of a shame because the game lacks a Valentine’s Day cutscene due to plot circumstances. This wasn't a problem with Kasumi in Royal, but again, I viewed all those cutscenes with a twinge of guilt since Joker was unwillingly using her to cheat on another girl. Again, I get why the romance mechanics aren't that deep, but this is, for better or worse, a part of the game that a large number of people know it for. A few easy tweaks (and maybe a couple more cute little cutscenes) would go a long way in making these games just a tiny bit more fun. As an addendum, I totally wish some more throwaway lines were added post-romance. Like, imagine Junpei finding out the protagonist started dating Aigis and getting his mind blown. I'd kill to see that. Of course, this would cause some problems if you date multiple- oh, screw it, just get rid of that, it causes too many problems with any major change to the smooching mechanics in this game, and you shouldn't be allowed to do that anyway. Throw the whole thing away! I gotta get up early tomorrow, so I’ll cut my comment off here. Super nice video, by the way. Slick editing, and some interesting ideas that I hadn't thought about too much on my own. Keep it up, baby!

They could impmement a "Reverse arcana" system, like they did in P3. When you spend too little time with a social link, or your answers on the prompts are incorrect too many times, the confidant will lock up. You'd need to go to the shrine to pray and go through a reconciliation scene with them, hence, wasting two time slots in restarting the confidant.

Tbh I'm perfectly fine with the romance aspects having no impact on the gameplay, and instead just being an extra bit of cute fun you can have. I really liked that in P3 and P4 the social links didnt impact the gameplay at all outside of the occasional party member move and rank 10 second persona awakening, and the fusion XP bonus and end rank persona unlock. In P5 there's always this thing in the back of my head telling me to focus on social links that benefit me in palaces and battle instead of who I want to hang out with most. I never had that worry in P4 and P3(outside of making sure I don't continue one of the datable girls social link to where they get jealous of other girls). I felt much more free to be the Yu Narukami or Makoto Yuki I wanted to be, compared to the Joker I'm currently playing as. Despite liking Takemi's and Mishima's as characters it still felt like an obligation to do their links due to how much they improve the game with their buffs, so they were two first social links I finished. In Persona 4, I decided that I wanted to that I wanted to finish Nanako and Dojima's social links were the ones I wanted to finish first and second because I liked their stories so much. In Persona 3FES, I did the Book Store owners and Kuzushi's social links first and second because I wanted to, and when it came to FES I didnt even know there was a Persona unlocked to fuse when you finished a social link. I really think the social links all having some sort of gameplay has hindered the game in letting you as the player experiencing what you wish to experience in the year or so you have in the game. I'm not gonna be able to finish Kawakami's or Sojiro's, Ichiko's or Futaba's social links because of how the links now impact the gameplay in such a meaningful way. You decided to finish up Takemi's social link instead of going on a date with the girl you decided to date because of the impact doing another's social link would have on gameplay. (Does Chihaya's ability to get you to the rank up point of a social link that isnt there yet not exist in P5R?) Where as in P4, I would sometimes decide to just hangout with the girl I dated just for fun and my reward was simply cute dialogue that would change as the story progressed. Personally I don't like that the answer to wanting going in dates is making it impact the gameplay. Now I wanna make it clear that I do still LOVE Persona 5 so far, but I do miss how simple and genuine making these connections felt in P3 and 4. It feels nice to do something that doesn't matter to the game, but matters to me.

While I understand why it doesn't work that way, I really think that there should be ways in which being in a relationship influences the rest of the party. Shouldn't it be obvious to people whom you see on a day to day basis that there's something going on with their leader and one of them? Imagine Morgana sulking around, knowing you and Ann are dating! Even if Joker never dates anyone from the party, if you fight to the death alongside someone, you'll most definitely know when that person is... happier. That's one of the reasons I want a Persona game with a College/University student. That way, more adult themes can be handled properly. Like drinking, for example. Just look at Stray Sheep! It would be awesome to have that in a Persona game! Even more "mature" things could be more overtly discussed or even mentioned, if in a romantic relationship, if all characters were adults, not highschoolers.

I know I'm many months late, but this has to be the best motion design for a gaming video I've seen since XboxAhoy. I see some custom assets you made yourself in Illustrator like the pedestals, but blended in perfectly with the art direction of the game. I have no idea how you managed to have so much custom flavour animation for elements springing into place. But overall your ideas for visually presenting your script are just extraordinary. The diagram of how all the different game mechanics coalesced, and especially depicting the rainbow flag with multiple layers of joker are especially stand-out to me. Not even mentioning the painted minimalist sections. Just superb work

I think it'd be neat if being romantically involved with someone unlocked extra confidant levels, maybe ones that boost the likelihood of recovery and such. I feel like this would potentially add some repercussions to cheating too, since any social links over rank 10 would be reverted back to being as such and that characters arcana would become inverted like in P4
@TheBlackSeraph5 ай бұрын
Persona 3 forced you to enter romantic relationships to get to Rank 10 with any of the female social links, meaning that the only way to max out every social link was to date every girl behind the others' backs. Given that social links in P3/P3FES also give access to new AI scripts and that in P3P picking the FemProtag meant that you had to romance Ken Amada who is TWELVE, tying mechanical benefits to acting like a heel was not well received and removed from Persona 4 and Persona 5.
