I took a slightly different approach. I bought a military surplus medic's pouch with 3 compartments. The largest holds a steel cup, 500ml kleen kanteen, diamond sharpening pen and a very simple first aid kit. One small compartment holds an altoid tin with tinder and a bic inside; a lanyard with firesteel, SAK, whistle and compass; and a headtorch which sits at the top. The other small compartment has a bandana, 50ft of paracord, gorilla tape and a simple sewing kit. The pouch has a belt loop and is possible to carry on a belt with 500ml of water but far more comfortable with the bottle removed. The idea with the lanyard is that you can hang it on your neck and have a firesteel, SAK, whistle and compass ready to hand while also reducing the risk of dropping and losing them. This kit lives in my vehicle and something from it gets used every week. Everything in it has been used at some point!

My take on these kits is to solve two problems: (1) survive until you are found; (2) get found as quickly as possible. 1) Rule of 3's: 3 hours of exposure. That's the big one. Stay warm, stay cool. A decent space blanket works both ways. Also, be able to make fire. Next is water. You need to bring water with you. I've been in a number of search and rescue scenarios and where people got themselves in trouble is where there isn't any water available. 2) Again, fire. Make lots of smoke. Also, chem light, or flare. Whistle. Mirror.

As a diabetic now I keep changing up my PSK. I try to keep a bit of sugar in mine, even just a small bit to keep my bloodsugar in a normal range. Totally loving the other items. You could even use a plastic freezer ziplock bag for a more frugal alternative.

Great setups gentlemen. I would consider an anti diarrhea medicine to add to the kit. If, for some reason, your water treatment methods fail it could be a life saver

Starts at 6:30. You can thank me later. Go with a $50 instead. You might need a little bit more to get you out of trouble. Better safe than sorry. Don't use the Trioxane. It goes bad fast and it crumbles into nothing pretty fast. I never tried burning it after it turned to dust, but I understand it's not good even when it's solid.

I love survival kit videos! My AO is Montana and Idaho which requires different stuff than FL. Even in the hottest months of the summer here when it's 85 F in the day it can still get down near freezing at night at elevation (where I do all my camping, hiking and bushwhacking). A couple months ago I had to spend an unplanned night out in the mountains of northern Idaho with a pretty robust PSK and found even that large kit to be a bit lacking in warmth elements. I did have a robust fire kit and space blankets to make a reflective shelter and I was comfortable...but only while I kept the fire stoked. This required frequent trips to collect wood as I foolishly was wearing only jeans a T-shirt! Long story, but the point is that things don't go as planned. My PSK was about 12 lbs including two x 1 L Nalgenes but I'd have traded half my "survival gear" for a fleece jacket! With that I'd have been pretty comfortable even if the fire dipped pretty low. While I love these kinds of videos I'm not sold on really small kits. True, if you're using them in concert with proper clothing and some regular hiking or camping gear you're probably fine. But where I live you're probably better off at least going with a water bottle bag type kit (eg Maxpedition 12x5 with a couple small pouches attached). It's hard to beat a real water bottle- the small bags are better than nothing but nowhere near as good as a SS Nalgene or Kleen Kanteen. I know, I know...better the small kit on you than the big kit at base camp. Fair point. But better still a 10 lb kit you always have along that has useful, high quality gear. A few things I know make sure to have on me at all times in the woods: 1) At least one water bottle. SS or plastic, I'm not that picky. I have a filter and/or Aquatabs. 2) Decent knife & a good folding saw (I favor Silky but keep a Corona in my kit, nearly as good and more 'disposable') 3) A robust fire kit. 4) Cordage & T-Rex tape. 5) At least two space blankets and a sil-nylon tarp. The blankets can tear, and it's nice to have one for cover and one to lay on. 6) Headlamp, flashlight and spare batteries for both! 7) Lightweight gloves and a toque/beanie. 8) Poncho- the disposable at least, a decent one if I have room. 9) Small foam sit pad (that actually fits in my small pack). 10) Warming layer- this one isn't 100% settled yet. I recently picked up a Swagman Roll by Helikon-Tex. If my testing goes well it will ride in my dayhiker/PSK bag. Otherwise a fleece blanket, jacket, or small sleeping bag. Again, where I live it can hit freezing at night even in August. 11) Lastly I keep the "normal PSK stuff" that everyone has (eg a few meds, spare glasses, compass, mirror, Fresnel lens, etc). Great channel! I like your base kits but personally don't like to hit the "Big Woods" out here without more gear.

The alt pods tin aspect would be a great kit to keep in a regular or back pocket (if you don’t wear cargo pants - i.e. someone who may have a specific dress code for work but still wants to have a kit of some kind on them). I’d agree they aren’t ideal but the best kit is the one you have on you

Like your kits guys. Two more things you might want to include in your kits are: Benadryl tablets & packets of Manuka honey (good to apply to superficial wounds, as a cough suppressant, or as a ‘shot’ of energy)

very nice kits, i have 3 different myself. A mini Altoid tin that i always carry in my pocket. A normal Altoid tin thats in my truck and a SAS survival kit that is in my backpack. All includes cutting tools a flashlight, water purification, fishing, only the size changes. In my SAS survivalkit i also carry some food and a small cookingpot. I also carry some kind of knife and a small multitool on my keychain and a Victorinox and a BIC lighter and a flashlight on me all times. The flashlight i can put on the bill of my cap and improvise a headlight.

When I heard you both have fishing kits, I immediately thought of being stuck in one place for a long time trying to catch a fish. And having to be right on the shore or even in the water, given the size of your stuff, where mishaps can happen. And you have to cook it. All of which means hassle and risk. And you probably won't catch anything anyway for all the energy and time wasted. In an emergency, a fishing kit addresses a need, food, that you can easily do without for a day or two. Put a sachet of honey and a piece of jerky in there, and that's as good as eating a small fish.

Well I just finished my first Altoids tin kit and of course whilst it useful it's just not big enough so I'm going to have to upsize. But the main benefit I see is that it made me do a lot of thinking about what I need to survive. And I think that's the primary benefit. At the moment though I will make do with the Altoids tin plus a space blanket in a Ziploc bag cause well I have two pockets.

I assume he'll get zipped up in a body bag. Besides, if you do fly with this stuff, you have to check it in your luggage, and in a crash, all that stuff is going to scatter beyond 10 miles. Maybe you're saying, remove the fishing gear and the knife and carry it in your pocket. So, ok, you're flying in a commercial airliner (because we're talking TSA is our restricter, so this scenario has to be commercial), jet requires 200 knots to begin to create lift. Only survivable crash is at take off because anything else would be too high and/or too fast to be able to survive. So a crosswind catches the jet during take off, the jet spins a couple of times breaching the fuselage. Now you're on a runway at a major airport and E.S. are on their way anyway. But MAYBE you somehow survived a remote location crash from 30,000ft. Let's just say you had your tray table up and your seat back in the full upright position (thanks Weird Al) and you somehow survived this crash. THEN you will have your emergency kit sans the knife and fishing gear. So then YES, that would be better than nothing and YES he will have been glad he didn't FEDEX his stuff. Then he will die.
@robbabcock_
@robbabcock_ 5 жыл бұрын
@@texw4062 Depends on where you're flying and what you're on. Brush planes/float planes used in Canada, Alaska and the western states fly low and slow. It's very common to survive the initial crash. Sure, a jumbo is gonna be bad but a surprising amount of people survive them crashing (75% of crashes are on takeoff or landing).

The survival blanket is it big a nuff? There is a video by flight chops it about survival after a force down or flight denied. One man and is friends almost die and the emergency blanket ripped on them in Canada it a good video I think it’s in two or three parts. And survival kits should be on your body you could do a video on what you would take as a force down pilot and a pilot down survival vest because sometimes the aircraft can go up in flames or down to the bottom of a lake. What it your take? Maybe a series of videos on type of areas and maybe a TSA approved as well? Just remember it would be you do have it if it’s not on your body. And you maybe hurt or not.

I have made plenty of edc survival kits but the the problem is keeping everything small. I carry a small edc survival kit and I know what’s in it. I also have a travel one that I can fly with and a heavy duty container for edc in a shtf scenario. With those three kits I’m in good shape for any emergency situation. Knowing what’s in them is important no matter if u make it or not. I recommend BSS survival kits if u are looking for simple survival kits. Most people put unnecessary items when they make there own. Just keep it simple and easy to use.
